Lessons Learned by a First Time Cruiser: Kids, Shuffleboard and Runners Don't Mix!

Hi Everyone! We just got back from a fantastic cruise aboard the Disney Magic. Now, like most everyone else that takes a Disney cruise, I am hooked! There were a couple things that didn't go exactly as planned, but we still had a great time and can't wait to do another. Unfortunately with the Disney Marathon next year, a trip to Disney next summer with my niece and possibly the Disneyland Half in 2013, I think another cruise will have to wait till 2014. Maybe prices will come down on the Fantasy by then! So without further delay...on with the trip report! :sohappy:

Fabulous report so far! Love the shot of your pups. :D

All of your pictures are great...the food looks sooooo good. That stinks that the weather was a little chilly...and ugh, that little twerp messed up your run! BOO! Doesn't he know you guys are going Goofy?! :king:

Can't wait for more! :sohappy:

Glad you are enjoying it! :sohappy: Apparently he did not know we are going Goofy! I should have informed him. It probably wouldn't have made a difference though! :brick:

Just got caught back up on your TR! Even though you had the issues with that little boy on the running track, don't you just love early morning runs out in the middle of the Atlantic with the sun just starting to come up! Oh how I wish that's what I were doing right now!

Great updates. Can't wait to keep on reading!

It was pretty neat running on the ship! I wish we could have gotten an earlier start though. Do they really have to power wash a jogging deck at prime running hours?! By the time we finally started the sun had been up for awhile. Still better than running at home anyday though!:p

Here are some more pics from our Nassau day. As you can see, I took lots of the Dream! I forgot to add that my pics from Nassau and from Castaway Cay are mostly taken with my point and shoot Canon, so the quality isn't quite as good. Didn't want to lug the Rebel and all my lenses! Also didn't want to risk losing it or damaging it.

Wonder whose house this is?! Nice rides in the "driveway"! :ROFLOL:

Finally, after all the stormy, cloudy weather, we had a beautiful sunset tonight!

DisneyCruise185.jpg

Tonight in the Walt Disney Theater, they had a showing of Chimpanzee which opened in theaters just the day before. This was the featured show of the night. We went to see it, because when I saw the previews I knew that I wanted to see it. It was a wonderful movie!

We had dinner at Palo. Yum!!! We did feel a little out of place because it is so fancy but the food was delicious. I wonder if the Palo waiters sometimes get left out of the tips because ours kept "making sure his service was to our liking". We had planned to tip, but he kept saying that. It was getting a little annoying.

DisneyCruise205.jpg

Just before we ordered, I looked out the window and saw the Dream all lit up! I ran out to get some pics, but I didn't have the right lens. My pics were really bad but here's the best so you get the idea lol.

DisneyCruise195.jpg

For an appetizer, I had the calamari.

DisneyCruise196.jpg

Dan had the bean soup.

DisneyCruise197.jpg

For entrees, I had the Lobster ravioli (yet, seafood again!)

DisneyCruise198.jpg

Dan had the beef ravioli....yep, take him to a fancy restaurant and he gets the beef ravioli. At least it tasted better than Chef Boyardee! :ROFLOL:

DisneyCruise200.jpg

We both had the chocolate souflee for dessert. Sorry I didn't take pictures. I think we inhaled them!

Ugh...we're home and we're soooo no happy about it! I called Brian over to look at the pic of the Magic & Dream side by side in Nassau. He pointed to the Magic and said, "Awesome". Then he pointed to the Dream and said, "Not as awesome". Guess which ship they liked better???? LOL!

Your Nassau excursion looked cool! Definitely need to try that one next time. We all thought Atlantis was waaaaay over-rated. Glad we did it but not likely to do it again.

Palo! OMG! We did the brunch which was incredible even with me not feeling very good that day. We cancelled our dinner because my stomach just wasn't up to it. I felt so bad not eating more when we were there. Who'd you have for your server? We had Mirko from Croatia. Great service.

As for fishing for "excellent" ratings, I found that annoying, too. Our concierge, wait staff, etc. Then they ask on the comment card if you felt pressured to give an excellent rating. I wonder how many people answer that truthfully. It's not that they ask for the excellents point-blank but they sure go waaaaay overboard carrying on about the importance of filling that bubble in. :D

Can't wait to see more from your report. I'm uploading pics/video as I type.....

Welcome back! It is such a reality check coming back isn't it? I don't like it either! It is so funny that your family liked the Magic better! Hmmm, we wanted to do the Dream or Fantasy next. Maybe we should stick with the Magic!

I can't remember what our waiter's name was at Palo. He was really tough to understand because he had a very heavy accent. I can't even remember where he was from. It was definitely great service and he was very attentive. We were joking that there must be hidden microphones recording us because whenever we talked about needing something, he was right there. We didn't get pressured too much about the service except for Palo. Our room steward always asked if we were happy and if we needed anything, but he said it in a way that didn't feel like fishing lol!

I can't wait to read your report! We were thinking of Atlantis next time, but it is kind of pricey. Looking forward to your review of it! Hopefully I will be able to finish mine this weekend.

I have to back track a little because I just remembered a funny thing that happened. The night that we came back to the room and we found Pluto set up next to the Pluto towel animal, I remembered telling you that Dan was ecstatic about the Pluto towel critter. Now the rest of the story.....He put the Pluto towel critter on top of our little dresser-type cubby thing for our clothes. He even kept his chocolate eyes on him. The next night when we came in Pluto was gone :cry: , replaced with...

DisneyCruise136.jpg

We don't know! I said Walrus, Dan said Turtle. We weren't quite sure. Dan was so upset about loosing Pluto though! He was cracking me up. He walked in the room and was speechless, "What the...what the....WHERE IS PLUTO and WHAT IS THAT?!" He was a Mr. Pouty Pants for a little while. :ROFLOL:

He was appeased by the towel monkey that made an appearance in honor of Pirate Night.

