A sort of comparison that always comes to my mind is prescription medications. New Prescription medications are prescribed to millions of people every day. A small percentage of the people that take these medications will have horribly adverse reactions to them. Some could die, have strokes, heart attacks, develop cancer, etc. But that doesn’t stop them from being prescribed by health professionals everywhere by the millions day in and day out.

Great analogy!

A few weeks ago at a dinner party, one of the guests equated this to the Cold War and how all cities had fallout shelters and we were all convinced we were going to die. No one under age 50 would understand or remember that, but that tells you the types of Old-As-The-Hills dinner parties I go to!

But for those who are over age 50, you remember. We were all going to die a fiery horrible death in a nuclear war. It wasn't if, it was when. We practiced attack drills in the schools. We had basement bunkers ready with water and canned food and a transistor radio. We had pamphlets that told us how to stack mattresses and luggage full of old clothes against the door to give us needed mass to keep the radiation out in the first 72 hours after the attack. But it was the survivors who would have it worse, because then Nuclear Winter would set in and we'd starve to death three months later. "Experts" like Carl Sagan told us it wasn't if, it was only a matter of when.

It never happened, thank God, and the evil Socialist regimes in Russia and Eastern Europe collapsed more suddenly than anyone ever could have imagined in 1989 and 1990.

But this current age of Covid Fear feels a lot like 1982 or 1962. We're all going to die, we just know it! Right? Or not.

Aloha,

Sorry but I called it out at least twice but each time my post got deleted.
Sorry, but the Election shouldn't play a part in this! In fact, Speaking of the Election, would Biden close all the parks again??? And for how long???? Gav Gav doesn't seem concerned about DLR, so would Biden have the same attitude? I'm just asking, trying to be as nice as I can be!

Wow! This is becoming so fascinating to watch! Disney is really pushing back against Sacramento and the daily word soup they belch up. (Today's Trendy HR Word From Sacramento Is: Dialectic)

There really is no precedence for this. A year ago it would have been all sweetness and light between Disney and anyone in Sacramento. No longer.

Gavin Newsom is clearly losing his grip on this argument. I will be interested to see how, and when, he responds.

There's been more shots fired during the last couple of weeks then all the cannons contained within 'Pirates of the Carribean'.

That's a perfect analogy. We're now on the verge of open warfare between The Walt Disney Company and the current government of the State of California.

Elon Musk already said a couple months ago he's moving his California factory to Nevada. Disneyland doesn't have that luxury, but this is about as close as we come to seeing it happen.

I actually think regardless of who wins it’s likely the parks are going to reopen likely in the early New Year.

Recognizing this isn’t in the politics thread... I’ll just say that this situation is untenable, and Newsome is benefitting from having a lot of major National political players not being focused on this while he and Disney/Iger have this (very public) *wizzing* contest.

(*Note I’m editing to use the word wizzing since this is a site approved phrase 😉*)

A little late to the party today, but here are a couple more relevant quotes from the past day:

Per TPI from Dr. Mark Ghaly on issuing park guidelines:

"I am not sure when those conversations wrap up. I will tell you that they will wrap up as soon as we come to really hear the industry and understand some of the concerns."

and another fun one per Deadline on the tiers:

"When asked what comes after yellow, Ghaly referenced Newsom’s comment on Monday that these tiers would not be replaced until the end of the year."

Plenty of time to debate chartreuse vs. olive!

What other large business category is still closed in California?

Bars, at least they have guidelines of how and when they can open.

Sports Venues, at least they can host games.

Movie Theaters have guidelines.

Live Entertainment. The closest I can come up with. TV and Movie production is allowed. But how many employees and revenue impact does it have (not counting Movie and TV) compared to Theme/Amusement parks?

Right?!! The fact they signed this from the Chief Medical Officer? That’s as serious a response as I think they do (at least so far). And absolutely necessary because while trying to defend how stubborn for health he is, Newsom slammed every other theme park that is open as unsafe... As if Disney isn’t mad enough now Newsom is going after their anemic WDW business? ... well that got awkward quick 🤣

This is just absolutely ridiculous. And we pay these people and they work for us!

And Sacramento is going to roll out the fourth (4th!) version of a tracking system by Christmas? Why? They already tweaked the 3rd system by adding the Racial Equity Metric this week to the Four-Tier Blueprint For A Safer Economy. So now it's Four-Tier Blueprint For A Safer Economy 2.0 With Racial Equity, but that's not good enough?

And Disneyland is still closed. Also schools.

The reason for this “shift” might have something to do with the fact that California is going to need to go to Congress and make a plea for money as part of a future COVID relief package.

Even in a “best case scenario” and an infusion of financial/life support I’d bet even pressure will come from the more astute political leaders from the state of California including Leader Pelosi, the California House delegation, and a possibly a new VP-elect. I’m sure they’re undoubtedly going to feel pressure from several large CA-based companies to see to it that the state begin a truly robust, and dare I say “dynamic”, discussion about responsibly reopening the state’s economy.

As I remember, because the name is familiar, Dr. Hymel was the person Disney rolled out in 2015 to help explain the Measles outbreak at Disneyland due to all the kids who are no longer vaccinated in this country because Dr. Jenny McCarthy told 40 million Millennials not to vaccinate their children.

Dr. Jenny McCarthy also hosted a dating game show on MTV called Singled Out, but it's her tireless work in epidemiology that really deserves the credit.
