Ratatouille in Epcot

Yes it's obvious what the controversy would be, however if this nation is that ignorant to other nations and cultures then this country is in big trouble. It's obvious from your second post that you respect other faiths, but the point of WS is not to replicate other places, but to provide samples of nations in order to educate people on their cultures. The statue is an essential piece of Brazilian culture and would be essential to place in a Brazilian pavilion.

Comparing this to the CSA flag is comparing apples to oranges a national icon and wonder of the world to a racist flag of a non existent nation.

That was a very respectful and engaging reply. I appreciate being able to carry on a decent debate about this without the name calling and with a little bit of understanding and compassion for other people and other religions.

We unfortunately have an enormous (and I mean enormous, like literally one of the biggest flags in the country) Confederate flag hanging at the crossroads of I-4 and I-75 here in Tampa. I'm not black but I still find it incredibly offensive. According to the Sons Of The Confederacy, that flag stands for the South and not all of the atrocities associated with it.

So, there's no way I can know what the thousands of black people feel driving past that every day just as you can have no idea what going to EPCOT and seeing a huge statue of Jesus would feel like for me. That flag might not have anything but the most innocent of meanings for the people flying it, but that doesn't mean everyone else feels the same way.

Because the CSA does not exist, secondly this:
Confederate_Rebel_Flag.svg

Was not the official flag of the CSA so if the CSA was a nation this flag would not be placed in the park this one would:

Also, the statue is an OFFICIAL ICON of the nation not to mention an OFFICIAL wonder of the modern world, to not include it would be an insult to Brazil. If people thought it would cause controversy then the IOC would not let them hold sports at it's feet, or American TV would not use it in advertisement of the games. It is a recognizable icon of the nation...final.

Ugh. I thought were actually trying to understand and have compassion for what I was trying to say but I guess not.

As for the statue in Brazil, please see my earlier post. It's a beautiful statue and the people of Brazil have every right to be proud of it. I love seeing the pictures from Brazil and look forward to seeing the Olympics in such a beautiful country.

That doesn't take away from the fact that I don't think it should be replicated in WDW. It isn't controversial in Brazil but it certainly would be in WDW.

Meh. This is a silly argument that's derailing a thread about Ratatoille – not Brazil. In respect to the other forum members, I won't be rebutting this any longer. If you SamD23 want to continue trolling about it, be my guest.

Quite simply, because I am Jewish and I've had the Catholic religion shoved down my face my whole life (no disrespect to the Catholic or Christian religions or the people who follow it, I've just had many not-so-nice experiences of people trying to "convert" me). I have the ultimate respect for other faiths and the right of everyone to choose to pray (or to not pray) as they like but that doesn't mean I want to pay $100 for a ticket to an amusement park and have a 100 ft tall statue of Jesus staring down at me.

It's something you simply can't understand unless you've had the experiences I, or someone of a minority religion, have had. It is exactly why I'll never be able to understand what a black or gay person has gone through. I can have compassion, I can listen, I can be educated, but I'll never really know.

If I go to Rio then I understand that I am on their turf and I have made the choice to visit. The statue is an important part of their culture and I completely respect that. That doesn't mean I think it should be replicated at WDW.

The other buildings that have been mentioned are just that: buildings. If they built a replica of Westminster Abbey or the Sistine Chapel, then I would have no problem with it – they're beautiful structures and people can choose to go in or not go in. A huge statue of Jesus, on the other hand, isn't something that you could choose to see or to not see. Whether it would be their intention or not, replicating that statue would have enormous religious implications.
I respect your opinion and feelings on this even though you correctly stated that I don't understand it. I guess I just don't see a replica of that statue in EPCOT having huge religious implications. It's as much a work of art as a religious symbol. There is a statue of The Buddha in the China pavilion but I never felt anyone was trying to convert me or shove their religion in my face. It's a reflection of part of the Chinese culture. Again, I'm not trying to change your mind or put down your opinion. Just laying out how I feel.

I disagree with your statement that this statue of Jesus is the equivalent of a confederate flag. I get that you were trying to say that it is offensive to you, but it's not a great analogy.

I would assume that Disney would conduct some surveys and polls before putting in anything new. I'm sure if a large group of people was offended and expressed that in the surveys they wouldn't go forward.

Agreed. Israel would never happen though.

I'd like to see Russia or Egypt more than any other.
Africa would be pretty solid too. Maybe now that they have a section of AK dedicated to Africa it would be redundant, but the concept art looks solid and I could see some good street entertainment.

You have to consider the current events going on in the world at the time. Russia has the issue with Ukraine and Egypt has its government issues. For these and lot more reasons why there are not going to build Russia and Egypt. Brazil has a higher chance.

I get what you are saying and I'm not going to "troll it any longer", I still disagree with the idea that a smaller version should not be replicated. Agree to disagree?

Going back to Ratatouille here is a map I made of the possibilities of adding the attraction and highlighted two empty pavilion spots in this region:

Check out this post from Disney and More, it details the Africa pavilion:http://disneyandmore.blogspot.com/2014/02/epcot-equatorial-africa-pavilion-world_18.html

I still think it could work out. I do agree that DHS would be the most fitting place for it, Pixar Place needs some Pixar attractions after all, I just don't think that having it in the World Showcase is unacceptable. So here's a question - if they did do it in DHS, where at Pixar Place would be the most appropriate for it?

I think it's terrible that Christian Girls can be kidnapped in Africa, killed in the middle east and no one in this country cares because our news media does not make as big a deal about it as acts against another religion. I have no problem with any religious view. In fact I believe if all religions were properly explained that no one would have a problem. The basic teaching of all religions is that we should all respect each other and live in peace. Put Brazil in with whatever symbol they want. We need to learn and respect each other and that means understanding each other. I went to a training class at work and was asked what a picture of 2 men in tuxes was. I said a groom and his best man. I was told I was wrong and it was 2 men getting married. No I do not have a problem with that answer except I have the right to interpret it the way I see it and so does everyone else. Christians make up an extremely large percentage of the world's population and should be displayed at WDW just like all other religions.

I never said it was going to happen, only that Egypt and Russia were two countries I'd like to see.
