But my question then is, without the Twilight Zone theme, what is the ride? Its just an elevator drop without an identity.

Well, yes, and Intamin built a theme park free fall elevator ride that predated Tower of Terror that was exactly that:

At one point DCA had another "tower drop" type ride over on PP that didn't survive long. I think Disney would always theme an attraction of that magnitude.

I think its pretty safe to say that overall, 99% of everyone going to DCA are still going to say, "where do I get a fastpass for Tower of Terror?" much to the chagrin of CM's who will probably be forced to say, "Oh, you mean Mission Breakout?"

This should have stayed ToT while they build a brand new ride for GotG somewhere else...is what I think you meant to say.

I meant if they needed to get marvel in the parks fast they could have Made Mission Breakout a temporary overlay and the one day build a brand new ride for the IP. Look at those wait times Hyper Space Mountain gets with Star Wars music and cheesy projections. Some GOTG music and show scenes would have worked just fine.

I'm not sick of reading your thoughts about this horrible decision. You shouldn't stop voicing your opinion, this is a discussion forum and you've been respectful. Think I'm going to stop talking about how much I hate the idea of SWL in Disneyland? Nope lol.

Lol, thank you! And to be Honest, everyone else has been respectful of my opinion and nobody has told me to shut up... yet.

No I know what you meant. Alas, wishing they could have done something different is a fast exercise in futility.

Let's get real for a sec... The Twilight Zone theme and story overall is verrrrry loose in the ToT. Sure, the quick video in the library and the faux Rod Serling V.O./use of the theme song is fun, but the Tower of Terror is wayyy more of a haunted house style attraction than it is Twilight Zone.

Anyone who's a fan of the show knows that there's generally some moral lesson to be learned tied together with some fun twist at the end. ToT has neither of these. It might as well be DCA's/DHS Haunted Hotel to Disneyland's Haunted Mansion. The show itself was not overly supernatural (at least not the ghostly kind) -- it was far more rooted in creepy sci-fi and strange scenarios. There's very little that's true to the core of the actual Twilight Zone to be found in the ride.

All true but this doesn't change the fact that TOT is a great attraction and it's theme is timeless. I think some more psychological elements would have been great but I don't think the ride suffers without them. Twilight Zone succeeds by setting the mood for the ride. In addition, I would add that IPs work the best when they are used to create the atmosphere and mood for an attraction but aren't relied on so heavily that we re watching the movie over again. Star Tours 1.0 v 2.0 would be a good example.

I agree it's a great attraction... Just saying that if you removed what little Twilight Zone elements there are, you'd still be left with the same ride more or less. Personally, I think the on-ride stuff is the weakest part of the whole attraction. The detail in the lobby, library, and boiler room are all fantastic, but the two on-ride scenes are actually kind of lame if you actually consider what's going on there. Best part of the ride, IMO, is the fact that you are sitting in a giant elevator and falling faster than gravity and then zipping back up. :)

You are right about this... and this is actually a reason why Twilight Zone could have used to better effect. TZ was an anthology series -- there was no story or characters to really base an attraction off of unless they wanted to play off one particular random episode. This gave them free range to create their own TZ-like story that held true to the TZ formula.

So... in the end, they chose to throw some mildly creepy ghost family at the end of a hallway and have you fall down an elevator shaft? Wuttt now?

And I'm not here defending GotG or anything. Despite its flaws, ToT is one of my favorite Disney attractions -- although probably moreso b/c I was a fan huge fan of the original at DHS for years before we got it out here. Just saying, it's not like they did some amazing bangup job with integrating the series to the point where I will be devastated over its loss, especially if they keep the original at WDW. :)

I agree that the two show scenes are probably the weakest part of the whole experience. The queue, distorted jazz music, the old Hollywood Haunted hotel theme, the star field, "Rod Serlings" voice and thrill factor is what does it for me.

Since it's fun to see all the props (and video) from the Twilight Zone, I'd consider the attraction to be a well dressed-up drop ride that is a tribute to the show.

PS: I agree with those who feel it's not quite right. There's strangeness without the trademark twist/moral. It's like omitted the third act.

At DLR right now and there is a giant crane behind TOT. It appears the exterior work has or is about to begin.

I saw that same crane last week...it was up one afternoon and I happened to spot it while walking through the esplanade.
It was gone the next day, probably just behind the building out of sight.

I totally forgot about it until you mentioned it.
