I seriously also doubt that the person sitting next to the OP is currently thinking "Goshdarnit, that one time a few months ago I was at the Magic Kingdom and this guy took ONE FLASH PICTURE on the Haunted Mansion! I am just sooooo angry and upset about still!!"

To me there's a difference between someone wanting 1 photo of a specific thing, and one of those guests who has the flash going almost like a strobe through the entire ride. The first thing doesn't annoy me at all, the second one makes me want to strangle someone.

Of course you're right, there is a big difference. And I frankly feel the same way as you. But that's because I'm an AP holder, I live here, and I go all the time. But I also know for a fact that I'd feel very different - and rightly so - if this was my once every five years family trip to WDW.

BTW, there is no written "Right to a flash-free ride". By using flash on a ride, you are being inconsiderate, but you are not infringing on any rights.

I'm afraid I have to disagree here. If it is a rule that flash photography is not permitted on a particular ride, as it is on HM, then that means, by definition, that all the other guests do in fact have a right to a "flash free ride", every single time. It is inconsiderate as you say, but it is most certainly a rule violation as well.

And as a guest...

I find the flash photos to be quite rude and obtrusive....but also a necessary evil. How else would we get the really good photos from inside rides like Mansion?:drevil:

By knowing how to use your camera and all the settings it has :) ... just do a search on Flickr for the group Disney Dark Rides, a ton of incredible photos where people have not used a flash, and have some spectacular shots of the ride interiors as they appear to the naked eye.

A camera like the Canon 5D MkII with a lens that has an apeture of 1.4 does the trick quite well. :D

Here is a link to one of them, I wish it was one of my shots.

Well, there is no written rule that I can't specifically climb to the top of the castle but it's expected that I do not. When people come to Disney they expect perfection. That was one of Walt's big mottos: Get the show perfect for the guest and don't put it on if it isn't ready. It's why Walt never saw Pirates...it wasn't perfect to the smallest detail just yet before he died, it could have been opened but it wasn't 100%. Guests do not expect to have flashes going off in constantly ruining the show, it makes it less than 100%. And it does ruin the show...it blinds you, you can't see, and instead of being immersed in the attraction you have the thought in the back of your head of "when will I get flashed again?" People that do you flashes are infringing on my rights to a good show just exactly the same as if I yelled at the top of my lungs throughout the whole show.

Just pointing out for clarity:
As much as I adore, collect and crave "unauthorized" photos, I have never taken a flash photo on a ride when other guests are present.
The few I have taken have been with the ....um...assistance of friendly CMs.
Nobody's ride ruined by me, I gaurantee it.
Unless you can never ride Mansion again after that photo of the bat mechanism....:animwink:

Safe in my archives. Actually, most of the photos I have are very similar to ones found floating around the net. That stuff isn't hard to find.
Are these archives in a physical body of some sort? If so, I would kindly request their presence at the next luncheon meeting of the South Florida Disney Society of Doom and Gloomers.

Here is that painting and some co-workers hanging around the scenic shop while on break...
Once again, awesome.

Laura's point was that taking one picture during HM is not the same as taking flash pictures constantly throughout the show. She said she would be as annoyed as you or I by that kind of behavior. I can't really tell from your post where you stand. I know you don't approve of flashes going off constantly - I think we're unanimous on that.

Laura went a step farther by saying that taking one picture, while inconsiderate, is not necessarily wrong, based apparently on the fact that it wouldn't bother her personally.

The bottom line, really, is that it doesn't matter whether it would bother her (or you or me for that matter). It clearly bothers some people, Disney does have a rule against it (may even be a written rule, I haven't picked up a guide map in a while), and it does causes other guests to have an experience other than the one for which they've paid. And that, IMHO, is enough to make it wrong.

I have to agree that people taking flash photos on dark rides is rude. I do think a lot of them dont understand english or they are very selfish.

Well, to me the real bottom line is that many people reading this thread learned about a cool painting in the Haunted Mansion that they might not have otherwise known about or might have erroneously believed removed and gone forever.

In addition, they were able to see the painting clearly due to photos taken, photos that might not have been otherwise available if all rules were followed.

At the end of the day, some people reading this thread might have their next visit to the Magic Kingdom enhanced due to this knowledge, even if while searching for the painting, they endure a momentary annoying camera flash.

And if that happens for even one person, the inconvenience was worth it.

There's a difference between 'rights' and 'rules'. I'm just being picky about semantics (I'm being a pain). There is a RULE against flash photography. It is not a "right" (legal entitlement) to go on a ride without someone's flash in your face (unfortunately). An inconvenience, an annoyance, but not violation of a RIGHT. If it was, we could all sue someone anytime they take a flash picture on a ride.

Eh...no, I never actually said that. I said it didn't annoy me personally, but I never stated if it was right or wrong. A single momentary flash during an entire 10 minute ride (while it may be against the rules) is such a negligible annoyance it's easily forgivable and overlooked.

On the other hand, the person in the boat in front of me on Pirates last week who took a flash picture of every single scene had a blatant disregard and lack of respect for the rest of the people trying to enjoy the attraction...to the point that I'm still annoyed by it all these days later.

I agree. It's something I'd certainly look out for next time. :) A lot of the "magic" inside the Disney parks has been enhanced for me personally due to people breaking a rule a single time to point out some otherwise hidden treasures.

I noticed the picture about a year or so ago. I think it's there just to fill in the gap between the ballroom and the attic a little.

My feelings on flash photos is; if you've stuck/stopped on SpaceShip Earth in the Matrix Tunnel (blue lights in a grid) for 10 minutes, then it's alright to take a flash picture (the ride has already been ruined). The rest of the way down, I'll take some pics of the "triangles", since the ride has already been ruined and everyone else is looking at their video screens .

And my policy is this: In most cases, flash pictures are an act to be condemned, but if it involves the finding of obscure attraction details for the benefit of WDWMagic members, then please do by all means. :D :animwink:

I'll make Disney a deal: you fix the Yeti and all the other show effects that have allowed to slip into disrepair, and I won't take flash pictures in dark rides out of respect for show quality.

Yeah, didn't think they would go for that.

I had my camera around my neck getting onto Haunted Mansion and the CM said "you don't plan on taking any flash pictures with that do you?" I was actually a little taken aback, but managed to say no. I have only taken flash pictures accidentally. I feel bad when I do it.:(

Yes
If there is nobody around you then go for it...Who really cares at that point? It is VERY annoying though. The worst is on PotC by FAR! EVERY TIME I am on that ride its flash after flash after flash...

Anytime that I have EVER felt the need to take some flash pictures I have gone back to that ride at parks closing and did it then when nobody else is around. I know how much I hate it when someone in front of me is doing it so I could not imagine doing it to someone else.

and the thing is with most of these people taking flash pictures with their point and shoot digital cameras are missing the whole ride experience by looking into their 2.5" lcd screen the entire time and they don't realize that most of what their taking a picture of is too far away to illuminate the objects their attempting to capture. Not to mention that the scenes don't look nearly as good drenched in light.

so not only are they ruining the experience for everyone but their wasting their time as well. You'll get a much better picture without the flash. Regardless though, it's rude to take flash pictures on dark rides.

Flashy light up neck things are also annoying on dark rides when they reflect on the glass in the ballroom scene of HM. Light up Tinkerbell Wings are also very annoying on Pirates....
