Just Engaged: An August 2010 Trip Report!

As the title suggests, this was an especially exciting trip for us and I can’t wait to share all of the fun details. Seeing as how I am lucky enough to write one of these every few months or so, I’m going to forego the normal introductions. Instead, why don’t I share five non-Disney things you might not already know about the two of us? Let’s see... non-Disney stuff?! This might be hard!

1 – We love live music! Seriously, aside from Disney, this is what we spend money on. Some of our favorite artists we’ve seen live include David Gray, Ben Folds, Brandi Carlile, Ryan Adams and the Cardinals, KT Tunstall, She & Him, Jack Johnson, A Fine Frenzy, Counting Crows, Nickel Creek, and Jimmy Buffett to name a few.

2 – We name inanimate objects and refer to them as such... this is especially true for electronics, and oddly enough they really do take on personalities. No,seriously! For example, our laptops are Petunia (mine) and Frances (his); our Garmin’s are Neville and Navi; and my camera is more affectionately known as Ginger. Weird? Maybe just a little bit. :ROFLOL:

3 – As much as I hate to admit it, we are complete and utter TV junkies. We LOVE our TV. And if I had to pick the one show we are jointly most excited to see this fall season it would have to be Dexter. Bring on the creepy.

4 – We are totally one of those couples who met at a bar. It just so happened that we both worked there while in college. Ahhh... everyone loves a good cliché, right?! :lookaroun

5 – We have a standing tradition of buying one another a book to celebrate each holiday. And when I say holiday, I mean every holiday you can think of from St. Patrick’s Day to Christmas. Usually the only time we stray outside the lines is on birthdays. We’ve built quite an impressive collection so far ranging from popular fiction to non-fiction, children’s books to biographies and we throw in some Disney “coffee table” books and “Art of’s” for good measure every now and then. Amazon is our friend! As are the myriad of used book stores we come across in the different places we visit. We already have enough to fill our own library when we buy a house!

Of course, no introduction is complete without the requisite photo, but for the heck of it, let’s go “old school.” Here we are with the elusive Rescue Rangers in 2004:

Nov04040.jpg

We started planning this trip sometime after the Princess Half Marathon and eventually booked when the AP rates came out earlier in the summer. To be more precise, while I was in the midst of a quick weekend trip with my mom, Brett called and made the resort reservations, solidifying our stay at Caribbean Beach from August 13-August 17. And then, as per usual, we decided we would drive down after work on Thursday, so we booked a hotel through priceline for the night of the 12th.

Just the other day I realized that we haven’t repeated a resort since I began writing trip reports... so here’s a look back:
The Contemporary – September 2008
Old Key West – December 2008
Port Orleans Riverside – January 2009
Wilderness Lodge/Animal Kingdom Lodge – July 2009
The Beach Club – December 2009
Pop Century – March 2010
Coronado Springs – June 2010

We were both incredibly excited for this trip because we felt like it was our first truly “us” trip in a long while that spanned a decent amount of time and didn’t include some kind of endurance event to focus on. Okay, so I’m not gonna lie... I went into this trip “hoping” there’d be a little something special, but not really expecting it. There was one small detail that tipped me off ahead of time. I ALWAYS maintain the reservations and type up a minimal list of our dining plans/confirmation #s and before I could do it for this trip, Brett told me he typed it up at work one day when he had some free time. Hmmmm... interesting. I started wondering if he’d made some changes to the dining. And then I started thinking, why would he have any reason to mess with our dining?! I tried to dismiss this thought though, mostly because I didn’t want to be disappointed if it turned out he wasn’t planning on proposing. Thankfully, he did! So let’s get to it…

We caught Ariel and Eric as their day was about to begin; therefore, the line was super short. Ariel was gorgeous, as always. I have yet to come across her when she’s not looking quite like herself, which I can’t say for some of the other princesses.

IMG_7135.jpg

Aw, yes, Ariel is very pretty!!

I love these boats; every time we take one I always wonder why we don’t do it more often.

IMG_7193.jpg

I totally have to agree. The first time we did this was to get from WL to Fort Wilderness for Trail's End. We LOVE those boat rides, and we take them whenever we get the chance!!

And with that, Team Cobra Bubbles won! Woohooo... here I am, all excited to have bragging rights and the CM calls us up to receive our prize.

Awesome!! How fun!!

Beautiful picture!!

Beautiful pic!! I love how it captures the calmness and serenity of mornings, before all the people arrive, etc. I love mornings at WDW.

