Lessons Learned by a First Time Cruiser: Kids, Shuffleboard and Runners Don't Mix!

Hi Everyone! We just got back from a fantastic cruise aboard the Disney Magic. Now, like most everyone else that takes a Disney cruise, I am hooked! There were a couple things that didn't go exactly as planned, but we still had a great time and can't wait to do another. Unfortunately with the Disney Marathon next year, a trip to Disney next summer with my niece and possibly the Disneyland Half in 2013, I think another cruise will have to wait till 2014. Maybe prices will come down on the Fantasy by then! So without further delay...on with the trip report! :sohappy:

Was this one of the kid's clubs? Can't remember.

As one of the extra activities for the sea day, they had a chip and putt contest in the lobby.

It was finally time for a nap before the show tonight. I joined Dan who was already comatose and had a nice snooze. We woke up and changed for dinner and the show. At some point we noticed a message on the phone. George (who I think was the maitre de (sp?) ) was calling to let us know that they had found us a table for the early dinner service and they were looking forward to seeing us early. Huh? We never wanted to change our dinner time. Plus by the time we received the message it was already time for the first service. We decided to just go to our regular time.

DisneyCruise107.jpg

The show was Villians Tonight. I know a lot of people don't really care for the show, but I enjoyed it. I can see how people might not like it, but I found it entertaining. Certainly not the best show I saw of the cruise but enjoyable. Dan liked Villians Tonight the best of all the shows.

We went back to the room before dinner and this was what we found.

DisneyCruise109.jpg

Herman had made a Pluto to go with Dan's Pluto! Pluto is Dan's absolute favorite character of all time. We have so much Pluto stuff in our house :)
He was very excited to see a Pluto towel critter!

Tonight dinner was at...

DisneyCruise090-1.jpg

Dan had the wild mushroom risotto - loved it!

DisneyCruise114.jpg

I had the Sesame-flavored Rock Shrimp and Carmelized Onion Cheesecake.
This sounded a little out there too me but I wanted to try something different. I am so glad I did! It was so good. Kind of like a savory cheesecake more than a sweet one.

DisneyCruise117.jpg

Dan had the confetti tomato salad. Anyone who knows him, knows that he is nuts about tomatoes of any kind. Cooked, raw, salads, sauces, etc. He loves them all!

DisneyCruise118.jpg

I had the Potato and Cheddar Soup

DisneyCruise120.jpg

For entrees, Dan had the Penne Pasta with Julienne of Turkey Breast and Prosciutto. For both of our entree pics, we each took a bite before we remembered to take pics. Oops!

DisneyCruise123.jpg

I had the Phyllo Wrapped Salmon Filet. I think I had a seafood theme going for this cruise!

For dessert, Dan had the cranberry orange cheesecake.

DisneyCruise126.jpg

I had the Strawberry Sable with Passionfruit Cream.

DisneyCruise127.jpg

Oksana also brought out an extra dessert to share. Ok...we will stuff it down!

Chocolate cake!

We rolled out of dinner and went back to the cabin for an early night. We had plans to get up early and go running on deck 4 in the morning. Thor was on one of the movie channels. Dan had been wanted to catch that movie so we watched that and then went to sleep.

On our 2nd sea day (Sunday) we woke up at 6 am to do a long run. We have a 10 mile race coming up in Philadelphia on May 6 and I really wanted to get in a long run while we were on vacation. I had visions of eating myself to death and then trying to drag myself through the 10 miler  We didn't want to get up, but made ourselves! I wanted to hit deck 4 before it became too crowded.

We made it down to deck 4 by 6:45 and there were a few runners. The running track is 0.333 miles long so I had grand plans to try for 10 miles which would be 30 laps :ROFLOL: Yep, I am crazy. Anyway, we start to run and notice some people are running against traffic. Found out they were doing this because maintenance was powerwashing parts of the deck. People were running half way and then turning around where the deck was closed. Ugh....I did not want to run like that.

Change of plans...We went up to Parrot Cay buffet and had breakfast as soon as they opened. After breakfast, we let our breakfast digest a bit and then went to try our run again. This is where the title of my report comes into play.

I took this photo the day before our run, not thinking that it would be very prophetic of things to come!

DisneyCruise094.jpg

We started our run and noticed a father with a little boy. The boy was probably about 6 or 7 and the father was trying to teach him how to play shuffleboard. The boy was more interested in wielding the shuffleboard sticks (not sure of the proper term) as ninja staffs! The kid did not want to play shuffleboard! As we ran by, the boy would jump into the running lane nearly jabbing us with the stick. The father was very apologetic and would tell the boy to watch out and stay to the side yadda, yadda, yadda. Do a lap, and the kid would nearly jab us again because he wasn't paying attention. I wonder if the other runners were having this problem because we weren't the only ones out there. The worst time came when we were about to pass, the father told the boy to move to the side and he did. At the last second, as we passed the boy jumped into me and my the wire from my earbuds got wrapped around the stick. Grrrrrr! The kid doesn't care about playing shuffleboard! Do something else with him! The next time we go by they are gone. Oh thank goodness! As we come up the other side, we realize they are not gone, they just moved to the other side of the boat! GAAAAAHHHHH! Doesn't the guy realize the runners are running laps! At this point we decide to call it after doing 3 miles. It was just too dangerous! There were a couple other kids playing and they were fine because they were a little older and aware of their surroundings. I don't blame the boy at all because he wasn't being bad, he just wasn't aware. There were people walking laps, there were people running......TAKE THE STICKS AWAY!!!! PLEASE!!!

