Trip Report Oh September - we'll miss you so - A Sept 18th to the 27th trip report

Hi everyone. Well, we’re finally back from a 10 day trip to Disney, so it’s time to start a trip report. Anyone interested in the PTR can find it here:http://forums.wdwmagic.com/threads/...eptember-pre-trip-report.873402/#post-5711274
First, the introductions:
PH294220912 - 0053.jpg

From left to right – Our DS Liam, , DW Tammy, me (Graham) and our DD Stephanie (this picture is from last year, so you'll be able to see how much the kids have changed from last year's trip).

We were down at the world from Sept 18th to the 27th, in a one bedroom villa at AKL. As the title hints at, this will be our last September trip for a while. Steph starts High School next year, so we won't be able to take her out of school anymore. So, let's make the most of this last September trip shall we...here goes:

Day -1 - Sept 17
Day -1 started the same as any other day for us. Tammy and I were up at 5:15am and got ready for work (I’m the manager of the advertising accounting department at Tim Hortons (a coffee and donut chain), and my wife runs an in-home daycare). Work was fairly busy which was good because it really made the time fly. Before I knew it, 4:00 had rolled around and I said my last goodbyes to my team and headed home. The drive home was OK – about 45 minutes. Tammy and the kids were waiting at the door when I got home. 10 minutes to pack the car, we were on the road to Buffalo. We crossed into Buffalo and headed to Sam’s Club to pick up some breakfast items (pastries, etc), and to Target to pick up some Disney gift cards (you can pay for the gift cards with the Target card, which knocks 5% off the price (which pretty much covers the foreign exchange for us Canadians)). We picked up $300 in cards with the plan to use them to cover some of the QS meals while we were there (we would have purchased more, but we weren’t sure how this would work, so we decided to start small this year – if it works, we’ll do more next time we go). With all the pre-trip shopping out of the way, we headed to the Sleep Inn across from the Buffalo airport (with a brief stop in at the airport to weigh our largest bags to make sure we weren’t overweight with them), and were in bed around 10:00. Hard to believe, but the trip we’ve been planning and looking forward to for almost a year is finally here.

Day 1 – Sept 18
The wake-up call came at 4:30am (and the alarm on my phone went off at approximately the same time). Everyone got up, got ready, and headed down to the lobby of the hotel for a quick bite, before taking the shuttle over to the airport. We breezed through security check, grabbed a bit more caffeine and hung out at our gate.
20130918_065502-jpg.33987

We started boarding the AirTran plane around 7:30, and were in the air just after 8.
IMG_9065.JPG

The flight down was pretty uneventful, and we were on the ground in Orlando around 10:30. One cool thing was that the plane had to approach the runway from the opposite side it normally does when we fly down, so we flew over Universal, and saw the MK in the distance. We love the Orlando airport. It’s a really nice airport, and it’s the first stop on our Disney trip which makes it even better. We flew through airport to the Magical Express desk, and were on one of the best bus rides known to man in no time at all.
20130918_103831.jpg

The Magical Express ride was good as usual. One kind of funny thing happened when did the drop off at AoA. The driver had announced that we were at AoA so everyone staying here could get off. After everyone got off, the driver pulled away and was about halfway between AoA and POP when a lady comes running from the back of the bus. Turns out she didn’t hear the announcement to get off. I thought the driver was going to turn around and drive back…Nope…opened the door right there and told her and her family they could get off here then...