It's because, every morning, there is a chance we might meet Chipper... or Dale!

Heehee! My hat's off to y'all with your serious character lovin'. Those 'munks are adorable as they come but even if I was guaranteed a winning lottery ticket I'd still be miserable and have to think about why I have to get out of bed early. Mornings are not my thing at all. LOL!

Hi Holly. I'm the stranger from Ohana's and yes we did have a great vacation. We tried Ohana's cause you and others rave about it (and Coral Reef) and were very pleased with both. Congratulations to you and Brett on your engagement. I am enjoying your trip report very much. Janine

^ Agree.

This is my requisite comment per post (yanno, the one where I make Holly blush?)

Voilà: Brett, loving your KP pose.. that theme song is so catchy and will now be stuck in my head until I go to sleep (danger or trouble, I'm there on the doubleee..).
Holly, the pictures with Goofy are hilarious.

Can we please make our next trips match so we can get classy character pictures (yanno, since you are always dressed so classily?).

I'll take those raycer pix ;)

Wow, I have no idea how I didn't see the TR before (and I absolutely love the pictures)! Congrats Holly and Brett! I'm so happy for both of you (and hopefully we can meet up someday). :)

You all know which left I’m talking about, right? It’s the one that crosses over the TTC tramway and takes travelers past the Polynesian. NO WAY. Immediately, my mind starts reeling. I kid you not, my first thought after I realized we were going to the Poly was, OMG he’s totally gonna propose during this trip. Then, of course, I start going crazy trying to figure out how, and where, and when. That, and I couldn't wipe the silly grin off my face. We have so many favorite spots throughout the parks and resorts that I was clueless as to when or where. Scenario after scenario was running through my mind at the speed of light. I was just hoping he wouldn’t wait until the end of the trip to do it. We exchanged a knowing look as we were pulling up to the entrance. He knew, I knew. But we weren’t talking about it. So we handed off our luggage to bell services, and started walking towards the entrance to check in. I was so excited to be staying at the Polynesian. It’s one of those resorts that has always been off-limits, pricewise.

And then… BAM! He dropped to one knee and proposed right by the waterfall as we were walking in. It caught me completely off guard and it was the last thing I expected. My mind was reeling; I don’t even remember half of what he said, I’m sure he was waxing poetic about our love, but all I can remember is thinking “FINALLY!” which I said quite loudly before sealing it with a kiss. And just like that, we were engaged. I’m so glad he proposed at the very beginning of our trip because it kept me from constantly wondering when is it gonna happen? And it kept him from acting all weird and/or nervous leading up to the moment. Instead, we were able to spend the whole trip celebrating... at the POLYNESIAN no less!

What a great way to propose :)

Too cute!!

IMG_6384_1.jpg

We headed for the Jungle Cruise (not even a 5 minute wait), and as soon as we got on the boat, our skipper told us one of the boats had died out on the course. We were told the only way they have of addressing this is to bring all the boats that are ahead of it in to the dock, and then send another boat out backwards to get it. Is this legit? Because we were still docked, we were given the options of waiting about 10-15 minutes or getting off. Surprisingly we were the only people who chose to hop off. We figured we'd just go ride Pirates, but the line was absolutely INSANE (probably due to JC and the Magic Carpets being down). And we didn’t really want to wait so we browsed about the shop.

Yes it is. If a boat breaks down, another boat has to go backwards, attatchs a rope to the broken-down boat, and then pulls it back to dock.

And I love the ring! It's beautiful

I love it!

Mixing it up a bit, we took the boat back to the Polynesian. Throughout the whole trip we kept marveling at our accommodations. We were going back to “our resort” instead of just going to the Poly for lunch… it was a totally different feeling. One I’m desperately trying to bottle up and keep forever, I might add
I felt the same way the first time we stayed there for our honeymoon. So many years we had dreamed of one day being lucky enough to stay there, and here we were, finally getting to do it. I felt like I didn't want to go to the parks because I wanted to soak up so much Poly time!

A picture of our future ceremony location from the water:

Ah, Sunset Point! We saw a couple exchanging vows there from our balcony at Tokelau. So romantic. Best wishes!

Oh my gosh, a big congratulations to you both. I can't say I have heard a better engagement story, that is just so amazing and you did a great job allowing all of us to relive it with you.