I really wish we had been able to run early. It kind of stunk to have a running track but not be able to use it when they clean it in the morning when most people run!!

We went back to the room, showered and changed and went up to deck 9 to find some lounge chairs by the adult pool. Unfortunately we were a little late and they were all taken. We did find some next to the large windows in the adult section and settled down to nap and read. We had lunch at Topsider's buffet.

Looks like I didn't take too many pics today!

I do have the Navigator from that day. I will try to scan it tonight. Since it was decided in the morning not to go to port, they gave us a photocopy type addendum with new activities planned for the extra day at sea. For Key West, they just gave us a little shopping map which only included the shops right around the port. I am not sure if I still have that or not. It was kind of a bummer not to stop. We had planned to rent bikes and go to the butterfly garden, Hemmingway's house and maybe the Audubon house. So jealous you will be going soon :) Are you stopping in Key West too? Hopefully you will have better weather than we did!

Yes! We're slated for Key West, Nassau, & CC! We originally planned to just rent a little electric cart & putter about Key West looking around & checking out some of the sights. But this *is* DH's 40th bday celebration so naturally we had to find some wings to get off the ground. So we're booked to do a 50 minute private sea plane tour in the afternoon. Should be awesome.

You totally have me worried about the running track now. I just finished my 'Ease into 5k' app and have plans to keep working the 30 minute runs. I know I'll feel better for the duration of the trip if I do. I wonder what time the crews start their cleaning??? If I run in the morning I get up & out before 6. I loathe treadmills. Ugh! Don't wanna ruin your report by asking if you attempted running any other mornings. If you did and have any other info to share, PM me! I just gotta run!!!

I didn't try running any other mornings. We did do the Castaway Cay 5k though. That was great! The weather wasn't too hot. I remember reading your last report about how miserably hot it was when you and your son did it! There was a nice breeze and it wasn't bad. There were about 26 people who did it so it was a nice turnout too. I have never run on a treadmill so I don't know if I would like it or not. I have heard people have done it on cruises and find it nauseating with the movement of the ship. Blech!! Hopefully you will have better luck than I did!

My husband would be so jealous with the seaplane thing! He loves to fly and always wants to do the small plane tours, but I am a bit of a chicken when it comes to flying on those itty bitty planes!!

For Sweetpee! I scanned our Navigator for Key West and the shopping pamphlet, but I am not sure you will be able to see it here well. If you want to see better copies, I have them in pdf form on my computer. PM me if you would like me to email them to you!

Tonight the show was Twiced Charmed which was really good. It is a new twist on the Cinderella story and exclusive to the Disney Magic. I think I liked this one and Disney Dreams best.

Dinner was a dress up night (sorry no pics of us dressed up. I didn't like them) at Parrot Cay. They made us limbo into the dining room which was a little awkward in the shoes I was wearing. Wasn't really a fan of that on a dress up night!

Loved the food here! For appetizer I had the Baked Crab Dip Martinique with plantain chips and homemade tortilla chips. So yummy! Dan skipped an app.

DisneyCruise142.jpg

Soups -

I had the Cream of Asparagus with Crab.

DisneyCruise144.jpg

Dan had the Cream of Mango and Papaya Soup.

DisneyCruise143.jpg

Entrees -

I had Island Spiced Grilled Ribeye

DisneyCruise145.jpg

Dan had the Mixed Grill which had beef, lamb and bacon-wrapped sausage

DisneyCruise146.jpg

Desserts

I had the French Toast Banana Bread pudding

DisneyCruise148.jpg

Dan had the creme brulee cheescake

DisneyCruise150.jpg

Oksana also brought out a trio for us. Ugh. I could barely eat another bite.

DisneyCruise151.jpg

I ate to the point of not feeling well tonight. We went back to the room to recover for a little bit and then headed out to see Max Winfrey. He was doing his adult show at Rockin' Bar D. He was hilarious! Great show. Wish it was a little longer.

Nassau and swimming with seals tomorrow!

We woke up bright and early on Monday morning. We were supposed to meet at 7:30 in Diversions for our Seal Experience at Blue Lagoon excursion. I was kind of awakened by some engine noise but didn't think much of it and kind of drifted in and out of sleep. I had no idea that the noise was us docking in Nassau. I was hoping to catch some pics coming into port. Our alarm went off and I went to look out our verandah. I was amazed to see this!

