Could it Be? (EO returning to EPCOT)

I certainly hope Captain EO doesn't return this was a 80's thing not something for today. Move forward not backward.

Really?:lookaroun:wave:

Yea, I really don't think that one is gonna happen. But that's just a personal opinion.

And just as the JC refurb/overhaul, I will believe nothing until it's actually announced. Both have been pushed back so many times, I've given up. I don't care until they announce it. And even then, I still won't believe it until it opens.

-If you are hoping for an Imagination refurb.....don't root for EO to come. EO coming to Epcot would most likely delay a refurb of Imagination for several years.

What does it matter? If not EO, they'll find some other reason to delay it for several years.

I absolutely love your post in response to mine. I so agree with so much of what you write below. It's just that my conclusion is a bit different from the one you reach. So ... on to some thoughts:

God forbid they actually do something that pleases the FANS. I'm sick and tired of every single thing done at the parks being aimed at the general guest who cares nothing about the parks and only goes once every 5 or 10 years. You take away things like Alien Encounter and The Timekeeper (using examples that hit close to home) and those guests don't care if they're replacements are average (MILF) or just horrible (SGE). They have no vested interest.

I absolutely believe Disney should try and please their fans. That's just plain smart business and common sense. BUT ... you assume all fans think the same way or want the same things. I don't want tired 1980s 3D flicks tossed into the parks as cheap fixes or quick ways to prop up attendance and sell LE crap merchandise. That IS what bringing something like EO back to DL does.

And you can't ignore the wants/needs of your once in 5-10 years guest either.

You need to keep the parks fresh and updated to attract and please a wide a net of guests as possible ... from rabid fanbois to DVCers to locals to returning guests to onetimers.

New Disney quality experiences may not please everyone (nothing will), but if you aim to provide the highest quality, cutting edge family entertainment, chances are you'll succeed in pleasing far more guests. Period.

Fans care about that 1972-era parade because it is one of the best things Disney has ever done, IMO. They care about retro merchandise because it reminds them of a time when they were either first introduced to the parks or it reminds them of a time when the parks were better than they are today.

I don't agree that MSEP is one of the best things Disney has ever done, but I do believe it is the best night parade ever presented in the USA.

But a quote like the above shows exactly why moves like this are so bad, so boneheaded and, sadly, shows an acceptance by fans to accept anything.

I've been saying that Disney's parks have been in a cycle of Walmarting since the late 1990s. Apparently, many fans are starting to agree (a lot of the general public too judging by comments I've heard and read).

But wanting old attractions/parades back is simply playing right into the Walmarting. It's saying 'OK, Disney. You don't have to invest and build amazing new attractions, update old ones and offer a continual slate of new and changing and seasonal entertainment. Just give us an old favorite and some retro EPCOT tees and we'll be happy'.

That isn't the way to get Disney back to being the Disney I expect.

The fundamental flaw in the way the business is being run now is that quality isn't as important as it used to be. In the 1990's if an attraction was being replaced, you expected the replacement to be a better attraction. Nowadays it is a success when a replacement isn't horrible. To paraphrase Cranium Command, they've had some successes to go along with those failures, but it is not the same.

Disney was built on being the best at everything they attempted.

Quality isn't as important as once was. Hell, it isn't as important as it was 10-15 years ago.

But returning things like EO and MSEP just showcases that fact, it doesn't make it better because some folks like those things. I liked EO and I loved MSEP, but they don't belong in a park in 2010.

I think the parks fanbase (and to a larger extent myself) are also sick and tired of EVERY SINGLE new addition to the parks being something that is pre-existing character based. At least EO was an ORIGINAL story that was park specific. Even as a child I owned Figment, Big Al, and Fuzzball (from EO) plushes more that those of the Fab 5. There is something special to me about characters that only exist in the parks. And that is something that is sadly becoming a thing of the past.

Yes. It is. But when fanbois defend the tooning of the parks (as many do) that just helps further The Weatherman's agenda ... and that is to tie in as many things as possible to franchises and characters.

The bottom line, IMO, people weren't craving for retro merchandise in the 1990's because the attractions being built during that era didn't make you starve for a better time. If that were the case now, maybe I won't look forward to walking into MouseGear and buying every "EPCOT Center" shirt I see as being one of the MAJOR highlights of a yearly WDW trip.

I can appreciate the longing for better times and better things. That's largely what I 'rant' about here.

But I'd suggest that if buying a retro tee is a MAJOR highlight of a WDW trip that you really should be spending your vacation money and your time, which is priceless, elsewhere. And I am very serious.

Typical Day at TDO

Late March 2010.........

TDO: What are the figures?

TDA: Favorable....merchandise is up, crowds spiked during college spring break and remain stready.

TDO: How much did it cost to bring back the film?

TDA: $******

TDO: *flips through bonus cheques to be mailed out in December 2010*

TDO: Well, here's what we can do....we'll take the CM staffing HISTA and send them outdoors.

TDA: Outdoors?

TDO: Yeah, we're just not going to be able to afford it.

TDA: You people make more money per year than we do, what's the problem.

TDO: *looks back at list of bonus cheques*

TDO: We'll close HISTA, and bring a portable cart and play captain EO outside in the evening so guests can see it, and we'll have the CM outdoors to make sure they are behaving.

TDA: Ok?

TDO: We'll save money by turning off all the electricity in the HISTA theater, but I'm afraid we'll have to send one of our interns out to a local GoodWill to pick up a TV and Laserdisc player.

TDA: What?!

TDO: Yeah.....money is funny isn't it?

If I could go to Tokyo Disneyland/Disney Sea or Disneyland Paris or even Disneyland Resort as easy or cheap as I could WDW, then I would. We still have a fantastic time at WDW, but yes it is very exciting when Disney offers merchandise that I'm personally interested in as a fan. Fans and AP'ers are the red headed step children to those that run WDW and when we get a bone thrown our way, it is very nice.

And if I thought that they were anywhere close to being ready to refurb the entire Imagination pavilion, I wouldn't mind at all if they decided to not bring EO in and I'm even a big HISTA fan. When you get burned so many times by your favorites being replaced with something that isn't even in the same ball park as what it replaced, you do tend to be overprotective of certain things and that is a fault of my own.

But I still think bringing back EO will please a lot of fans, get national attention for any resort it is brought to, and will be a nice change for a short period of time.

I happen to like both of those attractions. So saying they are average or horrible is just your opinion. I think this is the difference between Walt Disney World and Disneyland. Where Disneyland seems to be geared more towards Locals and Disney World more towrds the average guest that may only come once every couple of years.

I just skimmed the thread, so I'm sorry if this has been said:
-EO is being considered for Epcot. Considered, that is all. They are going to wait and see how it does at DL as far as guest response, merch sales, etc.

-The announcement that was mentioned in the OP is not going to be related to WDW at all.

-If you are hoping for an Imagination refurb.....don't root for EO to come. EO coming to Epcot would most likely delay a refurb of Imagination for several years.

Edit: Second point above. See EE's post.
Boo! EO Boo!

Seriously, if thats what it takes to get the Imagination refurb then I'm down with not wanting EO.
