On the concept of Pepper's Ghost, I think that Disaster in USO does a great job wih a Christopher Walken projection and a live actor interacting with each other on the same stage.

It is a great effect. When we first saw it we thought it was a look alike it was so real.

Believe it or not, the first video "Pepper's Ghost" was at the Six flags Power Plant in Baltimore in 1983. All others were static objects or rear projection.

The show was a walk thru called "Circus of the Mysterious" (kind of like Dark's Carnival in "Something Wicked") A series of tents with wierd sideshows...One was this Leprechan that appeared. Very cute. the video matched a pile of gold coins so it looked like he took them when he vanished. Guests at the time were astonished (Baltimore remember). The other effect was really a breakthrough for the time. It was this creature inside of "Pandora's Box", and the monitor was on an animated arm so the image moved across the glass. Smoke spilt from the chest and the demon came out..Very convincing.

I dont know if you guys would consider this to be an inbetween element but I feel it really help bring MK to life is to allow the characters to roam more freely and perform for/with the guests, especially in FantasyLand. Who wouldn't want to see donald trying to steal the show away from mickey in real life? It is one thing to wait in a line to get a hug from Eeyore, it is a completely different, and much more endearing, thing for Eeyore to want to come up and give you a hug, or for some villain character to come up behind you and steal your mouse ears. Characters, be they "streetmosphere" at DHS or Mickey Mouse at MK, should be more than chained to one spot. I don't know if that has ever been the case but I seem to have some memory of this from my childhood.

Something I wonder about the current meet and greet system is its actual function. Is it a used as a way to increase capacity of the lands? or used as a "weenie" to draw guests to a certain area of the park?

That's how it was at one point in time, and I doubt it will ever return.

There are a few guests out there that would ruin interactions like this, which is why it is in the format you see now.

That is too bad. A few bad apples spoil everybody's fun. :( I wonder how they get away with it in DHS?

Characters do still roam. After hours you often see the fab 5 and Mary Poppins in Fantasyland and they ride on rides and there is no line to meet them. It is all spontanteous.

Am I the only one who thinks WDI needs a new logo?

You can see both the old and current logo in this Ad from 1986

Now check out the cover of Jeff Kurtti's book' Walt Disney's Imagineering Legends.

Am I the only one who thinks the design of Walt Disney and Imagineering would look great as the official logo?

No thank you. That makes Imagineering look kooky.

The WDI logo is great, it works on everything and turns heads whenever you see it in the parks.

And again, looks great on jackets.

 :D

Is this a Pepper's Ghost effect? Christopher Walken's image reflecting off glass?

It was mentioned on the pre-show for Alien Encounter that Skippy is actually hidden with mirrors and does not move up and down in the tubes as I assumed.

Is the disappearing Randall over at DCA's Monster's Inc ride a similar use of mirrors or is this done differently as well?

I agree with the need for a new logo, but am not a big fan of Kurtti's cover. I understand the need for brand identity, but the Walt Disney logotype + Division Name became far too ubiquitous and contrary to the ideas of a creative enterprise. Walt Disney Imagineering, being a less public division of the company, does not need to have the same degree of branding uniformity.

Although I do like the idea of having WDI lettering in the WED style...

Eddie, any idea on the story behind the name change? I have heard, I think it was Marty Sklar, during one of those television specials the story about annoyances from people finding WED Enterprises listed in the phone book and wanting to have their wedding planned. It seems much more like a nice story to tell than a real motivation.

I think it was a combination of that and the corporate re-structuring from Walt Disney Productions to the Walt Disney Company.

Yes it was. I came in just as the name was being changed in 1986 and still have a WED ID Card someplace. I recall an overall style guide being done when they changed the name to "Walt Disney Company" from "Walt Disney Productions". They wanted to use "Walt Disney" in front of all the divisions, like Walt Disney Home Video, WD Consumer Products etc, so WED didn't fit that mold. So "WED Imagineering" became "Walt Disney Imagineering" as the story goes. Walt didn't own WED anymore either. I like WDI as a name it was always fine to me because you didn't have to explain who you worked for! WED is nostalgic too. Although the logo looks inspired by the Herman Miller mark/logo, maker of the Eames Chairs. Of course, it's not the logo, it's what you're doing in the name of it that counts!
