Trip Report Oh September - we'll miss you so - A Sept 18th to the 27th trip report

Hi everyone. Well, we’re finally back from a 10 day trip to Disney, so it’s time to start a trip report. Anyone interested in the PTR can find it here:http://forums.wdwmagic.com/threads/...eptember-pre-trip-report.873402/#post-5711274
First, the introductions:
PH294220912 - 0053.jpg

From left to right – Our DS Liam, , DW Tammy, me (Graham) and our DD Stephanie (this picture is from last year, so you'll be able to see how much the kids have changed from last year's trip).

We were down at the world from Sept 18th to the 27th, in a one bedroom villa at AKL. As the title hints at, this will be our last September trip for a while. Steph starts High School next year, so we won't be able to take her out of school anymore. So, let's make the most of this last September trip shall we...here goes:

Day -1 - Sept 17
Day -1 started the same as any other day for us. Tammy and I were up at 5:15am and got ready for work (I’m the manager of the advertising accounting department at Tim Hortons (a coffee and donut chain), and my wife runs an in-home daycare). Work was fairly busy which was good because it really made the time fly. Before I knew it, 4:00 had rolled around and I said my last goodbyes to my team and headed home. The drive home was OK – about 45 minutes. Tammy and the kids were waiting at the door when I got home. 10 minutes to pack the car, we were on the road to Buffalo. We crossed into Buffalo and headed to Sam’s Club to pick up some breakfast items (pastries, etc), and to Target to pick up some Disney gift cards (you can pay for the gift cards with the Target card, which knocks 5% off the price (which pretty much covers the foreign exchange for us Canadians)). We picked up $300 in cards with the plan to use them to cover some of the QS meals while we were there (we would have purchased more, but we weren’t sure how this would work, so we decided to start small this year – if it works, we’ll do more next time we go). With all the pre-trip shopping out of the way, we headed to the Sleep Inn across from the Buffalo airport (with a brief stop in at the airport to weigh our largest bags to make sure we weren’t overweight with them), and were in bed around 10:00. Hard to believe, but the trip we’ve been planning and looking forward to for almost a year is finally here.

Day 1 – Sept 18
The wake-up call came at 4:30am (and the alarm on my phone went off at approximately the same time). Everyone got up, got ready, and headed down to the lobby of the hotel for a quick bite, before taking the shuttle over to the airport. We breezed through security check, grabbed a bit more caffeine and hung out at our gate.
20130918_065502-jpg.33987

We started boarding the AirTran plane around 7:30, and were in the air just after 8.
IMG_9065.JPG

The flight down was pretty uneventful, and we were on the ground in Orlando around 10:30. One cool thing was that the plane had to approach the runway from the opposite side it normally does when we fly down, so we flew over Universal, and saw the MK in the distance. We love the Orlando airport. It’s a really nice airport, and it’s the first stop on our Disney trip which makes it even better. We flew through airport to the Magical Express desk, and were on one of the best bus rides known to man in no time at all.
20130918_103831.jpg

The Magical Express ride was good as usual. One kind of funny thing happened when did the drop off at AoA. The driver had announced that we were at AoA so everyone staying here could get off. After everyone got off, the driver pulled away and was about halfway between AoA and POP when a lady comes running from the back of the bus. Turns out she didn’t hear the announcement to get off. I thought the driver was going to turn around and drive back…Nope…opened the door right there and told her and her family they could get off here then...

