I don't know of anyone actually being punished for this debacle, though quite a few have been moved to other jobs. Three and a half years of a once profitable location sitting empty. It boggles the mind.

But isnt that the problem....."moved to other jobs" I guess there is a culture in that buisness model we looking from the outside just dont understand.

A business that punishes employees who take risks is really short-sighted because that quickly quashes all innovation. So while the PI club-closure decision was a mistake, punishment hopefully did not follow. But what happened since then sure seems to deserve punishment to a number of decision makers. When it's been this many years with this much nothing, and the fingers do seem to be stuck in ears to prevent hearing the calls, then there should be accountability! The whole HW announcement and backtracking........geeze!

Taking risks is important--but you also have to do the basic research before you take the risk. You can't just assume "it worked in Anaheim, it'll work in Orlando too." You have to know what your demographics are, what the market will bear, etc. The fact TDO has been unable in 3.5 years to rent out a single club per the original plan shows me the higher-ups never did their due diligence.

I think there is a difference between a risk and arrogant foolishness. Had there been signed leases in place that had since not panned out, that would have been a risk. Closing the clubs and just hoping for replacements to fall into your lap was just stupid and definitely worthy of punishment. The decision is made worse because it was undertaken to avoid risk.

Can't argue with that fact. Seems like they all went to that party in Minnesota with Schussler, were mesmerized by his restaurant concepts and then came back to Florida and announced they were closing everything!

But then nothing happened.

Not everyone though you were nuts... I knew why I took a last ride on Jaws last September ;)

And I thought I broke the news about the wand? :D Or put another way... Track records are good should one need to prove it.

BTW... What happened to our new member here? Has he been avenged? I take one GMT induced sleep and someone's suddenly conspicuous by their absence.

As I recall, you were both among the first with the wand news, just posting on two different sites.
All while Corrus was arguing the other way.

I took my last ride in October during HHNs, but I never thought it would be gone so quickly. If this were Disney, then they'd just be putting the meetings to decide when to close it on the agenda.

I don't think you or I or anyone needs to prove anything, but our track records do speak for themselves as does our knowledge and perspective.

But I'm sure my post hit before yours did ... that's even with your time advantage across da pond. :ROFLOL:

Well, my question is where the hell were you? You claim to be an expert, an insider and my good pal Merfie swears you are an Imagineer (if he only knew!:zipit:) yet you were silent on said wandage? If there's one thing we kings of the fanbois :king: should know about is giant wands. OK, that didn't sound right. But clearly you were sloshed from a night at the AC and missed the news. I only found out about all the folks here saying I was nuts (I am, of course, but that has nothing to do with the info I post!) when a friend emailed me a link. At the time, I was lost in the laughing place and every once in a while someone would mention this mythical 'Lee' character and all I could ask was 'who the (blank) is that (blank) and what (blank) is he spouting' ... as to Corrus, apparently he had a real attatchment to the wand.

~I wonder if he has any pieces of it!~

I was simply playing it safe until I knew for sure which way the wind was blowing.

[/I]

I reluctantly started a thread back in 2007 about the Wand going away, based on what WDW1974 had posted over on LP. Since there had been so many threads created about the Wand, I figured I would be savaged for starting this one.

Corrus was very abrupt with me to say the least. After he was done calling me an idiot, Lee did point out that details of the agreement were being worked out. I honestly can't remember what Martin had to say. If anybody has access to archived post going back to the Summer of 2007 I'm sure they could locate it.

Lee, Martin, and JT's buddy 74 all new about it, but 74 was the first to post about it. Anyway that's the way I remember it. Of course millions of my brain cells have succumb to $8.00 a cup World Showcase beer since then.

Well, with the information that you were the one who started the thread, it is very easy to find it. So here it is in case anyone wants to read the flame wars of 2007.

I took a dig for some fun should anyone be interested....

June 24th 2007:

That's absolutely correct. It was originally posted by Spirit of 74 on laughingplace.com..

I recall I found out when I was told the walls were going up with 2 weeks notice.

Anyway, about the area formally known as Pleasure Island and now rather a thorny subject at TDO...

as it should be! People should be fired over it. The one thing I've seen is they aren't afraid to mention the name or reference the clubs, as we have seen with both the AC CM event and CW holiday shows. I just wish someone would have the balls to admit the mistake and truly DO SOMETHING about it.

Wow! What a blast from da past. I never read those threads (the one above and the Star Tours one too!) ... first, sincere thanks to CBOMB. He was always my favorite minion of darkness and Disney evil, but I had no idea how much he had my back over here before I ever started reading and posting. I think in addition to the first two round of drinks at the Territory Lounge, I'll also pay for an appetizer and bring back some DLP ephemera (doesn't that word sound ... girlie?)

Also, nice to see my now pal Lee sitting on the fence while giving props out to me. I wouldn't have made quite as much fun of him in the laughing place if I had known him ... well, actually I would have made even more! ... Wonder what happened to so many folks referenced or posting there.

We know Merfie flamed :fork: out on every single Disney discussion forum that exists (and likely a few that don't:ROFLOL:) and now spews hate in the Twitverse while wondering why Disney won't credential him ... Corrus turned into Tim G and disappeared before I could ever get into a good online argument with him. But for an alleged 'insider' he sure was wrong a lot. ... Jedimaster ... well, I think I made him cry and stop posting on Disney forums, but I am sure he got the point in the end. And he was a wonderful boy when I met him at EPCOT a few years back. Enigma ... he was always such a mystery cloaked in a conundrum. Wonder where he is these days. And Lee MacDonald is apparently no longer employed by Disney in any way and his terrific Tales fanzine has apparently been put out of business by his pals at Disney with the much inferior D23. He doesn't even post anymore and has basically fallen off the grid.

Funny how we see how long it took to get Star Tours done, which reminds me that I'll get to see the classic ST next month in Paris again!:)

And all those rumors ... from Disney-MGM being rebranded Disney-Pixar Studios to it getting an Indy ride and Cars area ... they were pretty laughable then and they are now.

I guess I could take this opportunity to say 'I told ya so' ...

~But I think we all know who was right!~

A franchise that certainly needs a prescence somewhere. But where? Several good possibilities I think.

~I'll be gone 500 miles when the day is done~

Well this could be one, tianas on the lakefront. Or they could have something at port orleans. Also something on roa in mk.

As I said in my earlier post, the small and unique shops were in no way putting a strain on anything. The company's profits were just as high as they are now, and guest satisfaction at high levels.

Some shops were intended to be part of the show, not to be huge money makers. Magic Shop, Antique Shop, Perfume Shop, etc. All were designed not only to make some money, but to add to the theme and ambience of the area in which they were located. The original Imagineers and park operators understood that, and placed a higher value on show than on the P&L statement of the churro cart.

Again, you are looking at Disney as a normal business, where ordinary business practice makes good sense. It isn't and it doesn't.
Show must always come before Efficiency. It is what sets Disney apart from the competition, and makes it the "magical" place it has always been.
The Keys were put in that order for a reason, by people much smarter than those who currently call the shots.

nicely done. :sohappy:

Also Adventureland (bit of a stretch) and the Studios are a possibility. Or, really thinking outside the box, a seperate ticket to the Island in Bay Lake where there could be a dinner show and other diversions and attractions. Could be a better fit than Myst or Pirates or some such franchise.

I love this post it's like a "where are they now" on vh1's behind the music. Steve any chance you'd let merf come back to stir things up for a month? I vote for early September when all the kidders go back to school and the boards have a lull.