DisneyCruise215.jpg

Anyway sorry for that silly digression! After Palo, we went to check out the Pirate Party. For me, it was just ok. I really was there for the fireworks. It was neat to see the characters and for Mickey to make his grand entrance but the character part was so short. The fireworks were great though! The buffet looked and smelled so good, but we were stuffed from Palo so we passed. It was time for bed. Castaway Cay tomorrow!

Yay! Today was Castaway Cay day! It is a little bittersweet though because tomorrow we will have to leave this beautiful ship.

We had an early light breakfast at Goofy's Galley. I had a danish and some fruit while Dan had a yogurt with peaches. We were planning to run the Castaway Cay 5k today so we didn't want to eat anything too heavy. We hadn't docked yet when we were up on deck 9 having a pite to eat.

Here we come!

DisneyCruise005.jpg

DisneyCruise007.jpg

Let's get this baby docked!

DisneyCruise009.jpg

We met at Diversions about 8 am to sign up and get our bib numbers. Luckily we went early because we ended up having to run back to our rooms to get our ids. I didn't realize that we might need our ids to get back on the boat in Castaway Cay. We had only brought our KTTW cards. Turns out we didn't need them to get back on but they told us that Bahamian officials could ask for them at anytime when you get back on.

The group of runners were a little late getting off the ship, so we didn't end up starting the 5k till close to 9:30 (was supposed to start at 9:00). There were about 26 people in total running today. Not a bad turnout! It was a nice run. It was warm, but not blistering hot. Dan and I finished in just over 31 minutes (forget our exact time). He could have finished sooner than me, but he waited for me to catch up. We got some neat medals (plastic) and a Magical Moments certificate (came to our room later that day). There was a 20-something year old guy who was walking by the finish line and was incredulously asking everyone if they had just run the 5k. He was giving everyone high fives and saying good job! That was nice of him lol. He wasn't a cast member, just someone on vacation.

We went back to the ship to change for the beach. First a pic with Pluto and our medals!

IMG_0001.jpg

And a pic with the Magic!

IMG_0002.jpg

After changing we headed back to the island. First stop was lunch. We were famished after having a light breakfast and then running.

We went to Cookies Too.

DisneyCruise018.jpg

I had a burger w/ cole slaw, German potato salad, pina colada upside down cake, and mini banana bread loaf. Everything was good except the burger. It tasted like it had been sitting for awhile even though the place had just opened. Dan had the chicken and ribs which he said was pretty good.

We hopped the tram to Serenity Bay after lunch.

We did not stay at Serenity Bay very long. It was freezing on that part of the island. I think because it is on the oceanside and less protected. I needed a sweatshirt which I didn't have! We decided to head back to the Pelican Point area. We wanted to try Pelican Plunge anyway.

Love the details!

DisneyCruise025.jpg

DisneyCruise027.jpg

DisneyCruise028.jpg

Pelican Plunge was great! I think we did each slide twice. It wasn't too bad swimming out to the slides except when I almost got kicked in the face by a guy who was in a super hurry to get there and felt he had to swim by me fast and cut me off. I was just doing a relaxing breast stroke to get to the platform and I guess I was going to slow for him. Boy when we got on the platform it was COLD! The water was warm but the wind was a blowin'! Brrrrrr! I think we would have done more slides but it was chilly! I was amazed by the number of parents that were pushing kids down the slide that clearly did not want to be pushed down the slide! Some kids were in full-blown panic attacks! And they were little too! Some didn't look older than 3 or 4! Geez!

DisneyCruise032.jpg

DisneyCruise033.jpg

DisneyCruise034.jpg

After the Pelican Plunge fun it was time for some relaxin' in the sun!

Even though we were at one of the family beaches, it was pretty peaceful. It didn't feel crowded. Does it feel more crowded when the Dream is here because there are more people on that ship. It was really nice!

DisneyCruise040.jpg

Again, the details are awesome!

DisneyCruise042.jpg

DisneyCruise046.jpg

DisneyCruise047.jpg

DisneyCruise048.jpg

We had a soft-serve ice cream snack. They had banana-flavored and mango-flavored. The banana was really strong banana. I think the mango was a little better. They also had vanilla and chocolate too.

DisneyCruise049.jpg

DisneyCruise050.jpg

DisneyCruise051.jpg

It was time to head back to the ship....sigh....It was about 3 pm and we needed to be back on the ship by 4. We wanted to take a snooze before the last show and dinner.

One of my favorite pics from the trip! A nice cast member took this.

Castaway is bittersweet! You want to be there but you know it's the last full day, too!

Yes, the beaches are waaaaaay more crowded when the larger ships come in. Biiiiig difference. I guess the difference in temperature also affected people on your cruise vs. mine because there were a lot more people in the water when we were there and we were on the same ship you were. Also I've noticed on both our visits to CC that the later in the afternoon it gets the less people will be out on the beach. I think people just wear out early. When we cruise the Fantasy next May, if I can't get a cabana for my brother & us to share we'll prob'ly wait until later in the afternoon to even get off the ship. I don't enjoy crowds.

Still lovin' your report, too! And congrats on your first CC5k!!!!

Love your report...hate to see it ending already! Congratulations on running the 5K. Sounds like you had perfect weather for it. :)

Ummmm, we totally answered that question honestly. Our server at dinner in the regular dining rooms pushed it a bit too much for us. He was the only one who did, but did so in such an annoying way.

Thanks Kristi, for sharing your trip with us!

Thanks! Nothing better than running on a tropical island! As long as it isn't sizzling out that is!
