In what game has the most violent audience??? Soccer!

Clearly you've never been to a Red Sox/Yankees game during the playoff hunt...

Actually, this year FIFA has approved the use of a system that penalizes teams based on the actions of their fans. They lose points in the standings if their fans commit certain types of negative acts(one group going and beating another senseless, starting a riot, etc). So a team could theoretically win all of the matches in their group and end up in last still because of their fans.

I assume you are talking about me here Corrus. If that is the case please allow me to point out that I never showed any anger towards you, never insulted nor threatened you in any way. If you don't care for the sport, that is your perogative. There are many sports that I do not enjoy so I don't pay any attention to them.

My point was, and still is, that I find it very rude of you to come in to this thread and repeatedly insult the sport (and by extention it's fans). I can't fathom what positive you see coming from such behavior nor why you feel compelled to continue acting in this way.

As for the behavior of some of the fans of the sport, there is no excuse for it. But this sort of thing happens around sports of all types in almost every country in the world. How many major titles have sparked riots in the US? Here in Denver somone was shot to death for sporting the jersey of the Broncos opponents after the Broncos has just won the Super Bowl. We have had rioting in the streets after both of the Avalanches Stanley Cup wins, riots in Boulder after a number of CU Buffalo football games. Sports bring out the worst in some people, which is truly unfortunate as it also brings out the best in the majority of participants and fans.

As for the picture, I feel that it is much more a statement on the parenting skills (or lack therefore) of that boy than an indictment of the sport as a whole.
If it was about you, I would have addressed you...
No grudge against you or anyone, here on these forums...

Are you actually in Germany right now, as your location implies? If so, I'm extremely jealous.

God, I hope I'm not there. I have to be at work in Orlando tomorrow morning at 6:00AM... that commute would really bite.

But a vacation and World Cup trip would be sweet. Last Cup, before I had two kids, I was thinking about a German vacation right about now. One of my co-workers has to go to Germany in about a week and he had no idea why he was having such a hard time finding a hotel room.

Coolness. Do you live in or near Germany or did you fly over just for the Cup?
Born there, lived there all my life.
I'm in Frankfurt, which means that I'm more or less in the middle of Germany. We won't host any games after the quarterfinals, but we've several public viewing areas erected. The best one: A huge screen attached to pillars driven into the bed of the River Main, which can be watched from bleachers set up on the banks.
Even though I'm not that big a soccer-fan the vibes going through our country right now are contagious :animwink: We (DW & I) will definitely watch all games of our team, but most probably at home as we are not very fond of so many people in one place - except for WDW, of course.

How bad was it after the whooping France put on Brazil in '98?

It was awful!!!! People cried, hospitals registered lots of cases of heart attacks, lots of people painted the streets black, many didn't go to work the day after in "observance" :lookaroun ..... As for me... I didn't even watch the game, and went to WDW the day after. Some people in my group even thought of cancelling the trip!!!!

disneytati,
unfortunately everybody over here is hoping to make you cry again ;)
But your team is the most popular over here: Your boys will do a public training today in a stadium near Frankfurt seating 25,000. The tickets were given away for free starting at 10am last Tuesday. People started queuing up in frint of the ticket counters at 11pm on Monday evening, there was a 5km/3mile-traffic jam the next morning. So they decided to start giving away the tickets (Max 4 per person) at 915am - They were gone within an hour and we already have a black market for them.

I think it's a deterrant only, and I don't think FIFA would have the guts to implement it completely, if at all. After all it is the minority, not the majority, that cause problems and FIFA would be penalising everyone.

Anyways, Come On England! :sohappy: (I got my brand new England shirt ready!)

Oh, yeah... They are really popular here too. I saw something on TV about that public training. Everyone says they are going to win, and that's exactly the problem. Brazilian guys (specially soccer players) always lose when they are sure they are gonna win, because they relax too much and don't do their best because the game is already "won". And.. uh... they are not MY team... lol Have you seen my signature?

Hahahahahahaaa.... That sounds better.... not that I want them to lose, but life would go back to normal sonner...

Oh, by the way... apart from Germany (obviously), are there World Cup decorations all over the country there too? Here, houses and streets get more amdn more decorated each day, the green and yellow more and more used by people... Everyone is already organizing themselves to watch the games with friends and family...Brazil's first game is next Tuesday, and most offices are gonna close two hour before the game, for people to go home and watch it. I've already told my students that I WILL go to work, and I'll teach normally, stopping only at the time of the game, for students to watch it on the big TV they are putting up there.

Yup,
everything is decorated. I've never seen so many people flying our flag. To be honest: I've never seen that many flags since being in the USA shortly after 9/11.
One of the major roads I'm driving on to work also leads to our stadium and over a stretch of about 4K/2.5mls there are FIFA-flags every 50 meters on both sides of the street. We have public viewing areas with jumbo-screens at several locations all over town.
In my company two large conference rooms have been converted into soccer-cinemas utilizing beamers and huge sceens normally used for professional presentations. We're even allowed to watch games on paid time, we just have to check with our superiors and have to assure that all work is done properly and on time.
All businesses have their windows decorated with soccer themes, all TV-stations are dominated by soccer. Other sports events like the Formula One race in Great Britain this weekend, the 24 hours of Le Mans next week, even the Tour de France have to struggle to gain attention.
