The US government was collecting information on all of your phone calls. How is that not something we consider trivial? You may not immediately grasp why your shopping at MouseGear is valuable but it very much is valuable for any number of purposes.
The problem isn't what you think would be worth hiding. They can have that information of mine.
Dear US Government,
You have my permission to listen to all of my phone calls, read all of my emails, collect as much data about me as you want, etc. Why am I freely giving you this permission? Because I'm not trying to hide anything! If you want to be stupid and waste your time watching me then you are not doing your jobs.
The problem isn't what you think would be worth hiding.
At least they are asking permission??
Everyone here is being tracked with everything we do from grocery shopping to a beach trip. Every credit card and phone gps knows exactly where you are and what your doing. Let's not forget cameras on every corner and street. Unless we use cash and are basically off the grid, that's the world we live in. Its totally insane anymore.
I went to the doctors 3 weeks ago for a check up and they asked for my insurance card and drivers license. I said why do you need my license? They said they just want to make a copy and keep it in my records. I said no, I don't want that floating around in the cloud. I told them I'll show it to them to prove its me but that's it. She called a supervisor over and they were lost on how to proceed. They said," everyone hands it over, it's our policy". I said I'll find another doctor.
Sounds like I'm a conspiracy nut but every day someone is getting hacked so I try and not let all my info get out there.
As for Disney, I'm surprised it took this long.
Exactly -
And for the 'I have nothing to hide' crowd I recommend the book 'Three Felonies a Day' which is the modern extension of Cardinal Richelieu's famous comment "Give me six lines written by the most honest man alive and I will find something to hang him with' and in that context he meant the death penalty.
As to camera's in your homes do you have a NannyCam or PetCam. Well the Police in the US are about to get access to ALL CAMERAS WITHOUT A WARRANT.

We are definitely heading to a place none of us really want to be.
Computer scientists have created a way of letting law enforcement tap any camera that isn’t password protected so they can determine where to send help or how to respond to a crime.
The Visual Analytics Law Enforcement Toolkit superimposes the rate and location of crimes and the location of police surveillance cameras. CAM2 reveals the location and orientation of public network cameras, like the one outside your apartment.
Granted, the system does not tap private feeds, nor does it peer into private spaces like someone’s home.
At a recent annual checkup, I was asked to supply my SSN. Uhhhhhh no way.

You may be right, however, I am a very cynical person (you probably hadn't noticed). So I'll have to ask you to give us one example about what I buy at MouseGear could be of any interest to anyone in the government. Unless, of course, they were just interested in being bored to death. To extend the intentions of the government into a business practice at Walt Disney World is a bit of a stretch. Remember, sometimes a cigar is just a cigar. The US government was collecting information on all of your phone calls. How is that not something we consider trivial? 2 significant data mining operations began operation in the same week. Coincidence, probably but maybe???You're trying to tell me that you think the US Government cares that I went to Mousegears?

Very detailed profiles can be built using a person's shopping habits. That is the whole reason there is a market to purchase such data and why Disney would invest billions to better gather such data. Profiles on spending habits could be helpful in financial investigations. Maybe you spent a little too much on souvenirs this time around and now the IRS or your state department of revenue is going to start turning your life upside down to find out what you may be hiding. You may be right, however, I am a very cynical person (you probably hadn't noticed). Except that Disney would be a idiots to tell others what their customers are buying. Friendly competition is one thing, but, telling your competition what your customers buy would be insane. As far as I can tell Disney does a huge amount of mining, but, it is for their own benefit, not to benefit others in the same business. I have never seen anything, not generated by Disney, show up online that could even be remotely connected to them selling information only using the information they accumulated. Facebook, on the other hand has picked up on everything I have ever said. Last year I mentioned to friends on Facebook that I had been diagnosed with Prostate Cancer. Want to guess what shows up on my computer every day. If you guessed, Prostate treatments, one after the other, congratulations. Course that could be age too, but, I was old before last summer and never saw those ads.Very detailed profiles can be built using a person's shopping habits. And now, as a public service, I have compiled some ACTUAL creepy survey questions.
"Using MyMagic+, we tracked your last restroom break and analyzed the contents; would you like to know if we suggest a prostate exam?"
"So, that's what you and the missus get up to in the bedroom on vacation, eh?"
"Have you heard of the Great Old Ones?"
