More WDI Layoffs Planned?

It's technology AND art that makes the best films, but neither works without a story. The Lion King used computer technology, but the hand-drawn 2-d art that it used was stunning. And all of it really worked beyond opening weekend -- all the way to Broadway -- because it had a compelling story.

Great art, well executed, makes the movie, computers or not.

And if you need proof that CGI alone is not the answer, just look at this week's returns for "Valient".... Perhaps itself a good story (don't know), but CGI and "from the makers of 'Shrek'" did not sell it....

Disney movies AND theme parks and resorts have something unique that goes beyond technology. And too much outsourcing, at the cost of seasoned Disney professionals who understand that, will cost the company the culture and product that makes it unique, as seguels and cheap stuff have already started to do.

Some outsourcing is O.K., but loyalty and ownership of the product go a long way in supporting investments that matter... and innovation that fits and enhances the company's legacy.

I could not have said it better myself! :sohappy:  :D

You are a MORON. I'm sorry I said that, but that was really the last straw. You're the cry baby because you're being so rude. Atleast I tried to talk to you in a civilized manner ( with the exception of the moron comment, lol ) All I said was that Grizz was my choice for CEO, yet you treated the comment as if I said something really offensive. No need to be so rude about it. Sheesh!

I am feeling so hurt right now....I just don't know if I can continue to live

(if you make a dumb comment, you get a dumb answer)

You have reached the Suicide Prevention Hotline. All our lines are busy now, but if you leave your name and number, someone will get back to you as soon as possible.

That's it. I've completely lost all respect for you. You always seemed like a nice member, but in this thread, its apparent that you're a real jerk. Get a life.

Since it still entertains. Trust me, if you put Pixar to work on 2-D films, the box-office successes would clear any doubt.

This is an incredibly naive attitude. The large appeal of Pixar is its technology combined with an entertaining story. Its not all or nothing, its both Grizzle Fashizzle.

2D animation films aren't made because they've become almost irrelevant and or boring. Just like how its a waste these days to buy a film camera, a majority of people will trade in for the newer technology -- digital. Are you using a punchcard to access your files on your computer? No, its most likely through RAM and a hard disk.

So let me guess Grizzle, your next t.v. is going to be a b and white tube because hey, it tells the same great stories? No, you will eventually want the next innovative technologies (even if you are the last to adopt them which sounds like you would) such as LCD, Plasma and super thin rear projection.

See the forrest for the trees -- innovation is part of what makes entertainment entertaining. Do you prefer board games over video games too?

Luddite.

All excellent points and I liked the way you said it as well! Eisner used the black & white vs. color example. I liked your digital camera vs. film example! That really hits home for a lot of people.

Then why are anime movies so popular?

Wha????

They are not popular.....some series have a cult following by certain individuals with very pale skin and dark clothing, but NO anime film has EVER made a significant amount of money.

Popular? How?

How many anime films are in the top 100 grossing films of all time? I don't see one. Top 1000? A handful? Businessweek reports that maybe 10% of anime films are profitable. Sounds fringe to me.

Besides, if you have trained eyes, you'll realize how computers are used to assist the artists in background, inking, etc. Anime is an interesting blend of man and machine.

Anime almost proves my point. Its a modest 5 billion dollar economy in Japan, but it is a blend, a bit of old and new (which I'm all for). Perhaps thats why Anime still survives and traditional Disney animation is dying. Anime was more willing to infuse Computer help (beyond inking and scanning).

I had to come out and add to this thread. Wow, I've never seen so many crazy people in one place at one time. Grizz is the only one on this thread with good information and half of you nit wits jump all over him.

Grizz says they are laying off Imagineers, and then you guys say not real imagineers, just low level guys. Then Grizz points out Bruce Gordon was laid off and you all come up with crazy reasons, like he wanted to go, or he had other problems, or he's too old. He's not even 55! You people just wont accept the fact that Grizz has good info because it's not what you want to hear. When Tim Delany is laid off in three weeks will you believe Grizz then?

Speck, Woody, etc. all you want is for everyone to say the Walt Disney Company is great and wonderful and perfect...and you attack anyone who says otherwise. All you sad foolish little people just keep on patting each other on the back and reinforcing each other's dillusions. I leave you now to go back to your pathetic lives.

You claim we are "blindly" supporting the company, but at the same time, you are blindly bashing their actions (and none of us have the full story)....I have never seen a company lay-off people for no reason whatsoever. If WDI felt that Bruce was of future value to them, he would probably still have a job....obviously, they feel otherwise.

 I can't believe that Delany would be laid off! Gordon was bad enough! This is not good...

Corrus doesn't have good information?

I like Grizz fine, and he is certainly a passionate person and fun to chat with, but in matters like these, I take everything he says with a grain of salt. That's not because I don't trust him, but because he runs a little dramatic for me. So I always say to myself, OK, if Grizz says it's a 10, it's more likely a 5 or a 6.

I am sorry for anyone let go who is not ready to leave. But personally I have known dozens of people in the same situation. I feel less sad for a top engineer who will be getting a decent pay and benefit package than for the many people I have seen let go who need to then find new jobs at 50 years old because they need a means to pay their bills.

If Corrus says the company is OK, I am going to believe him, not because I want to spite Grizz, but because as an employee and therefore an insider, I give more weight to his information and his perspective.
