I can't stand the abbreviations

DH,DS,DD are all ones that have been around for a long time..long before texting was the thing. I've been on message boards since my 16 year old was 2 and he was DS back then...

I do think when posting grammar and punctuation makes things so much nicer, but a little abbreviating is not exactly the end of the world. Too much "text speak" is annoying.. I try very hard to not even use it when texting ( which I do way more than my teen) so it doesn't often show up in my posts either.

Would I not read a post because of too many abbreviations..no..would I not subscribe..yes..

When I joined I found some abbreviations self explanatory but if I needed to know one i would have just asked. It takes way less time then arguing about it on a seperate thread. As far as DH I prefer to refer to mine as TFG (for those who don't know that stands for that f'n guy :ROFLOL:). Honestly it can be frustrating but it won't change no matter how many threads are started about it so might as well use the thread that explains them.

Inside joke with my friends, DH means d**khead. I use it when my husband is working my nerves. He's on my FB page so I use DH when I'm talking about him :) LOL he thinks it only means Dear Husband. hee hee. I'll say something like, "DH just walked in the door"

Now, I will use TFG hahaha

Are you suggesting that we should also start using self contained underwater breathing apparatus instead of the commonly accepted "scuba"? After all someone might not know what scuba means and we must do every thing we can to write to appeal to the lowest common denominator. Maybe we should also request that people no longer use the initalisim Washington DC and opt for the more correct and spelled out District of Columbia. That would also mean that the initialisms used for TV stations such as CNN, CBS, ESPN and the like should be dropped from the vernacular as well.

Initialisms, acronyms and abbreviations are simply part of the language.

What is this abbreviation "TV" of which you speak ?

The use of acronyms and initials is not the same as text speak. It predates the internet and cell phones. Read almost any technical manual, handbook, guidebook, cookbook, or even legal document from the last 150 years and you will find all kinds of shorthand including acronyms.

The process isn't just for the writer it is actually faster to read WDW, MILF, or ToT and the exact same information is conveyed. Just as Mr., TV, and fan do the same thing in everyday life. When reading a long document, or dozens of forum posts, acronyms actually benefit the reader. Granted it is only once they learn the acronyms, but honestly the learning curve is pretty small.

Almost all groups at one time or another develop jargon, of which acronyms and initializations are a type, to differentiate between insiders and outsiders. Even with-in a group sub-groups can form and start their own jargon. It is human nature. You can't stop it, so go with the flow learn the local-ease, and become an insider.

Each forum has its own flavor, and I've learned to assimilate in order to get along.

There are some forums that allow photos, tickers, etc in signatures which sometimes makes it difficult to actually find the post.

Others allow emoticons - some allow dozens per post, others (such as this one) will say something if you use too many. There are some forums that frown on using any at all, as they consider them a lazy substitute for not expressing yourself clearly.

Then there are "unmoderated" forums that allow any sort of language, photos, remarks (no matter how hateful) or ads to appear freely. Most of them do have an owner who will step in if they are unhappy about something - even the most anti-censorship people do finally reach a breaking point where they say "this will not be tolerated!"

Someone said they got the BLT and I thought they meant a sandwich. Had no idea it meant Bay Lake Tower.

Hey Brother.. you are so absolutely correct. many, many times in the past how many years of posting here, do I wonder, WHAT ARE THEY SAYING?

its just agonizing and frustrating to NO END.

Hey its good to see you posting here. and I miss our deep thread of "conversations".

To The Mom,

The Holidays have kept me busy, and I have not been on the Forum for a while. This being my first perusal in quite some time, and having found some enjoyment in your post, I have taken the liberty of proving a new avatar photo for your use and enjoyment. I'm not sure when I'll be able to log on again, and so I bid you a Happy New Year.
