Rich Ross Resigns

Boxofficemojo has forecasted The Avengers to be the 3rd biggest movie of the summer with a worldwide box office take of $580million. Seems a bit conservative, but they're usually spot on. The Dark Knight Rises and Ice Age are forecasted at 1 and 2.

Wow. Ice Age beating the Avengers?

You're right. I thought that seemed very low.

Some sites are already reporting that it's presales have surpassed all of the other individual (i.e. Iron man, thor, CA) movie's pre-sale numbers combined. That's pretty darn impressive.

I don't see how this movie will do less than the last transformers flick...that churned out 1.12 Billion

I would think that Domestically we will see 450+ and Foreign should see at least 750+....all the reviews have been positive, it has a wider audience than TF3.

Toy sales are going to be insane.
This will definitely be a great situation for Disney....it will totally put them back in line after the JC debacle.

Avengers will easily do Star Wars/Lord of the Rings numbers. I would expect closer to Dark Knight and I honestly wouldn't be surprised if it came close to Avatar numbers.

From a financial standpoint, maybe. No one else besides die hard Disney fans will associate this movie with Disney. And nor should they. This movie was in the works (and production) long before Disney got their hands on Marvel.

That would put it in the top 5 domestically of all time. That's aiming pretty high. But hey, this one has the advantage of playing to an audience that will pay the premium for IMAX and 3D, so it's possible.

I think the financial standpoint is what he was talking about, since they lost so much money on John Carter.

that would be correct...

I definitely don't want Disney to get it's fingers into Marvel's creative process whatsoever...let them do what they have successfully done for decades.

I've seen Avengers yesterday night (here in Italy it came out 2 days ago), and it totally rocks. It's *really* the best Marvel movie to date (including non-Marvel Studios produced movies like Spider-Man), it has action and fun and really good characters (it's the first movie to finally nail the Hulk), and has great repeatability (is it spelled right? sorry, i'm italian). It's goin to be HUGE.

I'm still trying to find where ANYONE has said Avengers will not make a ton of money. It's like people are defending something that hasn't been said.:veryconfu

Of course it's going to make a ton of money. What is the discussion exactly?

I wasn't defending the movie or accusing anyone of saying anything negative. Just posting some more articles I found.....

I think the question is 1 ton or multiple tons, isn't it? Will it be in th $500 million range, or the $800 million to $1 billion range. Didn't you actually say that you'd be surprised if it made more than $400 million? Based on the foreign opening, that seems guaranteed -- halfway there on a week overseas without China or Russia. Or did you mean US only when you said that?

Well it is at 218 million so far, without us opening yet. Hopefully it will hit the 800 - 1 billion range. It will have made money back to studios and also serve as a launching off point for the rest of the universe while being produced and distributed by only disney.

Definitely meant US only. I wouldn't say anymore that I'd be surprised if it makes more than $400 million. Actually, considering the amount of IMAX and 3D screens, it most certainly has a huge advantage to do so.

Like I said, unless Disney plans to share some of the money with me, I don't really care if it makes $1 or $1 billion dollars.
