Two Bald Eagles have just been installed at the Contemporary. Sorry, not real ones (although real Bald Eagles have been spotted on property). These Contemporary Bald Eagles are actually life-sized kites affixed to looong poles that jet out from the 14th floor on the North & South sides of the main tower. And why would Disney do this? Well it turns out that the big black birds (crows or hawks, I don't know) that have been calling the Contemporary home are terrified of Bald Eagles. I believe the problem got much worse with the open floors of Bay Lake Tower construction - but now that all the floors are closed in, the crows have stuck around. I am not certain, but birds may always have been a problem at the Contemporary. These birds create quite a mess for the housekeeping staff on a daily basis, what they leave behind is a health hazard, and not to mention in some cultures crows are a sign of death. Now how do we all feel about this? I quite like these kites. Aside from being blatantly out-of-place, they are cool to look at as they are surprisingly realistic when the wind catches them.. and its fun to watch the crows bullet off their perches as soon as they realize the threat.
