Gate #5 being thought of?

I live about a mile from where America would have gone. The locals were afraid of all the congestion and traffic the park would bring.

Now the same area is covered with about 50,000 houses, and the traffic is pretty much constant gridlock.

Good thing we preserved all this historic land. :hammer:

You beat me to that.

This was on battle where staying the course would have been smart.

But I guess subdivisions and Super WalMarts and car dealerships and strip centers are a much better fit to neigbor some of the most historic land in the eastern USofA than a theme park about history.

Wow...that's really painting with a wide brush.

You cover more territory when you take broad strokes ...

And I didn't mean the comment to be an indictment of fanboys/gals, but rather a simple statement/observation.

If most 'fans' on sites like this weren't bored with the current offerings at Disney's parks -- or even the places in general -- there wouldn't always be such a push for wanting another park.

Rest assured, if Disney had a fifth gate some people would immediately be looking for a sixth.

Clearly, Disney needs to maintain, update and plus the parks it already has ... if it does and people are still looking for another park ... well, then I'll chalk it up to the MTV ... I-pod ... X-Box ... whatever you want to call generation ... having the attention spans of turnips.

Hey, I like my Super Target. :p

I like mine too ... a lot.

But I like Disney Parks: Where Dreams Come True more.

Now ... WalMarts (super or otherwise) are a different matter. I'd love nothing better than to see every one closed tomorrow.

The issue was that they wanted to build on huge parts of battlefields that they still have not built on.

I'm sure the exact land issues could have been worked out (and would have if Frank Wells hadn't of died).

The main problem was a NIMBY 'tude by the bluebloods like Katherine Graham.

Agreed. I also think that part of the argument did not hold water as well. Many said that it would somehow cheapen the history. Anyone who has ever been to any historical site here knows that they have already done that with souvenir shot glasses and whatnot. If the land issues could have been worked out I would have liked to see it as well.

Disney + Civil War battlefield + American history never would have equalled a good thing. That was the fundamental problem, and rightly so. Disney never proved that they could handle American history intelligently---they seem to value entertainment over history (as would be expected).

So you want millions of Americans to lose their jobs because you hate Walmart?? To not like something is one thing(just don't go in there if you dont like it) its another to just wish a company that employees so many people(my mom,bro and stepmom all work for Walmart and I did too for 10 years)to go under is pretty sad.I work for Finish Line but I sure as heck don't want to see Champs or Foot Locker go under as competition is good for business and lord knows the way the economy is now we cant afford to have more people lose their jobs.Heck here in Indy thursday ATA airlines suddenly closed and 560 Hoosiers lost their jobs. Many of my friends lost their jobs that day so maybe you meant your comment as a joke when talking about Walmart. I guess it just irritated me.I will now get down off my soap box.

Disney would have had to depart from the usual happy ending type attitude for such a park because history is often dark and ugly. However, with the right consultants anything can be done. I agree that it would be extremely difficult to pull off in a classy way. After all, you can't have a Civil War dark ride. As far as handling history intelligently, I believe that most tourist attractions devoted to it do not do so either.

You can't really say it isn't true. A fifth gate will ALWAYS be thought about amongst the Imagineers. That DOES NOT mean it will ever see the light of day, but ideas will always be circulating. I doubt Disney would mention anything about a fifth park on a Travel Channel special though.

I've never been one to step foot in these types of threads but now I will. Yes there is TONS of land available around Walt Disney World for which to build and expand. at this time though....it would be totally financially inappropriate for them to do so.

Not quite.

Disney could definitely afford a park right now. Look at their rising attendance rates. Also, the recession will probably stop by early '09.

The "they have tons of land!!" statement is not true. According to the RCID comprehensive plan, there is only enough space for one major park. According to the plan
Reedy Creek Improvement District said:
Attendance growth and market forces are expected to justify the addition of a new major attraction during the
next ten years. Additional land will be needed for smaller-scale entertainment areas similar in size to River
Country or Typhoon Lagoon. Based on historical trends, it is projected that a new major theme park and up to
three minor theme parks will be added by 2008. Approximately 630 acres are projected to be required for
these uses. The Future Land Use Map provides the flexibility to accommodate this development by
designating sufficient land area for these uses.

Here's the picture:

If you can't see the legend, Green is recreation, black is conservation, brown is agriculture and yellow is undeveloped.

Here's another map:

The long and short: we don't have that much left.

Honestly, I hope they were hinting at adding another country to World Showcase, adding another land to Animal Kingdom and building something cool on the old 20K Leagues site. Because all of those things should happen before they think about building another park.

There are some big chunks of land in this photo (yellow) that are bigger than the area used for MK. I'd say there is still room according to this map. West of the MK is a suitable & marginally suitable large plot of land. Also just inside of Osceola County north of Wide World of Sports is a smaller piece but still as big as the Studios according to this map.

I still think they should add another water park at least to compensate for the number of guest rooms that are constantly being added to the property. Surely with that many people on the property the existing ones can get a little crowded.

I also would LOVE to see a live entertainment complex bringing in large Disney Broadway shows to the property. I realize that this may kill some of the hype in NY but some vacationers can only do 1 destination and I think building a complex of theatre houses at WDW might bring a little culture to people who may never get the chance. Just my thoughts.

I have a feeling that an idea comes up for a fifth gate at least once a week. And eventually one will be chosen and will become a reality, whether it's in WDW or on another piece of Disney property. WDW will recieve a fifth gate when Disney feels it can make money off of another park in Central FL. For all we know, that can be as soon as next year, or another 100 years.

No plans will be made before 2015... :lookaroun

I was just watching the Travel Channel and they had an hour-long special on WDW (one of many actually). At the end of the program they asked the question "What's next for Disney World?" A Disney official stated that "..although we can not give away any secrets just yet, there is plenty of room on the Walt Disney World property for us to build and we have many exciting things in developement." As they were talking about it they were showing imagineers at their computers with images of coasters and and an drawings of the Statue of Liberty. :veryconfu

I know, I know. Many say their will never be a 5th gate and I have pretty much agreed to this as well. And there are countless threads about rumors of a possible 5th gate but this was the first time I have ever heard and actual travel show, let alone a Disney official even mentioning it. Could there actually be a little truth behind it?

I know which one you were watching. I think the statue of Liberty possibly relates to Epcot, nothing that big.