Hey... that's where we're staying
20130918_114138.jpg

Anyways….We pulled into AKL around 11 and were greeted by David, who was a manager at the hotel. “Welcome Home Burnett family” was how we were greeted – I liked the personal touch of knowing our name. He took us into the lobby and sat us down on a couch and said he’d handle the check-in for us. We had already done on-line check in so everything was pretty much ready (and, SCORE, our room was ready too). We were up on the 5th floor and a bit of a hike from the lobby (and no savannah view) but we were happy. We went to the concierge desk and bought our park passes (8 days of park passes with park hopper and waterparks and more), then headed to the store to get our mugs. I noticed the Rapid Fill program was rolled out here, so it will be interesting to see how that works. After all that we headed up to our room. We did the quick room tour, dropped off our carry-ons, then headed out to the busses. We decided that since we were so close, AK would be the park today. I also made another decision…I decided not to bring my camera (I had my phone with the camera on it, but I didn’t bring the DSLR with me). Let me explain…I love taking pictures (I didn’t say I was good at it, I just like it), but too often I find myself being more concerned with getting the perfect picture than with enjoying the experience that I’m taking the picture of. So, for the first day, I left the big camera in the room.
The bus to AK pulled up, and before we knew it we were there. The first thing I noticed when we got to the park was that something was missing…the big AK sign that used to be between the bus stop and the front gates. It was there last year:
Disney 2012 051.JPG

Oh well, no biggie. We flew through bag check, then I headed to the customer service desk to do something we had never done before…buy a Tables in Wonderland card (why you can’t buy the TiW card at the hotel is beyond me). Up until this year we had always done the dining plan, and it worked pretty well for us. This year, however, a few things changed: 1) Liam turned 10, so we would now be 4 adults on the dining plan and 2) Disney raised the dining plan price twice between September 2012 and September 2013. Being an accountant, I did some number crunching and realized that based on how we eat (we aren’t big eaters, and DD is more of a picky/simple eater) that we could save quite a bit not buying the dining plan this year. I decided to track the costs of everything we bought that would have been covered by the dining plan, and see where we ended up at the end. I can tell you that the standard dining plan for 4 adults for 9 days would have been $2,121. Oh...btw, the card is good until October 31, 2014, so it may get two trips worth of use.
Could this be the source of some major savings? Time will tell

IMG_9130.JPG

After TiW is purchased, and with 4 KttW cards just itching to be used, we approached the entrance poles. A quick tap and finger scan and we were in. Problem…it started raining. Bah. We decided lunch would be the best way to start since we were all kind of hungry, and hopefully the rain would pass by the time we were done. The kids wanted to do Restaurantasorous, so we headed there. A cool thing about the AK QS restaurants is that they let you use TiW in most of them. We got to the restaurant just as it started pouring. For lunch Steph got the mac and cheese dog, Liam got the bacon burger, Tammy got the chicken nuggets, and I got the grilled chicken sandwich. All were good and, bonus, the rain had stopped.

So the next decision to make…what to ride first. I will say that the rain pretty much emptied the park out, which was great for getting on rides. We were so close to Dinoland, so the kids picked Dinosaur as the first ride. The ride was pretty good, but the dinosaur that come out and roars at you when they take your picture was not working (which made the picture look weird since everyone was looking at the substitute dinosaur on the opposite side of where the roaring one was, except for me, who was looking the wrong way expecting to be roared at). Anyways…not a bad start. Primeval Whirl was next (Steph loves this one). Next up was my favourite – Expedition Everest. I love this ride. I never got to experience it with a fully functioning yeti, so I can only imagine how much more awesome it would be. We went on twice, and walked on both times. After EE it was safari (one of Tammy’s favourites). It was really good. The lions were quite active this time (which made me wish I had my better camera). It was really funny to watch. There were two female lions and one male. The one female was at the very top of the rock formation and every time the male lion tried to get up there, she would swat him in the head…”They’re so much like us”.
20130918_150027.jpg

After this, the kids wanted to do Everest again (yeah…the “kids” wanted to do it again). So we head back to Asia, and rode Everest 3 more times (the kids each wanted to do one ride alone, and one together). Fun times. We decided to call it a day for the park, and headed back to the hotel to freshen up for dinner. Dinner tonight was ‘Ohana – a first night tradition for us.
IMG_9073.JPG

I had purposely booked the meal for a bit later (6:50) so we could watch Wishes from our table. We requested a window seat, and were in woodfired meat heaven in no time.

We tried Boma for the first time in June and it was fabulous. Glad the rain stopped for you!
We really do love Boma, but it is also one of the pricier buffets on property and we just don't eat enough to make it worthwhile (especially with Steph just basically eating macaroni and bread). Having said that, it is still one of the best buffets on property.

