You’re probably right. I have to wonder if they still have to pay some kind of royalty to their own songwriters, even if Disney owns the music itself.
Depends on the individual contracts.
In many cases, a royalty fee is collected and distributed to both the owner of the audio recording rights as well as the songwriter rights.
So for example, say a song like ‘On The Road Again’ by Willie Nelson.
The record company that owns the audio recording rights will be paid, as well as Mr. Nelson if he still owns the song writing rights.