Hey... that's where we're staying
20130918_114138.jpg

Anyways….We pulled into AKL around 11 and were greeted by David, who was a manager at the hotel. “Welcome Home Burnett family” was how we were greeted – I liked the personal touch of knowing our name. He took us into the lobby and sat us down on a couch and said he’d handle the check-in for us. We had already done on-line check in so everything was pretty much ready (and, SCORE, our room was ready too). We were up on the 5th floor and a bit of a hike from the lobby (and no savannah view) but we were happy. We went to the concierge desk and bought our park passes (8 days of park passes with park hopper and waterparks and more), then headed to the store to get our mugs. I noticed the Rapid Fill program was rolled out here, so it will be interesting to see how that works. After all that we headed up to our room. We did the quick room tour, dropped off our carry-ons, then headed out to the busses. We decided that since we were so close, AK would be the park today. I also made another decision…I decided not to bring my camera (I had my phone with the camera on it, but I didn’t bring the DSLR with me). Let me explain…I love taking pictures (I didn’t say I was good at it, I just like it), but too often I find myself being more concerned with getting the perfect picture than with enjoying the experience that I’m taking the picture of. So, for the first day, I left the big camera in the room.
The bus to AK pulled up, and before we knew it we were there. The first thing I noticed when we got to the park was that something was missing…the big AK sign that used to be between the bus stop and the front gates. It was there last year:
Disney 2012 051.JPG

Oh well, no biggie. We flew through bag check, then I headed to the customer service desk to do something we had never done before…buy a Tables in Wonderland card (why you can’t buy the TiW card at the hotel is beyond me). Up until this year we had always done the dining plan, and it worked pretty well for us. This year, however, a few things changed: 1) Liam turned 10, so we would now be 4 adults on the dining plan and 2) Disney raised the dining plan price twice between September 2012 and September 2013. Being an accountant, I did some number crunching and realized that based on how we eat (we aren’t big eaters, and DD is more of a picky/simple eater) that we could save quite a bit not buying the dining plan this year. I decided to track the costs of everything we bought that would have been covered by the dining plan, and see where we ended up at the end. I can tell you that the standard dining plan for 4 adults for 9 days would have been $2,121. Oh...btw, the card is good until October 31, 2014, so it may get two trips worth of use.
Could this be the source of some major savings? Time will tell

IMG_9130.JPG

After TiW is purchased, and with 4 KttW cards just itching to be used, we approached the entrance poles. A quick tap and finger scan and we were in. Problem…it started raining. Bah. We decided lunch would be the best way to start since we were all kind of hungry, and hopefully the rain would pass by the time we were done. The kids wanted to do Restaurantasorous, so we headed there. A cool thing about the AK QS restaurants is that they let you use TiW in most of them. We got to the restaurant just as it started pouring. For lunch Steph got the mac and cheese dog, Liam got the bacon burger, Tammy got the chicken nuggets, and I got the grilled chicken sandwich. All were good and, bonus, the rain had stopped.

So the next decision to make…what to ride first. I will say that the rain pretty much emptied the park out, which was great for getting on rides. We were so close to Dinoland, so the kids picked Dinosaur as the first ride. The ride was pretty good, but the dinosaur that come out and roars at you when they take your picture was not working (which made the picture look weird since everyone was looking at the substitute dinosaur on the opposite side of where the roaring one was, except for me, who was looking the wrong way expecting to be roared at). Anyways…not a bad start. Primeval Whirl was next (Steph loves this one). Next up was my favourite – Expedition Everest. I love this ride. I never got to experience it with a fully functioning yeti, so I can only imagine how much more awesome it would be. We went on twice, and walked on both times. After EE it was safari (one of Tammy’s favourites). It was really good. The lions were quite active this time (which made me wish I had my better camera). It was really funny to watch. There were two female lions and one male. The one female was at the very top of the rock formation and every time the male lion tried to get up there, she would swat him in the head…”They’re so much like us”.
20130918_150027.jpg

After this, the kids wanted to do Everest again (yeah…the “kids” wanted to do it again). So we head back to Asia, and rode Everest 3 more times (the kids each wanted to do one ride alone, and one together). Fun times. We decided to call it a day for the park, and headed back to the hotel to freshen up for dinner. Dinner tonight was ‘Ohana – a first night tradition for us.
IMG_9073.JPG

I had purposely booked the meal for a bit later (6:50) so we could watch Wishes from our table. We requested a window seat, and were in woodfired meat heaven in no time.

day 9 continued
All of that took around 3 hours, so we were getting close to lunch. We hit up Cosmic Rays – 2 burgers and 2 grilled chickens. All were great. We got seats right up by Sonny Eclipse, so we had fun watching the show and eating.
IMG_9844.JPG

