Draining the Moat

That reminds me.... the photos show nothing of the old Swan Boats guide rails by the castle. Which means they are gone. Which means underwater work / draining the moat was done before to achieve this. Which may mean any other Swan Boat infrastructure is also gone. Which means these pipes may be for something else.

That`s a lot of assumptions!
I am pretty sure the moat has been drained a few times over the years for various maintenance tasks. I seem to remember seeing it empty MANY years ago and noticed what I assumed was the swan boat guide infrastructure gone 'out front' but seemed to still be in place away from the hub as the most recent pictures suggest. I think the A land bridge was where I found it started / stopped.

Does anyone know when the moat will be refilled? We are going down in March 10-17 and would hope that it might be refilled by then. I am already a little upset about the construction wall/walls that they are going to be up around the front of the castle. It will be my childs first trip to Disney and I hope that the pictures of her walking to the castle for the first time don't have huge walls going half way up the castle. Anyways any addition info about how high up these walls may go and when the moat will be refilled would be great!

And I did look at http://www.wdwmagic.com/Attractions...Cinderella-Castle-ready-for-refurbishment.htm

Is the wall/scrim going to cover the whole front or just the sides toward the moat? Thanks in advance!

I imagine the screens that will soon cover the front of the castle will be painted to almost match the castle perfectly. From far away, a photo would still probably look decent. I don't know how long this refurb is scheduled to last, though.

Don't worry, it will be magical either way - I promise!

Your post sounds like dialogue from the TV show "House". If/then.....if/then. :)

Haven't read the whole thread (and won't) but I can tell you the Swan Boat guides still exist under the Treehouse area ... they're very obvious if you know where to look ... had a conversation with a pair of CMs who (shockingly) knew all about them and actually had accurate info on the history of them and the area!

I saw very little trash in the moats Wednesday. They must have cleaned up before then. But I'm now back home in middle GA and I'd rather be back with the drained moats. :(

It could be for dozens of reasons.

Just off the top of my head, if they had to run a new circuit to some kiosks, running it in the moat might be the easiest way to do path create.

Maybe there are walker ducts with handholds from the utilidors nearby, maybe not.

If there is anything new that requires a path, dropping it in the moat is an easy and low cost way to do it.

Just doesn't seem like a very smart thing to do, as water and electricity don't mix, and water will find a way into conduit. Trust me...

Just came back from MK a couple of hours ago and was going to report about this and a few other things. It's pretty neat to look into the nearly empty moat, truthfully. There are a lot of pennies and whatnot laying around, and you can vaguely see where the tracks used to be in the old swan boat ride (or at least that's what I thought I saw, anyway).

Submarine cable

Pressurized air core PIC.

I used to be in charge of the subsurface construction department for all of NJ

My last major project before I moved to different pastures had my crews boring casings under the Passaic River for interoffice trunking cables. Slightly more technical than the WDW moat :)

Being a longtime firefighter, I've had plenty of experience with "trash" that people dump in waterways. We get called out to drag for bodies when people are assumed to be lost/drowned. Sadly, this does happen and will sometimes be out there for 12+hours dragging with hooks and prodding with polls trying for a recovery.

Being a gruesome job to begin with, when you actually hook "something" you almost don't want to pull it up but alast, you have a job to do. Luckily, I haven't hooked what we were looking for, but instead have found all kinds of wonderful stuff that people throw away in major waterways.

I've pulled up window air conditioning units, bicycles, lawn chairs, a couch, a Hard Rock Cafe leather jacket, dozens of tires, chains, car bumpers, a car door, radiators, televisions, and a sewing machine!

People will throw away ANYTHING if they can get away with it. MK is lucky that people can only carry in and hide small stuff!

You would be surprised at what may not be thrown in the water, but migrating out of the ground.

Along the banks of a river by my house used to be a landfill, as well many places "back in the day".

We have a pretty active environmental group around here that makes sure there is no dumping going on. However stuff from the old landfill continues to migrate out of the ground and into the water. Every spring they have a clean up day, where you go out in boats with hooks and drag garbage back to the dumpsters.

Interesting theories. I defer to your knowledge.

It does seem like a lazy way to run cable at the MK though.