Thanks. It's Thanksgiving weekend in Canada this weekend, so I'm hoping I can get through a few more days before the weekend ends. September is a great time to go, although I think that the years of offering free dining have done what they are supposed to do, as it was a lot busier than usual. We're thinking of going at the end of August next year (school doesn't start until September up here in the great white north). But, like you said, a busy day at Disney is better than no Disney at all.

It was pretty pricey. We wanted to be adventurous and try some new exotic foods. My daughter picked it for her 16th birthday dinner.

Day 7 - Sept 24
So here we are on Tuesday. Hard to believe that we’ve been here 7 days already. I’m starting to get that “it’s almost over” feeling, but we still have 4 days of fun to go. You know the drill by now…coffee. Today’s plan was supposed to be Blizzard Beach, but the skies were looking “iffy”. It was kind of raining/drizzling when we woke up, so we weren’t sure what we should do. However, since we were supposed to be meeting friends there, we decided we’d at least show up there and then decide from there what we wanted to do. Let me tell you….best decision ever (especially if you like waterslides). I think between the cloudy day and it being mid-week, there was almost no one there. Summit Plummit never had a line-up the entire day (actually no slides did). Here goes…

SANY0031.JPG

We got to Blizzard Beach a few minutes before park opening, and it was still pretty cloudy. We went and got a small locker again, and made it to the main area just in time to see whoever was selected to do the “first ride” of the day go down Summit Plummit. We quickly went down to the wave pool and got some chairs, and decided we’d get on Summit Plummit before the lines got too long (our friends weren’t there yet, but they have two small children so it’s not always the easiest thing to get places early).

The view from our chairs today
SANY0032.JPG

So the kids and I grabbed a chairlift up Mount Gushmore,
SANY0034.JPG

and were back down at around 60MPH.
SANY0038.JPG

We went back to see Tammy, and decided since the lines were so short we’d ride it “one last time” before the lines got long. While waiting for the chairlift our friends showed up, so we all went up together and rode again.
SANY0033.JPG

Let’s skip to the summary of Summit Plummit….I ended up riding it 5 times, Liam and Steph each rode 7. I don’t think the human body is meant to take that kind of abuse. I got a picture the next day of our friend’s lower back (he rode around 6-7 times too), and it was bruised all over. Crazy.
Basically, we had the park to ourselves the whole day. We rode Teamboat Springs 4 times,
SANY0035.JPG
SANY0037.JPG

Here we go
SANY0039.JPG

I'm glad Tammy is feeling better
SANY0043.JPG

Slush Gusher a few times, and pretty much whatever we wanted to do, with no wait at all. The downside is that I’m getting way too old for that. I need lines to give me a rest between slides.

Day 7 continued

For lunch Tammy and Liam went to Alotawata again. Liam got the Holiday Sandwich and Tammy got the Chicken Caesar salad.
SANY0054.JPG

Both were good apparently. Steph and I went to Avalunch.
SANY0050.JPG

Steph got the Mac and Cheese dog
SANY0052.JPG

and I got the pulled pork and slaw dog.
SANY0053.JPG

Both were good also.
Just after lunch the sun finally broke through (around 1). I expected the parks to get busy after that, but I guess since the parks are only open to 5 people figure it’s not really worth the money for a few hours, so the park stayed empty. My back was killing me now (from the repeated trips down Summit Plummit), so I took it easy the rest of the day.
SANY0064.JPG

We played in the wave pool, and the kids went on a few slides by themselves.

SANY0059.JPG

We hung around the park until around 4, and then called it a day.

Day 7 continued

We headed back to AKL to get ready for dinner. Actually, the first thing I did was cancel our Chef Mickey’s reservation for tomorrow (we decided we’d try Beaches and Cream or see what’s available tomorrow). We just couldn’t do another buffet. Having said that, our dinner tonight was at Whispering Canyon (so, basically, we’re OK if the buffet is brought to us? – Nah, we just hadn’t been to Whispering Canyon in a few years and wanted to try it again).
IMG_9678.JPG

We got the bus to MK, and then the boat to Wilderness Lodge. Wilderness Lodge, like AKL, has a stunning lobby.
IMG_9680.JPG