DisneyCruise153.jpg

DisneyCruise156.jpg

DisneyCruise157.jpg

It really is a weird feeling to have 2 days out on the ocean and wake up in port. I almost forgot what land looked like!

DisneyCruise158.jpg

We went up to Goofy's Galley to get a quick breakfast. We went back to the room and grabbed the things we wanted to take with us.

We were soon cleared for debarking and we followed our tour guide to the boat to take us to Blue Lagoon. We were waiting for the entire group to catch up so I had time to take a few shots.

As we were waiting we saw something on the horizon. What is that? Could it be?
Yes it is!! It's the Dream!

DisneyCruiseVacation022-1.jpg

DisneyCruiseVacation024.jpg

I heard that this was the first time that 2 Disney ships would be docking together in Nassau.

We made our way to the boat that would take us to Blue Lagoon. I am glad we were with a tour group because there were quite a few guys at the dock trying to solicit people to go on tours with them.

DisneyCruiseVacation026-1.jpg

When we left on our boat we got a good look at the Magic and the Dream hangin' together!

It was about a 20-30 minute ride to Blue Lagoon.

DisneyCruiseVacation032.jpg

We finally arrived at our destination!

DisneyCruiseVacation036.jpg

DisneyCruiseVacation037.jpg

We did the Sea Lion Experience first. We had a short 15 min orientation and then it was time to interact with the seals. We first went down on the dock and the trainer had the sea lion give us a kiss on the cheek.

IMG_0006.jpg

Then we all got in the water (there were about 10 people in our group) and the trainer had the sea lion interact with each of us. We got to pet her, she gave kisses on the lips (lol), hugs etc. It was really a great experience. They sold a video and pictures. The video was pricey and not the best quality ($50). The pics were a little more reasonable. We got the 3/$39 package.

Love this TR so far!!! :sohappy:

Glad you survived your car ride from NJ! It's not THAT bad going down but when it's over, all you want to do is get home. I remember thinking on Monday when we were driving on the Va to Maine portion on the ride how I was just ready to be home, in my own house and out of that car!!! lol

The food looks sooooo good. I love food so a cruise would be heaven for me!! I'd want to eat all the desserts first though... :lookaroun

I can't believe that kids father didn't kep him out of your way when you were running. After the 2nd or 3rd time you went by you figure he would have realized you're running in laps and that the kid was in the way... Sheesh!!!!

The seals encounter looks sooooo awesome! We're looking into doing an excursion in Nassau on the girls cruise next year and that may just be the one for us. What was the pricing on it? It looks like a lot of fun.

Can't wait to read more!!

I love love love the mushroom risotto!! It's my favorite.

I can't believe the Dad didn't get a clue when you were running! That's crazy!

That's an excellent picture of the two ships. It's an awesome size comparison.

Great sea lion pictures too! How fun!

Lol! Yes we survived! We had a much tougher time on the way up driving overnight. We were so excited to leave and get our trip underway but it quickly caught up with us. I think if we do it again we will leave at 3 am. It was much easier doing most of the driving during the day.

The food was awesome! Still a couple nights of dinners left! There was a coffee shop in the adult section that had a little refrigerator case with little desserts in ALL DAY that were just free for the taking! :slurp:

Yes that father was so clueless! He yelled at the kid everytime. Take him somewhere else!

The sea lions were great! We went with the sea lions because they were a little cheaper than the dolphin experience and a lot cheaper than the dolphin deep water swim. We were with people who had done the dolphin experience before and they liked the sea lions better because they were a little more interactive. Kind of more like dogs LOL! I think it was $115 per person. We weren't allowed to bring anything in the water with us so the only pics we could get were the ones that they take.

Thanks for reading! More to come!

We left the sea lion area after picking up our pictures.

On our way to the beach we saw this Royal Tern sitting on a piling. This was a little exciting for me since I like to bird and this was a new one for my list!

DisneyCruiseVacation050-1.jpg

It was soooooo windy and a little chilly. Not exactly great swimming weather!

DisneyCruiseVacation051.jpg

We ate some lunch because we were getting really hungry. The food was REALLY expensive. You had to buy tickets from the bar and then walk over to where they had the food. Prices were a little hard to find but $15 got you a cheeseburger, veggie burger or hotdog(I think), fries, a drink and an apple. For $25 you got a bigger lunch. I forget what was on that menu. They do have a little store that has chips and soda and stuff if you don't want to go for the lunch.

After lunch we went out to the beach. The surf was really rough so they had the ocean side beach closed for swimming.

DisneyCruiseVacation052-1.jpg

The lagoon side was open though. We went to a quiet area where there seemed to be less people. We soon found out why. It was close to the ocean side of the island and it was really windy and cold. We moved down to where the rest of the people were. It was much warmer and less windy. I only waded in the water because I was just too cold. This wasn't the Bahamas was it? I thought it was supposed to be warm here! It gave new meaning to the term "island breezes"!