IMG_9847.JPG

With full stomachs, we left Cosmic Rays and headed into Tomorrowland. I was checking the My Disney Experience App and thought there was an error…it was saying Space Mountain had a 10 minute wait. That didn’t make sense since it was supposed to be closed until tomorrow. We wandered over and, sure enough, SM was open. Turns out (according to the CM at the door) the maintenance crew pulled an all-nighter and wrapped up a day early. That was a nice surprise so we rode through space one last time. So we had looped the park now, and had done pretty much everything we wanted. We asked the kids what they wanted to do. Liam really wanted to do the Speedway, and Steph wanted to do Under the Sea on last time, so we split up (I went with Steph and Tammy did Speedway with Liam).
IMG_9848.JPG

It started raining while we were in line and we got pretty wet. I also couldn’t figure why the line-up for Under the sea was 30 minutes. I came to the conclusion that omni-movers shouldn’t have fastpasses. There really is no reason for it as the load rates per minute on these things should be pretty fast, and fastpasses just slow everything down. Anyways, we finally got on and had one last trip Under the Sea.
IMG_9865.JPG

A sneak-peek of the mine train
IMG_9868.JPG

We met up with Tammy and Liam, rode Winnie the Pooh (using the fastpasses – so apparently I’m against fastpasses for omni-movers unless I am in possession of said fastpass???). After Pooh we headed back to Tomorrowland. We rode Carousel of Progress (which I still love. I wish there was a way to add more scenes to it without losing any of the existing ones), and then ended our day at MK with a quick trip around Tomorrowland on the Peoplemover.
IMG_9870.JPG

So it was around 2:30 now, and we decided we’d head back to our room and finish packing. On the way out we stopped by the Main St Ice Cream Parlour where Steph got a root beer float.
IMG_9876.JPG

IMG_9875.JPG

Liam and I went to Starbucks and got frappes,
IMG_9878.JPG

and Tammy got a frozen OJ from one of the cars at the exit.
IMG_9879.JPG

With heavy hearts, we passed under the railway and headed back the bus stop for the last time (at least from the MK). We got back to the resort and did some last minute shopping (I picked up the soundtrack CD of the Animal Kingdom which is really good), and then headed up to the room to finish packing.

day 9 continued
It didn’t take long to finish packing which was good.
IMG_9881.JPG

Tonight dinner was actually just downstairs which was very convenient. Yup, tonight we were excited to be trying Sanaa.

Before dinner we wandered around the resort. It was right around feeding time for the animals, so it was neat to see them all gathering around to be fed

IMG_9893.JPG

IMG_9911.JPG

IMG_9913.JPG
We showed up at Sanaa around 5 and were seated quickly.
IMG_9924.JPG

We had requested a window seat which we got. The view from our table

IMG_9925.JPG

We started with the bread service, and paid the extra couple of dollars to get all the dips (9 in total). We also paid a few more dollars for some additional naan bread.
IMG_9927.JPG

IMG_9926.JPG

Everyone loved the bread service.

For dinner Tammy, Liam and I all picked from the slow cooked meat section, and Steph got the tandoori shrimp.
IMG_9928.JPG

IMG_9930.JPG

IMG_9932.JPG

We all really enjoyed it. For dessert Steph got the decorate-your-own-cookie, Liam and Tammy got the bread pudding, and I got the dessert trio.

IMG_9942.JPG

IMG_9939.JPG

IMG_9940.JPG

Tammy and I also got a pressed-pot of coffee.
IMG_9935.JPG

We all loved Sanaa (well Tammy and I did. The kids liked it, but I wouldn’t say they loved it). This is another one I’d fully recommend.

Oh, yeah...this bird was also very interested in us while we ate
IMG_9959.JPG

After dinner we walked back upstairs and the kids stopped in at Community Hall one last time. Tammy and I went up and got our big bags and brought them down to get weighed (I think we’re getting good at this – both were under 50lbs). We got the kids, changed into our bathing suits, and headed down to the pool (again, for “one last time”). We had fun down at the pool, and will really miss it when we go home. So that was pretty much it for the day. I still find it hard to believe, but tomorrow is our last day.