We’re seriously considering staying here when we come back. We checked it at the desk, and were seated in no time. Our server (and I totally forget his name) was fantastic, and made the experience even better. We decided we’d all get the platter (the food doesn’t come in a skillet any more), and the kids got the all-you-can-drink milkshakes.
IMG_9681.JPG

IMG_9684.JPG

The food was OK, but not great. The chicken was good, the ribs were pretty good too, but the brisket was kind of fatty. The dessert sampler was good too.
IMG_9689.JPG

The cheesecake in a jar was my favourite, and Tammy liked the cobbler (the kids didn’t really have dessert since they were so full from the shakes).
Liam even did the "horse" races
IMG_9687.JPG

After dinner we wandered the resort for a bit.
IMG_9692.JPG

IMG_9694.JPG

We went down and checked out the DVC Villas, and hung out in the lounge over there.
IMG_9698.JPG

IMG_9700.JPG

Now the plan was to go to the Top of the World lounge tonight to see Hallowishes, but when we exited the DVC wing of WL, it was pouring. We figured the fireworks would be cancelled, so we just headed back to AKL (and, of course, by the time we got back the rain had stopped and the clouds had cleared- bah – it’s looking more like the TotW lounge will have to go on next year’s to-do list). However, we were pretty exhausted from a full day at the waterparks, and were asleep in no time. Tomorrow’s plan is EPCOT.

Isn't it nice to have a to do list for next year?

Blizzard Beach looks like it was an awesome time!

It's always nice to have things you haven't done yet when you go back.

Blizzard Beach is fantastic. We all had so much fun there. We're talking about giving Typhoon Lagoon another chance when we go back, but we'll see.

I remember the rain on the 23rd, wow did it come down we called a taxi to get us from where we had lunch, between running out of the door and reaching the taxi all of 15ft away we looked like we had been at blizzard beach too! We were staying at OKW and had a veiw of one of the lakes from our balacany after a couple of hours the lake had started to flood the golf course! It was nice to stay in the villa and chill out with a DVD though for a change! Really enjoying your TR looking forward to reading the rest!

The rain that day was crazy. It rained one day like that last year too when we were at AK, but we took shelter and waited for it to pass so we didn't get that wet. However, this year we didn't feel like standing under a covered bridge for an hour hoping that it would stop (which it wouldn't have anyways), but we were all just soaked at the end.

What did you think of OKW? OKW makes our trip report shortly (we wanted to see what it was like so we took the bus "tour" of it). Would you recommend it?

Hoping to complete another day or two today. This is taking a lot longer than I thought it would.

Day 8 - Sept 25
So Day 8 is upon us. Still finding it hard to believe how fast this trip seems to be going by. Having said that, I don’t feel the usual “sadness” that comes near the end of our trips. Not to mention we still have 2.5 days left…so let’s get started.
We were all still pretty tired (the 7 days of walking have caught up with us), so we slept in a bit. Woke up…coffee…out the door. Today was another trip to EPCOT…but not without some transportation issues. We went down to the busses and waited…and waited…and waited…after about 4 MK busses, we decided our best bet may be to take the MK bus and then hop the monorail over to EPCOT, so we did.
IMG_9703.JPG

The bus ride to MK was fine, and when we got there a monorail was waiting….score….or so we thought….turns out the monorail was waiting because of problems on the line…we waited another 15 minutes in the monorail before it started moving. All in all, it took about 1 hour to get from AKL to the front gate of EPCOT. No big deal. I wait in 1 hour of traffic pretty much every day, and this sure beats that.
IMG_9706.JPG

EPCOT was really busy today. Not busy-season busy, but busier than normal. We walked by Spaceship Earth, and saw it had a 15 minute wait. I’ve never seen a 15 minute wait for Spaceship Earth in September. I mean come-on, it’s an omni-mover. We passed. We headed over to get fastpasses for Test Track, and got a return time of 4:30 (it was around 11:30 right now). Since we were so close, Liam and I went on Mission Space (orange side),

and Steph and Tammy went looking around the Mission Space store.

