"Rapid Fill" Mugs Coming to Walt Disney World Hotels

On a side note my buddy who is an exec at Pepsi says that a large cola costs about 12 cents for the seller.
And I believe most of that is the cup.

I'd be interested to see the margins based on the size of the account. Disney probably pays a bit more than McDonald's, Yum Brands, and Darden, but significantly less than a neighborhood restaurant (all based on volume).

The short answer is that Disney must see abuse of the system as an issue. The refillable mug program, as it stands now, is only for length of stay at the resort you are staying at. But, people bring back their mugs from previous trips, use their own mugs, etc, which apparently is a big of enough issue that Disney is now limiting the ability to use the refill stations to these RFID enabled mugs.

Makes sense this. In fact at first I was worried, but now, looking back, It did not feel right to me for me to be bringing back my old mug from my last trip two months before. Personally I wanted to go fully legit and get a new mug on the spot. Not bring an old one. But at the time we {parents and I, family reunion and wedding anniversaries at the time} were pressed for money, so we thought at the time to save on money and bring the mugs we got at the last trip on the dining plan two months prior. We were told it was OK, but it still did not feel right {Something about being AP holders I think.} to me. I still feel kinda guilty about it too even now.

The way I see it, they want to try and eliminate the abuse as stated. I've seen people bring a completely NOT DISNEY mug, like a COFFEE MUG from DUNKIN' DONUTS or McDonalds for example. Fill the sucker up, and then leave the resort. Its like they're stealing their drinks!

But this also raises a question; If you do NOT get a RIFD or howevertheheckitisspelled mug, will the machines still despense your drinks ? I mean like over at Club Cool at EPCOT, acrosss from the new Starbucks going in there. That has a fountail refill station.

After thinking about it, I'm fine with this except the price jumping $4/5 or so. Seeing people refilling bottles, old mugs etc got on my nerves so I support this as long as it doesn't limit it to three refills a day like FastPass.

If that happens I'll buy a drink and have them refill as needed, or make it last as long as I can.

It is not the individual cost of the product, it's about taking that cost and multiplying it by the thousands of people per day that might do it. It can add up to a very large amount of money.

For those who don't like the new mug deal and don't have a car to go purchase sodas to keep in your room, place an order with Garden Grocer. We used to do that for every trip. We'd order a case or two of bottled water then multi-packs of plastic-bottled sodas in everyone's favorite varieties. The items were always delivered around the time we arrived at the resort. Stocking our fridge was part of unpacking and settling in. It's convenient. I always favored the bottled sodas because you could recap them and reduce waste. Easy to pop a couple in the side pockets of the backpack. Even tho the bottles are more expensive, when you break down the cost per bottle you still come out well ahead of Disney's prices. AND, if you prefer the refreshing cup of soda with ice just go to a quick service location and get a cup of ice. Pour your own soda.

Oh no I wasn't saying "let people steal, Disney can afford it." I was just saying "hm, interesting, I wonder..."

Did that on my honeymoon. Cherios with banana on top have become my standard WDW breakfast.

No it will limit what it dispenses. Z like water only unless you have a valid RFID cup/mug

Ok so what about annual passholders? Are we just supposed to buy 30 mugs a year?

I never complain but in this case this is ridiculous and I hope they have a solution for AP's. Otherwise I guess no more "mugs" at all for us anymore.

Do you stay at a resort when you go to WDW? How long are your stays?

I don't see how this would change anything in regards to being an AP/frequent visitor. The mugs were only valid for length of stay at the resort you were staying at. If you went multiple times a year under the previous system, you'd have to buy a new mug each time -- if one was following the rules of the program. This new wrinkle just makes it so that one has to follow the rules of the program.

Actually, that brings up a good question -- I would think you had to be staying at a WDW resort to get the mugs previously. But with this new system, could anyone (not someone staying on site) buy a mug? I would think they could since you can buy it tied to a number of specific days, not just "length of stay" at the resort.

QWell that will seriously flatten things out. without the proper mug all you get is flat pop, not good plan. But, I can see it hammering down on the abusers. SO in the end, it does make sense. But the mention of a time delay. How long is that ? single refill per hour is too limiting. Two or three per hour, space them out twenty minutes apart. {that is how lnog it takes me to drink a Coke or Pepsi}

Here is a thought; 60/3=20 minute segments, spaced evenly you get three refills per hour. However, it also could limit with the fact that say you use two refills in an hour, then the hour passes and BAM, you're stuck for an hour, or you still have soda in the mug or something.

Weird thoughts, I think I need to go to bed.

My typical Disney Morning Breakfast: Cinnabun, and a very large Coke.

So as a local AP holder, I would need to buy a mug if I wanted a fountain drink with my favorite resort meal (say I was really craving the tie dye cheesecake at Pop)....I don't like the bottled Coke products, so I guess I would have to buy an overpriced mug for that meal if I wasn't staying there. Boo hiss. Part of the fun of being a local is the ability to end a day at the parks with a quick drive over to a resort quick service food court & we can soak in that resort's "vibe" for a moment & then head home.

No you just buy a normal soda - the cups are RFID enabled too
