It's BS. Disney wouldn't be stupid enough to have a possibly limited contract on their park's central landmark. The reality is that the hat went up in celebration of Walt's 100th birthday, but somehow everyone forgot (or was too lazy) to take it down once it was over. :veryconfu

Here's what I heard about the hat. I heard the contract for the Chinese theatre was up and they didn't wanna renew their contract. So for it to stay it could not be the landmark so Disney had to construct something to block the theatre, the birth of BAH. Now this could be complete bull but it's what I heard

That Tower has such a weird spot...It looks like it's trying to peak above the buildings, not tower above them.
That`s the beauty of it - it has its own street, so does look just a part of the wider picture. When seen from other angles it does looks like the massive building that it is. It adds a further layer of depth to the placemaking. Plus, this design has the bulk of the show building in front of the tower as opposed to behind it like in Orlando, making the whole building more `stepped` in appearence and thus the actual tower appear further away. Seen from the rear (you can walk around it in WDSP) you get a sense of just how big the thing is. To save this thread going totoally off topic I`ve also found the hat and placemaking photo I thought I didn`t take:

A couple of years ago, there was a lamp that was a MGM watertower...any remmeber this and might know how to obtain one. I REALLY dopped the ball when I did not order one when it first came out!

Yeah, the Sound Stage restaurant is probably what I remember being Aladdin themed. I remember in the mid 90s when they had a "commercial" being filmed. They had this huge Hercules parade (it had just come out) and had a whole group of us acting as the "crowd" and cheering wildly as the floats went by. I remember being really excited seeing a film crew, etc as they had the parade go by, reverse, and go by again. This took place between Monster Sound Show and the Chinese Theater.. the road that runs along those bathrooms.

Anyways, I was imagining seeing myself (or at least the scene) of it on TV. A few weeks after our trip they were running a promotion and advertising Hercules and WDW. They showed a 2 second clip of a zoomed in shot of Hercules on the top of a large float.. not even a shot of a crowd or anything else. That's when I realized they probably didn't even have film in those cameras - and most of that was part of the "show."

I also remember the NYC streets having actors walking around. I remember seeing "street thugs" carrying a parking meter over their shoulder, a cop with a banana in his gun holster, and other random people. I seem to recall this being a night time street party where they played music and the characters danced, etc. It was a lot of fun and it drew a lot of people to the back of the park. For having all of that area, they don't really do much with it anymore.. events wise. Or maybe just not during my trips?
