Creepy New Survey Question....

Do realize all this data is being mined by the NSA. Pictures of you and your family along with other info is now in a NSA data base because you willing used MB's. It's not like a cell phone where at least the NSA tries to pretend they aren't listening in on everything. Many people think it is harmless but way to much info on people is being built up. You are right if you are a nobody who leads a quite life you will be fine. The problem is all this info can be used as a weapon against political opponents, business rivals etc. etc. You don't think congressmen would love to get this kind of info on any person who could possible stop them from doing whatever they feel like? The whole data base on you not just a single event. It's alos great to figure out what kind of bribe would work the best on someone if needed.

Never mind are sweet God fearing political representatives are pure as the driven snow and would never do something shady.

... I'm trying to think what sort of political leverage could be gained from learning that Congressman Joe Strawman used one of his Fastpass selections on the Cinderella/ Rapunzel meet & greet.

It would not be so bad if there was a firewall around the data and legal protections that it could ONLY be used to interdict a terrorist and/or hostile state actions and could not be used for prosecuting 'normal' criminal cases. But in many states same sex love is STILL illegal as well as sex between unmarried persons. So emails could be used to prosecute these people under our current state laws.

Great leverage if it turned out that Congressman Joe Strawman took his Mistress and her kids to the Cinderella/Rapunzel M&G instead of HIS wife and kids.

That's great that you feel that way, and that's your right to do so. Thankfully not everyone subscribes to that logic. I feel my right to a reasonable amount of privacy is worth at least a modicum of open discourse, so I'm not as quick to throw in the towel on this one.

If it was just as simple and black and white as "if you're not doing anything wrong, you don't have anything to hide" then we wouldn't have ever needed constitutional protections of our civil liberties in the first place.

Now to bring this back to the original topic, as far as corporations go, in this case TWDC, I think public debate regarding privacy concerns is healthy and beneficial to us all. I hope that we as a society don't ever become so lazy that we just roll over without even questioning whether or not the business practices of a global corporation are ethical just because we don't have anything to hide.

I'm lazy? Ok, got it.

That attitude it exactly what is wrong with this country. Everyone is so entitled anymore. The idea that a company is tracking your purchases within their company is so insignificant that it seems insane that people can give even a half a crap about it. It doesn't hurt you, it doesn't affect you, it doesn't even infringe on your ultra super duper top secret private life. "Oh my God. Disney just found out that I bought two pens at The World of Disney store." = privacy/life ruined.

I hardly think the NSA is tapping into the Disney Magic Band system for "valuable" info on a routine basis.

There are plenty of insights via credit card and phone records to track terrorist activities. Knowing what time someone has. FP for It's A Small World is not going to be helpful in determining their motives or future terrorist aspirations.

I suppose if you were already tracking someone whom you KNEW was a terrorist, whom was planning an attack on WDW, the scheduled rides might be a helpful indicator, but it's highly doubtful.

Magic Bands do provide plenty of intelligence gathering opportunities, but it is consumer behavioral intelligence to WDW, not actionable Intel to the NSA.

I'm a conservative as they come and want the NSA to stop snooping on innocent Americans as it is a violation of several of our freedoms defined within the bill of rights, but I in no way am fearful of anything worthwhile being gleaned from my next trip to WDW. Fear baiting is just that, there are serious reasons to be afraid of the power of an overreaching government. This is not one of those reasons.

So based on my experience and what i do for a living I think everyone here would be surprised at how little Disney can track you with your Magic band and how much they can track you with your phone. The MB is mostly a near field device that has to be put close to a reader to get any data. They can track your movement by hitting readers and POS devices throughout the park. Where I think a lot of the data is being mined from is from those who have MMX and use it extensively in the parks. There is tech out there that can connect with a wireless device (your phone with MMX) and find your location, movement habits, dwell time, etc. When you accept the terms and conditions of the MMX software I am sure it says something in there about tracking or data mining (way to lazy to dig for it ). I would not be surprised in the next year or two that you will start seeing directed movement of the visitors by the MMX app. FOr example the app would be able to tell you that there is a short line at the mine train and you should go there now based on your location or maybe give you a special deal (haha mickey giving deals) on stuffed animals. It's pretty crazy what is out there and I am pretty sure that while they may not openly talk about it there is a lot more behind the curtain that everyone things. Again, just my opinion based on my experience in the field. I will be living there in Orlando shortly and will be performing my own reconnaissance as soon as i can. ;)

The long range capabilities of the MagicBands are noted in their FCC filing. Even the cards have greater range than assumed as Disney had to adjust their terms of use to note that they could be picked up without direct contact but would not be.

Ahh I wasn't aware of that in the filing. See thats me not reading again. The MBs aren't passive devices so the range could be increased when needed.

At no point did I call you lazy. My comment was about my fear for society in general. My apologies if it read differently.

There is a lot of discussion regarding privacy, especially lately. Again, if you feel that people interested in having these discussions are entitled and that the topic is insignificant, that's fine. Those who feel otherwise will continue the public discourse. There are also those who must have these discussions as part of their job and may disagree with your broad assessment of the issues.

Took an in park survey last week, at the end of the survey they asked if it was ok to tap my magic band and link it to the survey..seems like this is the direction they are going

I understand people feel differently than I do. I am just trying to understand how some of these people draw a connecting line between Disney's data collection and a totalitarian society coming about. The whole "It's a slippery slope from data mining to Big Brother invading your homes." argument is silly and has been spewed forth constantly. My own father is one of those people. He spends 30 minutes watching FOX News and walks away from the TV yelling a griping about how the government is spying on our phone conversations, spying on us through webcams, and that we are mere months from Armageddon and the end of life as we know it. It's a flipping Disney survey and data collection. They are not stealing souls. Allowing this data collection is not sacrificing your ideals. It is just internal data Disney uses. If people are that worried about their data getting out then they need to get off the PC, toss their phones out a window, and give up all credit cards. I don't care what ad blockers they have, whether they are behind a VPN, etc. Those companies are still mining the h**l outta people for data. Oh, that person that put a tic mark in the box denying permission for that? Oh, well then let me tell you just how naive people really are. LOL It is just shopping and spending habits data. Not social security numbers or cameras in your homes. But go ahead... tell me more about the slippery slope.

I feel like I am about to see a bunch of people dressed like Native Americans running past me carrying boxes of tea or something.
