Security at the Entrance

Figment632: There is at least one factual misstatement in your post, but as I said, this isn't the place to discuss it. Feel free to PM me if you like.

We just returned yesterday from the World. On our first day in MK, we noticed a security officer and a leashed dog going up one side of Main Street and down the other. The dog had on a vest that said, do not pet. It might of said, Working Dog...not sure if those were the exact words. But the dog was sniffing in and out of all the doorways, windows etc up and down the street. This was about l0:00am. It seemed very obvious they were checking things out.

I also noticed in Epcot, the Security used mini flash lights to look in purses and packs. My question - do they search strollers? They seem to slip on in and I just wondered, because so many got bags and whatnot stored in the baskets of them.

Six Flags has NEVER allowed outside food and beverage inside the parks (they generally make exceptions with bottled water and juice boxes). If Disney weren't geared towards small children, I assure you Disney would have this same policy. Movie theaters also don't allow outside food and beverages.

Wow, that seems pretty strict. I've never had a problem taking food into any UK themepark (or most other American ones actually). Same goes for movie theatres.

Looks like this is greed on a national level. I appreciate glass bottles / jars could be a problem, as alcohol wood be too but a couple of sandwiches and a bottle of coke? Has anyone ever had a good explanation for this other than "to make more money"?

A quick note to all themeparks: if you want me to eat your food, charge reasonable prices or at least make it taste good! Disney World, to its credit, have enough food choices to please anyone but that is a rarity, even in other Disney parks around the world.

I am not sure what the intent is for the bag check at each park gate. Perhaps this is how they deter you from bringing really big bombs into the parks. I suspect the bag check has more to do with creating a que before you hit the front gate so observers can profile individuals. That extra time for trained individuals may prove useful. As someone pointed out earlier in the thread you don't normally see or hear of gang related issues inside the parks. I know for a fact there is an observer, presumably park security, stationed at every park entrance near the bag check line. They are not obtrusive, but as a 1st line of defense I suspect quite effective in filtering elements management would like to keep out of the parks. I have been led to believe these 2 items are the tip of the sword so to speak. You can bet your bottom dollar there is lots more going on inside the parks than the ubiquitous security guard, or even the plain clothes loss prevention crowd roaming the stores.

I am always looking around for things that don't look right, but I think Disney has done a great job of mitigating what could turn out to be very bad situations without having to MRI everybody as the step on property. Do I feel safe, rarely. Am I less nervous at the parks than elsewhere, yep.

I believe the PI movie theater does.

Yes, AMC Theaters do allow food and drink to be brought into theaters, as long as it's non alcoholic and not in a glass container.

So what about underwear bombs? Unless you store your underwear in the bags that get searched, what good is it doing.

And what if some flew a plane into the parks? Or hijacked a bus and drove it into the front of the park and blew it up?

Honestly people, you have to realize if someone wants to do something badly enough, they'll do it. No matter how strict/comprehensive a check there is. Don't worry about it and enjoy your vacation.

They couldn't get the bus inside MK or EC at all I would think?

Then they'd find a way in backstage.

Seriously, like I said, security does everything and anything to keep you safe, but no matter how hard they(or anyone anywhere) try there can always be one nutjob that will get through.

But Disney is safe, and is doing their best to keep you safe. Stop worrying.

I'd rather Security have a presence than none at all.

There are alot more undercover officers then you think to...

Just look for the guy who looks out of place, facing the wrong way at the turnstiles, wearing clothing that doesn't match the climat. He will also have a very obvious earpiece. There is always at least one at each entrance. Usually they are leaning on a pole or talking to the Orange County Sherrif - ya know, trying to blend in :veryconfu...

There are quite a few of them too - we have a few intoxicated guests strip off and jump in the waterfall in Canada one time. Within a min of calling security there were 3 plain clothes and 1 uniformed officer there.

If you mean undercover then, yeah - agree with that,

if you mean the front entrance then they are a waste of time that causes another queue that is not needed
it might only be a few minutes but for what they do they may s well not be there

A few people have made comparissons with airline attacks of recent times - imagine if the airport security had the same kind of checks.....

If the parks think they are under such a threat then treat the threat properly and do proper checks - or scrap them all together!

The secondary benefit is the reduced amount of crap being brought into the parks. We've, now that our daughter is over 3, essentially eliminated bringing any bags into the park. We'd be more likely to do it if it weren't for the back checks - especially at peak times. At times it'd be nice to have some items for our daughter but we forego them to avoid the bag.

In Pittsburgh, more specifically West Mifflin, PA...is a popular theme park called Kennywood (popular to us Pittsburghians that is!)

The area around it is not what you would call the best. There have been more than one shooting in the park, though not common - it does happen.
But it's a very kid friendly park and very fun to go to.

Kennywood has metal detectors to ensure safety.

While we like to believe that Disney does not attract any criminals...I'm sure they are there. So yes, it's a good thing to have someone checking to make sure someone didn't "accidentally" forget their fun in their purse or something.

that's an understatement. and a lady "did forget her gun in her purse" last year I believe.

Security does just what they are supposed to do. They check bags and what not. If your determined to get something past them you can, I do it every time I walk into DLR. Not for any evil reason but because I carry a pocket knife everywhere I go.

And in regards to the suicide vest statement. The vest are bulky not because of the C4, TNT, PETN or whatever they make or steal. They are bulky because they loaded with all sorts of shrapnel producing fun.

My question to all of you is this. Do you know how to spot someone ready to cause trouble? It's WAY more than just wearing bulky clothing and such.
