Dumbo & Main Street Updates

The current Disney beignets are the most pathetic, cardboardy, dry, air-filled beignet imposters I’ve ever had the displeasure of purchasing, and I’ve given them a few chances. If you want beignets that actually tasty and closer to the real thing, pick some up from Ralph Brennan’s Jazz Kitchen in DTD. The difference is staggering.

Over at the site that shall be named, Micechat, they re speculating that the Main Street renovations might be the first to come of some additional changes to Main Steet/ the Hub in preparation for the crowds SWL will bring. Particularly, a WDW like redo of the hub. AKA removing trees/ planters for AstroTurf, improved crowd control and better firework viewing.

Not sure about what you all think, but I hate the sound of this.

They are not very creative. They think everything that happens at the Magic Kingdom has to happen eventually at Disneyland.

I would probably hate it too, but I don't think there is enough room to do anything like this at Disneyland.

Just a friendly reminder that this announcement about the work on Main Street is also a justification for them not running a parade for the next few months (though all implications are that entertainment wanted a hiatus and maintenance is taking advantage of it). Even if most guests aren't impacted by the closure of the Main Street Vehicles or the refurbishment work itself, there will be wider-reaching consequences

In the past, DL has run alternative entertainment during extended parade downtimes and maintenance work along the parade route. During the track work in 2011 they had the "Family Fun Weekends" where a variety of themed shows were presented in the Festival Arena and New Orleans Square for the small springtime holidays. For the Main Street repaving in 2004 they presented some small cavalcades that ran from the small world gate to the hub, where they completed a full lap and headed back where they came from. There's been no indication they're making any effort to fill the entertainment void this time around

Yeah, the hub is significantly smaller here. The only thing they could do is remove the trees in front of the Plaza in and Jolly Holiday and turf those in...unless they removed the rocks in front of Tomorrowland and filled in the "moat" that runs between Fantasy Faire and Adventureland. That would suck, majorly.

I'd be on board, especially if they continue to have virtually no restrictions on the number of daily admissions. The Hub and Main Street as they are are frequently choke points and not adequate for moving 21st century Disneyland crowds.

Well, if anyone at Disney cares anymore ("Which I doubt," said Eeyore), I would hope they'd see that More Charm/Fewer People is better for the park's staying power than Less Charm/More People. Oh, who am I kidding?!?! In all seriousness, if they go through with a plan like that kind of hub redesign, and then just keep applying that kind of philosophy, pretty soon we all wind up with a DL that's as plastic-looking and soulless as all the parodies of the park portray it as--Like some kind of gigantic Fischer Price shell with no history, no detail and no depth. Okay, now switching off Alarmist-Mode.

The villain in all this is the continuation of the overblown Castle-centric fireworks. The park was never designed to host that many viewers in such a small area.

Here's what I'm in favor of, just in case I ever become King of the Universe: Fewer people admitted. No APs. Higher Admission Prices. Better Experience. Make and keep DL the Crown Jewel of all theme parks on Earth. Make it worth the money. Like it used to be (not literally, but like in the days when you could mosey into the park, not go on any rides, and STILL get more than your money's worth in sheer enjoyment.)

And then I woke up.

Sure I guess if they don’t want to address crowds, I guess the solution is to just to raze all of the atmosphere. I would still rather deal with the crowds though. I’m not at that point yet, especially because i Cherry pick my days at the park effectively. But TBH I’ll never be at that point. I would demand they Come up with a solution for crowds before they destroy atmosphere. As an AP, I would be willing to sacrifice days for quality visits. I’ve been a proponent for APs with capped visits for years. With that said, I’m not sure that this is the entire solution, but it would be a great start. Disneyland is still a huge tourist destination afterall. Not to mention the millions So Cal locals who are NOT APs.

Thats nice for you, but that shouldn't be the way DLR should work IMO. Why should there only be a handful of days when the parks are manageable while the rest are mobbed?

The issue they are only starting to address is in-fill. They keep shoehorning new attractions into the existing landscape and choking traffic flow. This started back in the early '60s with Tiki Room and that horrible dogleg at the exits of Tiki, Oasis, and Jungle Cruise. After they built the Pirate Bridge in the '70s to make NO Sq. less landlocked, they turned around and squeezed in Indy and took away the side queue from Pirates, so now the extended queue goes all the way down to Mansion. They keep choking Tomorrowland, which now has far less walkway around TL Terrace and Autopia. Plonking Asto-Orbiter in the entrance and extending the footprint of the Buzz and Star Tours entrances only clogged things more.

Splash encroaches on the Mansion exit and prevents building a decent gift shop and better handicapped access at the HM exit. Rumor is they are worried about traffic from Adventureland to Critter Country for SWL/GE and will reduce the Fan! viewing terraces. Closing off the outdoor seating for Riverbelle cuts off the bypass walkway for Fan!. And they've shortened the ROA and encroached on the waterway with the new access pass to SWL/GE on the water side of Hungry Bear.

Disneyland has gone from a true park-like landscape to an urban hardscape. The good news is that they have made a slight improvement to Adventureland, other than the mess that is the approach to Indy. One hopes they will remove Astro-Orbiter and restore the grand approach to Tomorrowland (and not just add fireworks viewing).

Turning what is essentially an iconic park with shade and actual places to sit into the bland concrete wasteland that is the MK hub. Yeah, no thanks.

Really odd seeing all of Main Street covered like this. It would've taken longer, but I'm surprised they didn't do it in sections so they could have more of it open at a time.

That would also be more expensive and mean more down time for Main Street activities and parades.