You definitely know all the great places to go and what to do, I will definitely be getting in contact with you when we finally plan our Disney vacation. We had our beautiful baby boy Oliver 11 weeks ago and he is just such an blessing. He is a wonderful little boy and we cannot wait to bring him to Disney. We are taking him on his first cruise at the end of January, we are doing a B2B on the Freedom. We thought it was only fitting to bring our cruise baby on his first cruise but I will definitely need some pointers on Disney once Oliver gets a little older.

Congratulations again, I am just SO very happy for you and I cannot wait to hear all about the wedding plans !!!!!

Golly! It amazes me how early y'all get up every day. And you look so chipper. How is this done???

Ohana for breakfast...love the characters and the ambiance. It'd be perfect if you could order from the Kona menu and have the Ohana experience. Yeah!

Your volcano pool pics are gorgeous. I soooo wanna touch my toes to that perfectly still water. **sigh**

Via Napoli...this one is on our list for the upcoming trip. I'm a little worried it won't go over so well. I'm intrigued and really wanna try it. I'll have to prep the guys beforehand. "Okay guys. It's not Papa John's pizza...." Do you really think it was your pizza choice?

Can't wait to hear what Pixie dust you got!!!!

Mornings are, by far, my favorite time at Disney. It's peaceful and I always feel refreshed in the morning, excited to see what the day brings.

As for Via Napoli, I really do believe that our pizza choice had a lot to do with it. It was just something about the flavor combinations that didn't work for us. Plus the calamari, which is supposed to be crisp, was quite soggy... not a good thing. I'm tempted just to try the all cheese one next time. It's definitely not Papa John's, but in my opinion that is a good thing, although the boys might not agree.

I know you'll love the pixie dust, seeing as how it had a little something to do with what I believe is one of your favorites.

Loved the pics of the tables/chairs in Morocco and the chandelier in Via Napoli.
Maybe we'll get to try out Via Napoli this trip, although considering that we are used to NY pizza, I'm afraid it might not be worth it...

I have a new appreciation for how much work goes into these reports--you are a superhero, woman!!

I haven't checked back in on your trip report yet over the weekend, so I'll be curious to see if you did try Via Napoli. I can see where it may not compare to what you are used to, though.

Superhero?! Or woman with too time on her hands?! :ROFLOL: You're so right though, these things take A LOT of time.

Your photos of the Poly pool are really nice, especially the panorama. Do you use Photoshop to stitch your pics? I have tried (in Photoshop Elements) and it just always comes out looking weird for me

Love the series of Goofy pics! So fun!

Too bad about Via Napoli. I give you guys props for your bold (to me) pizza choice...at least they got the crust right!

I do use Photoshop to stitch my pictures together. I try not to use more than 3 shots, and I auto align and auto blend both outside pictures to the center one (with the outside picture sitting on top of the center image). The distortion does make things come out looking weird, and if you don't get the two images lined up well, it can look even weirder. That's when I crop the top and bottom to eliminate the parts that don't come together well.

While the pizza choice was somewhat bold, it was still one that incorporated lots of ingredients I already like. That's why I was surprised when I didn't like it.

Aw, yes, Ariel is very pretty!!

I totally have to agree. The first time we did this was to get from WL to Fort Wilderness for Trail's End. We LOVE those boat rides, and we take them whenever we get the chance!!

Beautiful pic!! I love how it captures the calmness and serenity of mornings, before all the people arrive, etc. I love mornings at WDW.

Thanks, Melanee. You and I are totally on the same page when it comes to mornings. I can recall reading some of your trip reports and shaking my head emphatically in agreement with how you described the mornings. There's just an extra layer of magic on them!

Hi Holly. I'm the stranger from Ohana's and yes we did have a great vacation. We tried Ohana's cause you and others rave about it (and Coral Reef) and were very pleased with both. Congratulations to you and Brett on your engagement. I am enjoying your trip report very much. Janine
Janine!! Yay... I'm so glad you said hello, and even happier to see that you posted on my trip report. Glad to hear you all had such a wonderful trip. And thank you.

^ Agree.

Kenzie, when is your next trip?! We'll start the planning now. :D You, my friend, have style so it's nice to hear you think I dress classily.

I agree she does dress so classy!
Woohooo... you know, classy is one of the words I keep using to describe this elusize wedding dress I need to buy. Classy, elegant and timeless. Love those words.

Can I volunteer to take the pics, too?

I love the team name Cobra Bubbles! Brilliant.

Nicole... I'll take all the volunteers I can get. We'll put you and Kenzie in the second sea raycer. You two can catch the whole ceremony from a different angle than Kelly and Kerby626.