Day 8 continued
After our trip to Mars the kids were starting to get hungry, so we decided we’d try our 3-trips-in-the-making idea of “eating around the world” (i.e. we’d go to a few countries and try the food from each). The one thing about this idea is that it fails if someone in the party is a picky eater who only wants one thing….Looking at you Steph…Steph decided she only wanted nachos…nothing else…so our idea of eating around the world quickly became “eating at Mexico and Japan”. Steph got her nachos first (we got them to go)
IMG_9724.JPG

and then the rest of us headed over to the Katsura Grill in Japan. Tammy and I got teriyaki chicken, and Liam got teriyaki beef.
IMG_9729.JPG

IMG_9730.JPG

It was pretty good. The whole are up by the Katsura Grill is very nice and relaxing.
IMG_9277.JPG

After lunch we decided we’d wander world showcase for a while. We went to America first. The kids got a funnel cake, and really liked it.
IMG_9732.JPG

IMG_9737.JPG

We then went in to the American pavilion. I had heard the American Adventure on Subsonic Radio (Subsonic radio is an on-line station that plays only Disney theme park music (both back-ground music and attraction soundtracks)), and I wanted to see the actual presentation. The pre-show consisted of the Voices of Liberty singing some American standards.
IMG_9744.JPG

They were really good. After they finished singing we headed in to the American Adventure. The theatre was only about 1/3 full, so there was no fighting for seats. I found the show to be entertaining and educational.
After the American Adventure, we continued wandering World Showcase. We stopped in China for a few minutes, and also wandered through Norway and Mexico.

Thought process: "grab the camera...open mouth wide...take picture..." another Liam selfie
IMG_9769.JPG

So we had some time to kill before our fastpasses, and really didn't have much else we really wanted to do at EPCOT today (other than the kids went on Sum of All Thrills), so we decided we'd go check out another resort to see if it looked like somewhere we'd like to stay in the future. We decided to check out Old Key West. We boarded a bus, sat back, and enjoyed a tour of OKW. OKW is huge, and has a similar layout to Saratoga Springs. There are five bus stops in the resort and a golf course surrounds it. I'm not sure about OKW as a place we'd like to stay. It seems a bit to sprawling for our taste. We'll see I guess.

We didn't get off the bus at OKW and ended up back at EPCOT right around 4:30, so we headed back to Test Track. When we got there the line was right out the door. “Good thing we got fastpasses” I thought to myself, until I realized the fastpass line was out the door too. Turns out there was some major malfunction on the ride, and it had been down for quite a while, and it didn’t sound like it would be starting any time soon. We waited in line about 15 minutes and then bailed. We asked the CM at the front if we could come back any time during the day to use the FP, and were told we could (we never did, so we have paper copies of the FP for Test Track to hold on to for posterity).
IMG_9774.JPG

So it was 5 now, and we decided we’d try Beaches and Cream for dinner. We walked back through World Showcase, past England, and were at Beach Club before we knew it. We walked up to Beaches and Cream and asked if there were any spots available any time soon (in case you didn’t know, you can't make ADR’s for Beaches and Cream, so everything is walk-up). We were told they could take us right away which was great. Beaches and Cream is another one of those good values on property (i.e. lots of food and it’s relatively cheap). For dinner, Tammy got the Turkey BLT,
IMG_9779.JPG

Steph got the grilled cheese,
IMG_9780.JPG

and Liam and I got burgers.
IMG_9778.JPG

All were good. For dessert, we shared the Mudslide Sundae
IMG_9781.JPG

and the Grilled Banana Bread and Peanut Butter (we made the mistake a few years ago of each getting a sundae, and actually left about 1.5 of them).
IMG_9782.JPG

The kids and I love ice cream, and Tammy loves banana bread, so we were all happy with dessert.
After dessert we decided we’d head to Downtown Disney and do some shopping (the kid had saved all the money they earned during the year to spend on the trip, and they had ideas of what they wanted).

The first stop was World of Disney, where Steph got a Chewbacca back-pack and a Dumbo stuffed animal.

