Lessons Learned by a First Time Cruiser: Kids, Shuffleboard and Runners Don't Mix!

Hi Everyone! We just got back from a fantastic cruise aboard the Disney Magic. Now, like most everyone else that takes a Disney cruise, I am hooked! There were a couple things that didn't go exactly as planned, but we still had a great time and can't wait to do another. Unfortunately with the Disney Marathon next year, a trip to Disney next summer with my niece and possibly the Disneyland Half in 2013, I think another cruise will have to wait till 2014. Maybe prices will come down on the Fantasy by then! So without further delay...on with the trip report! :sohappy:

Oh wow! Love it! Great pics! Lumieres looks great. But whyyyyy are they still using the tired old bedspreads?!?! I know my old man is gonna hate me for it but I'm seriously going to be bringing either my Minnie quilt or an older comforter or something to put over that. Not kidding. Ugh!

Soakin it up when I can. I'm a sewing fool.....

Do it Kelly! Then your survey card can say that the bedding was so old and tired that you had to bring your own! :D Maybe that will light a fire under them!

I'm so glad it didn't rain for your party, Kristi!! Dinner looked delicious!

Our bedspread seemed to be in ok shape. I didn't really notice it since I hadn't been on the cruise before. It did seem a little lightweight though. Our room seemed really cold. We had the thermostat set as high as it would go but it didn't make much of a difference. We pulled the extra blanket out of the cabinet and slept in sweats!

I'm spoiled, I know. Bedspreads vs. quilts and/or duvets are a huuuuge pet peeve of mine. Seriously. The Dream has beautiful white duvets with colorful throws at the foot of the bed. Reminded me a lot of the beds at the Yacht Club. I realize the Dream is brand new but how hard is it to swap bedspreads for comforters with duvets? I know....I need to get over it. Lol!

For returning to cooking I highly recommend skinnytaste.com. Awesome stuff there and it's healthy. I made the pulled pork BBQ and Kansas City BBQ sauce over the weekend. Biiiig hits! And both were super easy, make great leftovers, and the BBQ sauce also goes well with the healthy chicken nuggets. Made those last night. Took a total of 1/2 an hour. Fabulosity!

I will have to check that out! Thanks! Sounds really yummy. We are always looking for healthy quick stuff to make.

After dinner, we went back to our room to digest a bit. I think I fell asleep for a little while. Dan wanted to go see John Carter which was playing in the Buena Vista Theater at 10:45. That is usually past our bedtime and I was soooo tired and would have been fine with staying in bed. Somehow, I was able to drag myself to the theater. By the time we walked over, I was a little more awake. It was kind of a weird confusing movie. Much more Dan's speed movie as it was science fiction. I was able to stay awake for it, so I guess it wasn't too bad :) After the movie it was bedtime! Key West tomorrow!

Overnight we had some really spectacular thunder and lightning shows. The boat wasn't too rough though which was good.

When we got up, the weather was still kind of rainy and yucky. We were able to sleep in a bit since we were not due into Key West until 12:30 pm. We got up around 9 and headed up to Topsiders for breakfast. It was really easy to get there since our cabin in the rear of the ship 2 floors below Topsiders. Just a couple flights of stairs and we were there. Also very close to the drink station!

While we were eating breakfast, the captain broke in with an announcement. Utoh.....this couldn't be good. Key West was experiencing very bad weather with 50 mph winds and it was unsafe to take the ship into port. We were going to have an extra day at sea today. I was pretty disappointed because I was REALLY looking forward to Key West. Oh well, a day at sea is good too. Unfortunately the weather was not so pretty at sea too, so there would be no lounging in the sun for us today.

At 10:30 am, they were going to be playing Jackpot Bingo, so we decided that might be fun.

While waiting, we went over to Sessions which is a piano bar by night. They have really comfy chairs in there next to the huge portholes. We went in to relax. We figured our room steward, Herman, would be making up the room so we didn't want to disturb him.