One last day to go...

DAY 10 - Sept 27th :(
So here it is….the last day. 10 days has gone by fast. We’ve had a great time and will really miss being here. Fortunately, our flights weren’t until 5:00, so we had a good chunk of the day at Disney still. We woke up a bit earlier today (we have breakfast reservations at Boma at 9:45), and finished packing our carry-ons. We did one last sweep of the room to make sure we hadn’t left anything, grabbed our bags, and headed to the front door. I took one last look at the room before I walked out the door. I’m going to miss our room. We did the long slow walk down the hallway to the elevator, rode the elevator down to the lobby, and got in line at baggage check. We checked our big bags and then handed our carry-ons to bell services to hold for us, then hopped the shuttle to Jambo. We were a bit earlier than we thought we would be (9:00), but we were seated right away. The breakfast buffet was really good (we decided we’d fill up with a big breakfast and then not eat again until we got back to Buffalo). The omelette bar was great (Steph even tried a spinach omelette that she liked).

IMG_0036.JPG

We were done Breakfast around 10, and decided to close our trip out the same way it started…Animal Kingdom. We got on the bus at Jambo and were at AK in a few minutes. Of course the first stop was Everest (although we stopped for a few minutes as we saw Devine in the Oasis (which was weird – I thought she was only in the walkway between Africa and Asia).
IMG_0053.JPG

Anyways, we went to Everest and rode it twice.
IMG_0064.JPG

IMG_0070.JPG

Off we go
IMG_0071.JPG

IMG_0074.JPG

After Everest we decided we’d catch the Finding Nemo show. We all liked it (Tammy was almost crying as she finds the ending to be kind of sad (Nemo growing up and leaving his Dad)). After Nemo it was Primeval Whirl which had a 10 minute wait. Dinosaur was up next. Another great ride through time.
IMG_0076.JPG

We also ran into our friends in line for Dinosaur (unplanned), so we spent a few minutes talking to them, saying our goodbyes (although we all go to the same church, so it was more a “see you next week”).

Day 10 continued

The kids decided they wanted to do Everest one last time, so we headed back to Asia. The My Disney Experience app said there was a 10 minute wait, but the sign when we got there said 35 minutes. We gave it some thought, and made the tough decision not to wait (that means that our last ride was Dinosaur which was also our first ride when we got here 10 days ago). We did grab fast passes just to have them.
IMG_0094.JPG

IMG_0096.JPG

On the way out we stopped at the Royal Amandapour Tea company and got three frozen chai tea lattes, and Steph got a frozen lemonade from a cart.
IMG_0103.JPG

IMG_0106.JPG

We found a quiet little spot to sit and enjoy our drinks, and talked about the things we liked best about our trip. After our drinks we decided to head out (it was around 1:20 and our ME bus back to the airport was scheduled for 2:05). We did the long walk back to the front of the park, passed through the exits, and that was it.
IMG_0109.JPG

Our park time was over.
Steph wasn't quite ready to go yet...
IMG_0110.JPG

Steph and Liam consoling each other on the way back to the bus for the last time
IMG_0113.JPG

You know, it’s kind of weird. As much as it sucks to be leaving, I don’t feel the usual kind of “sad” feeling. I mean yeah, we’ll miss being there and all the fun we have together when we’re there, but I don’t have the Disney blues this time.

So we get back to AKL and grab our carry-ons and then sit and wait for the Magical Express bus (I think they should name it something else when it’s taking you back to the airport. Maybe the Horrible Express).
IMG_0132.JPG

At 2:05 on the dot our ME bus arrived, and we were on our way back to Orlando Airport.
IMG_0120.JPG

It’s funny how excited you are to see some of the landmarks when you arrive in Orlando, and how kind of “blah” you feel when you see them on the way back to the airport. Our flight home was on time (we flew Jet Blue for the first time, and loved it), and we were back in Buffalo around 7:30.
IMG_0137.JPG

We grabbed our car, and drove home to Hamilton, arriving just after 10. So that’s it. I’ll have some closing thoughts shortly.