As for the POG juice... it'll change your life. It's a mixture of passion fruit, orange and guava juices. It's only second to margaritas in my opinion.

You write the best trip reports, Holly! Can't wait for more. Congratulations on getting engaged! You two are such a cute couple.
Thanks, Danielle Shay, for the kind words and congrats! This one has turned into a procrastinator's trip report.

Wow, I have no idea how I didn't see the TR before (and I absolutely love the pictures)! Congrats Holly and Brett! I'm so happy for both of you (and hopefully we can meet up someday).

What a great way to propose

And I love the ring! It's beautiful

Thanks, Joanna! I actually looked around for you while we were at the Studios, too bad we didn't see you that day.

Yes it is. If a boat breaks down, another boat has to go backwards, attatchs a rope to the broken-down boat, and then pulls it back to dock.

It makes sense due to all those narrow channels; I guess I'd just never thought about it before. Does it happen often?

I do the same thing! My Garmin is named Steve, my point and shoot is Mo, and my dSLR is Big Betty.
Big Betty?! That is just PERFECT.

I felt the same way the first time we stayed there for our honeymoon. So many years we had dreamed of one day being lucky enough to stay there, and here we were, finally getting to do it. I felt like I didn't want to go to the parks because I wanted to soak up so much Poly time!

Ah, Sunset Point! We saw a couple exchanging vows there from our balcony at Tokelau. So romantic. Best wishes!

Yes. Exactly. I was the same way, wanting to bottle up the experience and keep it forever. I feel so lucky to be heading back for our wedding/honeymoon. And I'm obsessed with Sunset Pointe, I can't wait.

When he was just 3 weeks old we won the lottery so the last few weeks have been very crazy for us. One of the first things we did was go and find out how early babies can cruise with Disney (Carnival will only allow them at 6 months). Disney is 12 weeks but we decided to wait until we was a little older to really enjoy all the characters.

Angie!! Congratulations to you and Trevor on the little one. I remembered you going on one "last" pre-baby cruise in the spring. I'm so happy to hear you now have a healthy little boy. It's so cool that ya'll are taking him on his first cruise so soon. Definitely let me know when you start planning a Disney trip, as I'd love to help with the details.

And thank you for the congrats!

We had originally planned on walking over to the Studios, but a Friendship boat was pulling up just as we left the International Gateway so we hopped aboard. And it’s a good thing too, because within a matter of minutes the sky had opened up. It was pouring.

IMG_7753.jpg

IMG_7755.jpg

By the time we reached the Studios, it had let up just a little bit. We made our way back to the Muppet Courtyard for an old favorite. I was shocked by how much of a visible difference was made with the digital update. It looked great.

IMG_7780.jpg

IMG_7781.jpg

And now, can we take a moment to appreciate one of our favorite muppets, Sam Eagle? We’re still upset there isn’t a Sam Eagle plush to be bought. Actually, I think there was one a while back, but unfortunately that was before we started the collection.

IMG_7772.jpg

I always get so frustrated in the 3D shows (and others) when people crowd the entrance doors and then they don’t move all the way across the row when they get in the theater. It’s got to be one of my Disney etiquette (or lack thereof) pet peeves. This is one of the reasons why I love Sam Eagle. My favorite part of the whole show might just be when he emphatically exclaims “Not moving across the ENTIRE row is DISTINCTLY UNPATRIOTIC!” LOVE it.

After the show we stopped in the Stage One Company Store to pick up another companion, Kermit!

IMG_7778.jpg

While there we noticed that the lady in front of us used her AP to get 10% off. When did they start allowing folks to use their AP at all merchandise locations? In the past you could only receive the discount at the World of Disney. This is great news. Anyone know when they made this change?

On our way through Pixar Place we noticed that Toy Story Midway Mania was down for some sorta refurbishment. Huh. I didn’t realize this was on the agenda for the week we were there. I’m so glad we got to ride on our first day in the park.

IMG_7786.jpg

Awww… sadness.

IMG_7787.jpg

To round out the plush for this trip, we picked up Woody Mickey. Hamm was next on our agenda for the Toy Story gang, but he’s still MIA in the parks. I’ve been reassured that he’ll pop back up, so let’s hope so.

Eventually we found ourselves at Starring Rolls… nom nom nom. We shared a delicious piece of praline cheesecake and a coke while trying to figure out what we wanted to do next.

