I just read this on Mouse Planet's weekly WDW update:

Captain EO-to-Epcot rumors false, sources say

MousePlanet's Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix reports:
The Disneyland Resort promised "On Monday, we'll be making a special Captain EO announcement on Twitter," which has set of a flurry of speculation that the film may also return to Epcot park in Walt Disney World, where it was shown from 1986 - 1994. Sources have told MousePlanet that there really are no plans to bring EO back to Epcot at this time, and that the announcement has nothing to do with Walt Disney World. We'll update this article after the big announcement is made public.

I certainly have mixed feelings about this whole thing. On one hand EO had it's day and I think it is a dated attraction to bring back even as a tribute to Jackson. Then on the other hand it'd be nice to see it again in its original setting for a limited time and then maybe while EO is being shown they can make an entirely new experience and have it ready to go by the time EO is shut down.

I'm going to stick with not bringing it back though because I'm tired of seeing Epcot stuck in the past and present. Future World needs to stick to future ideas, theories, prototypes, etc. No sense in furthering the notion that imagination is dead by bringing an OLD attraction back to life.

Showpass? Sounds like a great idea! No longer waiting 45 minutes before hand for things like FotLK and FNtM would be amazing!

Sweatshirt moms rejoice!

Why do I get the feeling that this will get abused just as much (if not more than) fastpass? Oh Disney, why have you turned me into such a cynical adventurer?

I have no problem with EO coming to the Magic Eye theater. Hopefully it just brings a total pavillion makeover that much closer to fruition.

God forbid they actually do something that pleases the FANS. I'm sick and tired of every single thing done at the parks being aimed at the general guest who cares nothing about the parks and only goes once every 5 or 10 years. You take away things like Alien Encounter and The Timekeeper (using examples that hit close to home) and those guests don't care if they're replacements are average (MILF) or just horrible (SGE). They have no vested interest.

Fans care about that 1972-era parade because it is one of the best things Disney has ever done, IMO. They care about retro merchandise because it reminds them of a time when they were either first introduced to the parks or it reminds them of a time when the parks were better than they are today.

The fundamental flaw in the way the business is being run now is that quality isn't as important as it used to be. In the 1990's if an attraction was being replaced, you expected the replacement to be a better attraction. Nowadays it is a success when a replacement isn't horrible. To paraphrase Cranium Command, they've had some successes to go along with those failures, but it is not the same.

I think the parks fanbase (and to a larger extent myself) are also sick and tired of EVERY SINGLE new addition to the parks being something that is pre-existing character based. At least EO was an ORIGINAL story that was park specific. Even as a child I owned Figment, Big Al, and Fuzzball (from EO) plushes more that those of the Fab 5. There is something special to me about characters that only exist in the parks. And that is something that is sadly becoming a thing of the past.

The bottom line, IMO, people weren't craving for retro merchandise in the 1990's because the attractions being built during that era didn't make you starve for a better time. If that were the case now, maybe I won't look forward to walking into MouseGear and buying every "EPCOT Center" shirt I see as being one of the MAJOR highlights of a yearly WDW trip.

VERY WELL SAID!

I can see it as a hit at DL where the annual passholders will flock in for their nostalgia fix. But keep it out of FL .

Im tired of hearing that excuse....that is part of the reason that DLR is cruising along with new shows, new parades, new fireworks, new everything... because of this tired old excuse. I for one am a WDW Local AP holder and I feel the same way as "apparently" many of the DL Locals feel... and trust me there are a LOT more WDW Locals than we are given credit for. I live 2 hours and 20 minutes away...easy interstate travel....Im all the way down near Punta Gorda in Charlotte County, Florida and I AM LOCAL TO WDW!

It's not an excuse though, Disneyland Resort passholders do flock to the parks for every new thing. They come in droves. Maybe Walt Disney World Resort passholders should start doing the same thng.

It's a cold reality. DL's bread and butter is local AP holders. WDW's is tourists. AP holders will turn out for minor tweaks and limited engangements. Tourists just want to hit all the big attractions once or twice in a liftime.

As a result, DL has to keep things fresh or risk losing its audience. WDW can afford to get stale and tourists will still line up at the gates cause it's new to most of them.

At DL, Eo could provide a boost in attendance. At WDW, it's unlikely it would have a significant impact on attendance. Whether you think it's a neat idea or a terrible one, I just don't see how it makes much business sense in FL.

Hearing through the grapevine and Twitter that the announcement is on Merch?

If so...off to eBay I go. :D

Well that's not gonna happen anytime soon.

Besides, I disagree. There's plenty of space in the existing ride space, especially if they use all the space that isn't currently used. I'd rather have a new 3-D show. There's really no need to take away an offering from the park.

Really?:lookaroun:wave:

I just skimmed the thread, so I'm sorry if this has been said:
-EO is being considered for Epcot. Considered, that is all. They are going to wait and see how it does at DL as far as guest response, merch sales, etc.

-The announcement that was mentioned in the OP is not going to be related to WDW at all.

-If you are hoping for an Imagination refurb.....don't root for EO to come. EO coming to Epcot would most likely delay a refurb of Imagination for several years.

Edit: Second point above. See EE's post.

I've said it one every Eo thread so far. Disney should be moving forward, not back.

I can see it as a hit at DL where the annual passholders will flock in for their nostalgia fix. But keep it out of FL and definitely out of Future World! We want a full refurb, not a quick fix.

As Kodos said in Treehouse of Horror VII "I say, we must move forward, not backward, upward not forward, and always twirling, twirling, twirling towards freedom."

That's exactly what I was afraid of. There seriously needs to be an uproar about this. Just the whole this is ridiculous.