She really loves her backpack
IMG_9850.JPG

Liam got a Duffy with pajamas.
IMG_0029.JPG

Tammy and I ended up just getting gifts for people at home. We spent a few more minutes wandering around DTD, and then headed back to AKL.
IMG_9796.JPG

We dropped our purchases off at the room, got changed, and headed down to the pool (with a quick stop to fill our mugs). They were showing Cinderella by the pool tonight, so we sat in the hot tub and watched it for a few minutes.
IMG_9970.JPG

I also took some night pictures of the pool area.

We called it a night after that. Still find it hard to believe that tomorrow is our last full day here.

Hoping to complete another day or two today. This is taking a lot longer than I thought it would.

It was the 1st time I have stayed in a Disney resort and it was really nice, we had a 1 bedroom villa and the place was huge! The whole resort was huge and a little too big for my liking, you do have to get the bus everywhere round the resort, we were on the QS dining plan and found 'Goods to Go' a bit dull, cheese burger, chicken nuggets, tuna sandwich ect basics really I know there is another small QS the 'Turtle Shack' (or something like that) which we never found but I believe has very limited opening hours, so more food choice and places would have been nice I didn't like the idea that if I wanted a snack I had a 20 min walk (each way) or wait for a bus, snacks to me are a 10 min thing not the best part of an hour because the place is so big with limited food outlets. the villa itself was really nice and like I said huge! it was well clean and very comfortable, it was lovely to have a full kitchen we got some groceries delivered from Garden Grocer (great service), breakfast items, snacks, coffee and beers (very expensive at the hotel shop) ect, so the kitchen was great, although the TV being in the 'island' in the kitchen was a little far away from the sofa's and a bit low but that is a personal viewing choice for us! Even though we had a connecting villa in the whole 2 weeks we only ever heard 1 little bit of noise from next door so 'thin' walls are not a problem and the view from our balcony was lovely (we were on the 3rd floor) really peaceful to enjoy a quiet coffee in the morning or a glass of wine in the evening. I can't comment on the pools as we never made it to them (having far too much fun in the parks) but walking past they did look nice. The bus service was really good we never waited long I would say max 10 mins and we only ever had 1 bus that was full but it was very quiet being September.

All in all I would stay at OKW again but I would also like to try a smaller resort with Disney theming, I have seen so many pictures of the likes of All stars and AOA ect which are full of theming were as OKW being themed on the real OKW did miss the Disney feel, I could have been in any villa in Florida.

if there is anything you would like me to go into further detail on let me know I will be happy to try and answer any questions you have x

Thanks Gurt. We thought it looked very spread out also (it has a similar layout to Saratoga Springs). I think we'll stick with one of the other resorts instead.

Day 9 - Sept 25
So our last full day is here. Had a horrible sleep last night. I think I caught a mild version of whatever Tammy had. I woke up, made coffee, and the headed to the front door…maybe it won’t be there….maybe it isn’t the last day…nope….the dreaded Magical Express envelope was hanging on the door. I brought it in and tried to find some matches to burn it, but to no avail. I guess we are going home tomorrow. But that’s tomorrow. We still have a full day left and we weren’t going to waste it. Our plan was to get to the MK for rope drop, but some bus issues meant we didn’t get there until around 9:15.
One kind of cool thing happened when we got to MK. We went through bag check and a CM was standing just outside of them telling anyone interested in using the old turnstiles one last time to go around the construction walls they have up. Apparently today was the last day for the turnstiles before the construction walls go around them and they are gone forever. We couldn’t turn this down as going through the turnstiles was always kind of a fun experience, so we headed around the construction walls, fed our cards through the reader, did the finger scan, and walked through the turnstiles for the last time.

The “clunk” sound is so satisfying.

The MK wasn’t too busy today which was nice.

OK, so it looks pretty busy from this picture, but trust me, it wasn't.

We decided to follow some advice we had heard/read and went left through Adventureland instead of right to Tomorrowland. That was a pretty good call. We got on Pirates, Splash and BTMR fairly quickly (we got fastpasses for BTMR just to have them, but actually did the standby line).

I love the little attention to detail things Disney puts into their rides - they didn't need to put map of the various mine shafts around Thunder Mesa, but there it was. It just adds to the story

We also did HM one last time and also picked up fastpasses for Pooh (and also got bonus fastpasses for Philharmagic (that we didn’t use)).