IMG_7798.jpg

Block Party Bash was about to start and we hadn’t seen it since May 2008, so we figured, why not watch? I took a few pictures while we waited for the show to begin. I forgot how fun it was to actually wait for a parade at the Studios, thanks to the Citizens of Hollywood. In fact, I might even say that I enjoyed them more than the parade itself.

We just so happened to be in the Toy Story section when the parade rolled out. What I wouldn’t give for some meet and greets with many of these characters, like Mr. Potato Head, and most of the Bugs.

After the parade we wandered about Sunset Boulevard, coming upon the Theatre of the Stars just as the 4 pm showing of Beauty and the Beast was about to start.

IMG_7869_1.jpg

On our way into the theater one of the cast members struck up a conversation with us and congratulated us on our engagement. She walked us down to the VIP section and told us we’d have an opportunity to meet the characters afterwards!! While I knew it was a long shot, throughout the whole show I was hoping we’d get to meet Gaston. Therefore, to borrow a partial phrase from Sam Eagle... this is a tribute to all characters, but mostly Gaston! :ROFLOL:

IMG_7893.jpg

“No one’s slick as Gaston.
No one’s quick as Gaston.
No one’s neck’s as incredibly thick as Gaston’s.”

IMG_7896.jpg

IMG_7894.jpg

“For there’s no one as burly and brawny
As you see I’ve got biceps to spare.”

IMG_7897.jpg

IMG_7901.jpg

“No one says ‘no’ to Gaston!”

“My what a guy, that Gaston.”

The best part? At the very end of the show when Gaston came out to bow, as he was walking off stage, he pointed in my direction and made the “call me” sign with his hands just before one last flex of the bicep. I swear I’m not making this up. He must’ve noticed my obsession with photographing him throughout the entire show. :ROFLOL::ROFLOL:

IMG_7954.jpg

IMG_7953.jpg

So after the theatre cleared out a cast member came over to us and took us backstage for a quick meet and greet. Unfortunately, though, there was no Gaston.

Belle and the Beast were there to greet us, which was great because we’ve never met the Beast in human form!

IMG_7955.jpg

We said goodbye to the Studios and made our way out to the bus stop.

Back at the Polynesian we relaxed a bit before getting ready for our dinner over at the Wave. Initially we planned to have a quick dinner and get to another park. I think AK had extra magic hours and I really wanted to head over there for a drink at the Dawa Bar, but once at dinner we decided to take our time and enjoy ourselves rather than get in a rush. We had an excellent evening. I had a glass of wine and Brett ordered one of the beer flights to go with his meal. I apologize for the super blurriness, it’s so dang dark in that place.

IMG_7959.jpg

For dinner, Brett had the beef tenderloin with potato gratin and ratatouille. He liked it quite a bit, but unfortunately I don’t have a picture of it. I ordered the pork tenderloin with bourbon sweet potatoes and warm bacon spinach salad. DELISH!

IMG_7961.jpg

We were so full from dinner that we turned down dessert without even looking at the menu. However, our fabulous server, Stephanie, had other plans. She returned with two glasses of champagne in celebration of our engagement! Stephanie is my new best friend. Best dessert EVER!

I love the Wave and our dinner was super delicious, so we gave it three out of four NOMS. There wasn’t anything missing from our meal, it’s just that it was going up against some stiff competition from earlier in the trip.

Feeling perfectly loopy from the beer, wine and champagne we decided the best way to spend our evening was monorail hopping for drinks. :) Next stop: Mizner’s Lounge at the Grand Floridian, where we each ordered our favorite beer, a Newcastle for Brett and Blue Moon for me.

IMG_8020.jpg

IMG_8009.jpg

IMG_8010.jpg

The view from our table:

IMG_8001.jpg

Usually we are trying to pack everything we can into the last evening of a trip, but I was so content just to relax. I thoroughly enjoyed sitting at Mizner’s Lounge, listening to the band, and dreaming out loud about our upcoming wedding! I’m hoping, with the help of AP rates, that we’ll be able to stay at the Grand Floridian for part of our honeymoon. Fingers crossed!

IMG_7996.jpg

After our drinks we hopped back on the monorail to get to our final stop, the Polynesian. We grabbed some drinks and headed down to the pool to swim and watch the Electrical Water Pageant and Wishes. Yes, I know. We were watching Wishes from the Poly beach yet again. I actually got quite emotional and will even admit to getting a bit weepy. It had just been such a great trip… the kinda trip I didn’t want to ever end.
