video taping 3d rides is tough no matter what ya do the film always looks bad unless you can shoot in 3d of course

also FYI 3d films that have been taped will not work.

hitogoroshi: I recommend my site, Digital Universal for all of your Universal Orlando audio/video/photograph needs. (http://www.digital-universal.com). I've got video of almost every attraction at IOA and USF, including the video of JPRA that you're looking for.

orlpassholder: I've taped 3D movies that look very good. Of course, they lose their 3D quality after you record them with a camcorder. But, if you put one polarized lens (from your 3D glasses) over the camcorder lens, you'll get a crystal clear image.

BTW, it's impossible to record the movie in 3D. The video is polarized at a much higer resolution than any modern camcorder can record. You'd also have to hold the camera perfectly level during the entire show. Finally, you'd need a device which is capable of showing the high-resolution video, which doesn't exist today for home use (HDTV won't cut it, folks).

Let me start by telling you, how cool your site is!!! Great job!!! I knew your site, before I started this post, but I wanted to see, if I could get the rides in a much higher resolution!!!

Thank you Mr. Hitogoroshi

A while back, there was a high-res video of JPRA available at www.ingennet.com in there IOA section. The server doesn't seem to be alive any more (hopefully it's just down temporarily). I have the video, but since it's a whopping 60meg, it won't be easy to send to you. If you can think of a way to do it, let me know, and I'll see what I can do...

I'm in agony while waiting to see these videos! In fact, I'm trying to convert some of my taped trips to avi. My first trial is the kilimanjaro safari. I taped the entire ride back in 99'. Hopefully I can upload it once the server is done being repaired. Hey popkid, any idea when it might be online? I see you are in NJ. Let me know if you need any help/parts, etc. I can't wait!

I been messing with capture all afternoon too. These settings seem to work best with my ATI Radeon 64DDR VIVO card and Canon 8mm camcorder through VirtualDub:

Divx4 low motion
320X240
644kbps bitrate quality
Audio PCM 11kbps mono 8-bit 11kbps (camcorder is mono anyway)

Then I put it through 2D Cleaner

I don't drop any frames at 320X240. I figure since this is 8mm.. my video is probably not recorded any higher than 320X240 on the tape, so it is pointless to capture any higher than 320X240 for me. Is this a correct assumption?

Anyway.. I figure for each minute it is costing me 5.45MB/min. If I can get MPEG audio to work on my captures without locking up and freezing my machine, I can get smaller files. I am comparing my captures/edits with some Lone Gunmen TV episodes I downloaded... they are about 225MB for 45 minutes and look super. These captures/edits I did today look great too, so I am close to the same result as these TV episodes. I have faith If I can tweak my machine a bit more, I will get it. :)

Can't wait to share on PopKid's FTP when he gets it going again.

locking up as well eh? I have a ATI All in wonder 128 Pro 32MEG AGP card. Although it works "ok", it is still not the greatest. I'm messing around with virtual dub because the ATI MMC sucks. I've also been trying to use Adobe Premier but I am no expert and it keeps locking me up. (probably my fault) I'll setup IIS with FTP on my 2K box if I come up with anything decent before the server is back up.

ATI cards are really the bottom of the barrel when it comes to video in/out....especially the All in Wonder cards...they overheat and also really trash the resolution.

As much as I hate saying it..you want GOOD video/IO...get a mac ;)

yup. Macs are probably the best at graphics and video. Unfortunately, I can't keep up with upgrading or replacing two lines of computers when I need my PC for gaming. (I'm addicted to Roller Coaster Tycoon at the moment) Do you know of a decent video capture device for the PC that isn't professional but also not amature quality? I don't do this enough to spend too much but with at baby arriving soon, I would love to convert my camcorder tapes to the computer for sharing with friends/family, etc.

I bought the Dazzle Digital Video Creator (www.dazzle.com) last year. It's great! I haven't tried it on any WDW footage yet, but I plan to. We took our camcorder on our last trip during Christmas & New Years. I have several hours waiting to be converted and edited.

DisneyJedi,

There's all sorts of things wrong with that:

DIVX4 has no "low motion", that's DIVX3 which is outdated.

Using bitrate to set quality is bad - use quality-based percentage.

Use MP3 not PCM - PCM takes up 5-10x the space. Search for the "radium" mp3 codec for the easy way to do this in VirtualDub.

You can get 640x480 quality out of an 8mm tape. Whether you can do it with your cpu & capture card is another question. If you do capture at that resolution you will need to deinterlace.

Make sure you only process the video once, because every time you recompress you lose quality.

See my other post for more info...

Thanks spagmoid. I also just read your great tips on page 22 of this thread.(this is one major thread!) I'm getting really tired now but I'll try your suggestions tomorrow. Then I'll be buying a dazzle device for better input. Even the better versions they offer aren't that expensive. Thanks everyone for sharing your knowledge in this area for us. It is a huge help for someone that seldom does video capturing.
