From Oak Ridge (Jefferson) in Morris County. Originally from West Milford (right next door) in Passaic County. Live very close to a member from here....

As for the Carousel, not all the horses are original though. They rescued what they could and recreated the rest.

NJ was known for it's amusements at the turn of the last Century which today people don't realize.

I just read the book "Close to Shore" which was about the 1916 shark attacks off the Jersey coast that started a world wide panic. The panic was so great it pushed news of World War I back a few pages so it could take center stage.

In the book it mentions several neat NJ facts, one of which is that Atlantic City had the first boardwalk in the world.

Another was that the President of the USA use to spend the summer in Asbury Park and had an office there rather than work out of DC.

The Jersey shore was where all the famous beautiful people went during the summer.

Anyway, neat book that gives a lot of neat history on NJ. Highly recommend it. :)

It really covers quite a bit of detail on NJ which is kind of neat. I am facinated (and terrified of) with sharks. The story of these attacks makes Jaws seem almost tame.

For those who don't know, in 1916 5 people were attacked (4 killed) by a shark or sharks off the coast of NJ over the course of 12 days in July. First person was in Beach Haven, second in Spring Lake and the last 2 in Mattawan. One of the Mattawan people survived, the rest all died.

The shark that was responsible for at least some of the deaths if not all was caught and killed by a fisherman in a small motor boat in Raritan Bay by beating it to death with an oar handle after it got caught in his net and then proceeded to climb into his boat to try to eat him and his fishing buddy.

Peter Benchley wrote Jaws based on these events.

Scary, scary stuff.....

Is Island Beach the same as Island Beach State Park?

YES, Jaws was based on the NJ shark attacks. There was another event (not sure if it is synonymous with those attacks) that happened a number of years back. That is how Shark River got its name. Scary.

And, yes, Island Beach State Park was what I was referring to, which is my backyard. I'm a lucky duck.
