YES, Jaws was based on the NJ shark attacks. There was another event (not sure if it is synonymous with those attacks) that happened a number of years back. That is how Shark River got its name. Scary.

And, yes, Island Beach State Park was what I was referring to, which is my backyard. I'm a lucky duck.

Don't think it is though 3 of the people who were attacked (two of which died) were attacked in the Mattawan Creek.

Island Beach State Park is beautiful. Have not been in years but really like it. If we spend anytime at the beach it is usually on LBI in the fall. Cooler weather, less crowds and 1/3 the price.

You are a lucky duck...

Is Island Beach the same as Island Beach State Park?

Yes they are one in the same, as for the shark attacks, not all of them happened in the ocean, some actually happened in salty canals, in shallow water, which made it easy for the shark. I believe they said it was a bull shark which is known to go after humans.
Ok for those who think they may know, what is the one important fact of rowan college, before, when it was called glassboro state college? Hint is, it made world news.
Anybody have an idea of when and where we can get together for a meet?:)

I just checked on why it is called Shark River. This is what I found:

Why is it called the Shark River?

I have dived this inlet many times, and have never seen even a small shark, although I have been told that they can be seen on occasion from high up on the bridge. Apparently, in the late 1800's a large shark was swept upstream into the bay, where it died. Or the river could be named after the fossilized shark teeth that can be sifted from the sand upstream in Shark River Park. The original Indian name for the river was Nollectquest, the actual meaning of which has been lost to time.

Yep, only two happened in the ocean, the last three were in the Mattawan Creek. There are disputes over weather it was a bull shark or great white or more than one shark. The book I read is basing it on one shark (a great white) that was captured and had human bones in the stomach. I just started another one where they think it is a bull shark. Either way, scary and interesting.

Until after the 2nd attack even the people who witnessed the first said it could not be a shark as everyone thought sharks were cowardly and that they would not be able to bite through human bones. It was blamed on everything from a swordfish to a giant sea turtle to an orca.

I have several ideas for the meet idea. First off we should try to do three meets, one more northern, one central and one southern I would think no??
For the Northern one I propose Sweet Maggie's pub in the Rockaway Mall on 9/9/05. One of my friends who is also into Disney is going to be singing with her band that night from 7:30 to 10:30. They serve food, drinks, etc. Any thoughts on this one??
For the Central Meet, perhaps one of the restaurants such as Ruby Tuesdays, Longhorns etc in the Woodbridge area??
For the Southern Meet I Am not as familiar with South Jersey so I Am gonna need some help here!!! Hey Don any thoughts?? Belle

It is about 1 hour from me, but it isnt like I havent done it before. Debbie's band is actually quite good, very acoustic and kind of low key so it wont interfere with our Disney chatting!!! Belle

How do you know who you're looking for when you go to a meet? I've never been to one before, and I really don't know anyone on these boards. But I really want to go...

 <-- I think that might be my fave smiley

Well in the case of the North Jersey one I can arrange to be at one of the doors to the bar, either the one leading in from outside or the one coming in from the Mall and have a name tag or a WDWMagic Shirt on or something to that effect!!!! I know that area well enough to be able to do that.
Central and South Jersey people speak up and help me out here!!! I am not as familiar with clubs in these areas so I need a bit more input!!! Belle

You're right, it was Mattawan Creek, although SurfsupDon is right that is was the basis for Jaws, not Mass. Islands. Benchley lives in Princeton (Hopewell before he made his money) and based it on the NJ stories.

:) well, for one thing we need to see if people want to meet, then decide a central place that doesn't take long for most to get to. Then a date, but to talk Disney I really don't think too many will have a problem with how far. On another note, I had seen that TT has NJ in it, well so does MK, does anyone from NJ, (please let's see if anyone from NJ knows this), what it could be?

Also in AK (Hester and Chesters) there is a hedge spelling DINOLAND that is framed in license plates, and of course NJ is represented...I'll try to find a picture...

I know it was the basis for Jaws, I had said that. Not sure what Mass. Islands even is or what you mean by that.

The book Jaws if I remember might even mention the 1916 attacks in NJ but I read it a long time ago so I can't be sure. I do remember though that in the book Jaws it was almost a tourist attraction for people to come see if they could spot the shark. There was someone on the beach in the book who said they were going to go to Jungle Habitat in NJ but decided to go to see the shark on L.I. instead. Jungle Habitat was in the town I grew up in (West Milford) and was run by Warner Bros. For me, it was neat to see that mentioned....
