John Carter was/is a great movie with tons of sequel potential. It was very entertaining. The general public was just never properly introduced to the characters or enticed to see the movie.

Go see John Carter before you judge the movie.

Agree 100%

No kidding. The general public has no idea that it is based on a 95 year old novel. The story, if given a chance, is amazing!

Yeah if they had explained all these cool things you saw in Star Wars, Indiana Jones, etc they all came from ideas created in the John Carter series...then I think this would have gone differently.

THOUGH when it comes out on dvd/bluray etc.... it will likely turn into a late blooming hit.... Sequel I would bet money on it is in the future....even if it is not at this precise moment.

Maybe I'm out of touch...but

Good riddance to the guy who brought us High School musical AND Hannah Montana

...... which both made crap-loads of money for TWDC.

I know it's always in vogue to hate on entertainment designed for children, but from a business standpoint, those were probably some of the best decisions he ever made (if he was that involved, I really don't know much about this side of the company). Compared to John Carter, Prince of Persia, Sorcerer's Apprentice, the list goes on....... these two kiddie franchises brought in the money. I'm not seeing that as a bad thing..........?

This is what happens when you let a $200 million+ movie just get of control and also try to make it a sequel without making it a good movie in the first place. Along with that, a director that has experience in epics should have been used instead of someone that is only experienced with animated films.

Yes one of the side effects of the movies is ip being used in the parks and merch but the main object of making a movie should be to make a good movie. Look at cars 2, it was made primarily for merch and not for a story or to respect the franchise.

For example: I can absolutely see Superheros as a part of something like New York Street at Hollywood Studios. I could see Iron Man saving the Tram car from destruction at Catastrophy Canyon.

OK - Yeah, I can kind of see that I guess. Although the effects would have to be mighty impressive to pull that off.

I don't think the ideas have to be Disney originals. In fact, sometimes, I wish they'd leave some of their original stuff out of the parks (Stitch, Nemo, High School Musical). I just think Universal has created, in such a short time, such a strong identification with those characters at Islands, it would just seem weird at Disney.

I wasn't hating on both of those because it's in "vogue"...I was hating on both of those shows because it prances out rodeo drive style images of kids that are going to create years of eating disorders and LSO.

IMO, Marvel heroes at a Disney park would seem weird in any case. :hurl:

I disagree. Brad Bird (Incredibles, Ratatouille, Iron Giant, Simpsons) did an incredible job with Mission Impossible:Ghost Protocol. It was a huge hit and a good movie. In fact, it's the highest grossing Tom Cruise movie ever.

I thought the discussion about Marvel characters in the parks has been beat to death in another thread due to the current legal possession Universal has to keep them in Islands of Adventure for X amount of time? Frankly, until that agreement dissolves, I don't see any Marvel superheroes having any presence at WDW other than in merchandise and advertising.

Honestly, I don't think Universal has ever used the superheroes to their full thematic advantage other than with Spider-man. The Hulk is a great coaster, sure, but Doctor Doom is a bore. And then that's it. You have the occasional character "parade" ... character photos, and one gift shop with some sporadic and under-themed facades and snack stands. Oh, and an arcade. It's hardly the most dynamic land in that park, and I think Disney could do a better job--even with their cost-cutting habits. Universal needs to start spreading their Potter Dollars to the rest of IoA, especially with simple things like paint jobs! But regardless, I don't see Universal giving up their superheroes any sooner than they potentially have to.

And add yet another person to the list of "No Avatar". I just don't see it working out.

Comparing the Avengers to any other superhero film produced to date is pretty much impossible. This is a VERY unique film, because it's the first time that a TEAM of super heroes who have all starred in their own films have been brought together like this. I believe this film will blow away ALL of the previous Marvel films, and could possibly even find itself eclipsing The Dark Knight's numbers.

It's impossible to even grasp how long the comic book community has been waiting on a TRUE super team movie. I believe the results will shock many.

Ooooh! I wonder if this means The Avengers sucks too! After all, it was just screened a couple of days ago. He may have seen it and realized he'd have 2 flops in a row. If it was great, I can't imagine he wouldn't hope he could save his job.

Hopefully, this will mean Marvel can finally have some consistency with directors now.

Joss Whedon knows how to please cult fan bases. Even at his worst (Dollhouse) the man has figured out how to tell a story, I have full faith in the guy churning out another nerd favorite. Luckily the story he is telling happens to contain some of the most popular film characters of late, so for once it will be a big hit too. The guy deserves it.

I didn't hate John Cater, but it under-performed. I loved Tron Legacy, but it under-performed. Sadly quality does not equal a high box office. Rich Ross made some fun films, but the box office doesn't like fun, it likes safe movies.

Comparing MI:4 to JC1:1 is like oranges to apples. One is a major franchise with large names attached to it, the other is the complete opposite. There are those animation directors that have gone onto major releases, but none of have made a budget of $250 million.

Boxofficemojo has forecasted The Avengers to be the 3rd biggest movie of the summer with a worldwide box office take of $580million. Seems a bit conservative, but they're usually spot on. The Dark Knight Rises and Ice Age are forecasted at 1 and 2.

They are usually pretty close to square, but their forecast for the DK and Avatar were extremely low before they came out as well...I have a problem with that number just because Iron Man 2 did more than that...and while this is the first avengers movie, it's still a bit of a multi-sequel in concept. It should do as well or at least the same as IM2...

That's not Worldwide, that's simply international. Including the US gross it'll be incredibly higher.