Bingo was in Rock-N-Bar D. It was $30 for 6 cards for 4 games. We also each got a free game card good only for this first day of bingo. Neither of us won, but it was fun!

Rock-N-Bar D and Sessions are in the Beat Street section. There is also Diversions which is a sports bar.

After Bingo, we went back to the room. We went out on the balcony to survey the scenery which was mostly just gray and ocean. This was about the time we found out that we were staying next to chain smokers. Everytime we went out on the balcony they were smoking. It was pretty nasty. We were downwind from them also, so it always blew towards our cabin. When the room was cold we tried to leave our balcony door open for a little while but then the whole room smelled like smoke. The other problem with the balcony came from all the rain. Since the bottom is enclosed the water just sat on the floor and didn't dry up till the last night we were there. There was probably about an inch of water in places on the verandah. Everytime I went out, I felt like I was tracking a ton of water back in and leaving the carpet all wet. The smoking though was worse than the water. It was tough to enjoy the verandah with that.

We watched Apollo 18 in the room. That movie has something for both of us. Horror for me, science fiction for Dan!

After the movie, it was lunchtime! I had a wrap and fruit from Goofy's Galley. Dan had pizza from Pinnochio's. After lunch, Dan went back to the room for a nap and I decided to walk around the ship and take some pics and then take a nap! Here are some really random shots on the Disney Magic!

I am always looking for new recipes so I took a look at this website, it looks great. I have a very fussy 20 month old so I am constantly pulling out my hair to get him to eat so I love trying something new (especially when it is healthy). So today as I sit at my desk at work my little pork loin is cooking in the slow cooker at home....thanks for the tip. I'll let you know if Mr. Fussy Pants likes it :)

Sorry about hijacking this awesome trip report, I look forward to reading more. We are taking our son on his 1st Disney Cruise (thanks Tammy for all your help) so reading this report is getting me very, very excited !!!!

I do have the Navigator from that day. I will try to scan it tonight. Since it was decided in the morning not to go to port, they gave us a photocopy type addendum with new activities planned for the extra day at sea. For Key West, they just gave us a little shopping map which only included the shops right around the port. I am not sure if I still have that or not. It was kind of a bummer not to stop. We had planned to rent bikes and go to the butterfly garden, Hemmingway's house and maybe the Audubon house. So jealous you will be going soon :) Are you stopping in Key West too? Hopefully you will have better weather than we did!

Disappointing that you guys missed Key West, it is such a beautiful port but that is a really great excuse to plan another cruise :)

We are doing the 7-night Western Caribbean on the Fantasy at the end of September. We have done several Carnival cruises but this will be a completely new experience for us. I fear I will never be able to cruise anything else after we do Disney, I think I better start looking for a 2nd job :ROFLOL:

I heard ya'll missed Key West! I'm sorry, it's not fun to miss a port.

We wanted to see John Carter so bad on our last cruise! We didn't really want to pay for it in theaters and we knew it would be on the cruise, so that was perfect! But sadly the only time it didn't mess up something else in our schedule was at 10:45 at night and we never would have made it. I'm glad you stayed awake though!

It's too bad ya'll ended up next to smokers. It does make it hard to enjoy your balcony sometimes.

A question for someone who's never been. Is the ship nonsmoking, like the parks?

Looking forward to the rest of the report.

I think next time we want to try a Western or Eastern Carribean cruise. I don't know that I would even want to chance going on another cruise line! Disney was just so good!

I barely stayed awake for the movie! I never am up that late since I usually have to get up for work at 5:30 am. Next time I hope we don't have smokers next to us. Ugh.

Like the parks, there are certain outdoor areas that are for smokers. There is no smoking in the cabins, but you are allowed to smoke on your verandah if you have one.

Catching up on your trip report. Its making me want to book a cruise.:)

Great pics!

Thanks for reading Fractal! Book one! Book one! Lol! I need more cruise trip reports to read so we can decide which one to do next.