Lol! love that comment.

Sanaa is also one of our favorites. Great report, enjoyed reading!

TIMS.

I'm in China right now and craving a half coffee half hot chocolate and a plain bagel- it was mean to even mention it! It also disturbs me that you had t mention it was a "coffee and donut chain". They don't know what they're missing!

I'm from Cape Breton, and I'm jealous you can just drive over to Buffalo for a flight - we have to drive TO Halifax (3hrs) and flying international is expensive and (sometimes) so painful with Air Canada! One of the (only) perks to being a Central Canadian ;) Kidding, kidding (though I'm a Maritime girl through and through)

One of my really good friends had/has family in Hamilton and she loves it there! :)

Enjoyed your TR and your "annual photos" - the compare and contrast is cute. Reminds me of my fam!

I want to eat all that food, also. Especially Saana - I wantd to go last trip but it just didn't make the cut (my sister is a super picky eater).

Just discovered this wonderful trip report. Strangely, I feel compelled to go and get a cup of coffee... :cautious:

Quite a bit of growing took place between last year and this year!

I think you would really enjoy staying at the VWL, we love it. Sorry you didn't seem to care for OKW, that's our home resort and I'm partial to it. It is spread out, but to me it feels like a small town (I grew up in NYC and live in its burbs, so small town is exotic to me!), and it's really got much more of that "welcome home" atmosphere, because each building seems like a home, and your parking is right outside the door. Being that you take DME, parking is a non-issue for you, though.

Actually "oh, no"d out loud when I read about Steph's friend bailing on AK after you'd cancelled your BOG lunch to accommodate.

I enjoyed your review of Raglan Road and will add it to my list of places to do. I'll be interested to see your evaluation of TiW vs. DDP. We've always gotten a TiW card, ever since they started making it available to all APs (and then DVC members), we find it a great deal for how we like to dine.

Sanaa was great. I don't know why we never ate there before, but we loved it.

And yes, I'm dead set against fastpasses unless I'm in possession of one ;)

Where to start...

I feel your pain. I've read your trip reports and noticed that Tim Hortons was usually in them so I can imagine what it's like when you want your fix and there's nothing you can do about it. Get your family to send you a care package with some Tims in it.

I know all about you maritime girls. My nephew is dating a girl from PEI so I've been indoctrinated in the east coast ways.

Hamilton is nice. Yeah, we're fortunate that we live so close to the US. One of the guys that works for me got return flights from Niagara Falls (NY) to Fort Lauderdale for something crazy like $75 return on Spirit Airlines. We looked at flying out of Toronto or Hamilton, but it was more than double what we paid flying out of Buffalo.

Sanaa was great. We were concerned since Steph is a bit of a picky eater, but even she liked it. Maybe one day you'll get there.

Thanks for reading. Glad you enjoyed it.

Coffee is awesome.

It's not that we didn't like OKW. It looked really nice and we're not opposed to staying there, but it is pretty spread out. Our home resort is Saratoga Springs, but we found that one to be really spread out to (although we did like the 5 minute walk to Downtown Disney).

Yeah, cancelling the fastpass test at BoG was tough, but no biggie. We still had a great day at AK.

Raglan Road is great. I don't think it gets the credit it deserves. It was our first time going, but we will definitely go back without hesitation. Just can't say enough good things about it.

I will have some closing thoughts up shortly, including the TiW summary (I'll give you a sneak preview though - we saved around $550 dollars using TiW as opposed to buying the meal plan).

Thanks for reading the report. Glad you enjoyed it

What a great TR - and Dead Tim's should give you a bonus for the product placement(s)! ;)

I'm originally from Minnesota (almost Canadian, I like to say) and funnily, nothing gives me that I'm in Canada feeling like seeing a Tim Horton's. Mmm...wish they were in London...mmm...
