AVATAR land - the specifics

My DD just asked a question and I thought someone would answer. (sorry if the answer has already been given, too lazy to look)
Comparing the new lands: Pandora, Star Wars, Toy Story. What are the physical size (area), ride numbers for the new lands?
With the generation change it looks to me that DHS may over take MK once SWL and TSL are opened.

Physical size isn't a full story since much of what may be included is inaccessible buildings and backstage areas etc. With that said here are some numbers I have seen used commonly (although some have been reported differently as well):

Pandora 11-12 acres (2 rides)
Toy Story Land 11 acres (2 (new) rides)
Star Wars 14 acres (2 rides)

I don't see Hollywood Studios taking over MK by any means.

What is your basis for that? Wait times have been pretty consistently around 200 on most nice days, lower when it storms.
We were there last week and every time we were out I looked. It was more consistently in the 100-150 range when we were there. I don't think I saw it ever go above 150 when I looked.

It was a guess based on opening weekend. The disparity in wait times between the two attractions was less during the first week. It's also possible that more people are realizing that Na'vi River Journey is a C-ticket and are unwilling to wait 2+ hours for it. Having said that, when a theater goes down in Flight of Passage the standby line crawls to a standstill. When all four are operating it moves pretty well.

It's definitely highend Christie Laser projection. Likely at least 120 FPS because of 3D (60FPS each eye). Frame rates higher than that are possible but at a certain point detract from the experience rather than add. Brightness largely depends on the specific projector, video standard, and amount of projectors which I can't speak directly to other than that the people that do Disney projects know what they're doing and are willing to pay far more for better quality projection and sound equipment than Universal is. Knowing that James Cameron is involved it seems likely they will use the best tech they can get - which would be Dolby-vision or some other HDR color tech which can get extremely bright compared to standard color space and projection. There are experimental technologies that allow for even more brightness but I don't think any of them are ready for prime time.

The projectors intended for Flight of Passage aren't ready yet. The ride will open with great looking Christie 4X4K rigs, but that's supposed to be swapped out later on for something more simple since the content is being mastered in 120fps. Not sure anyone will notice/care when that occurs though except geeks like us.

This is the first time I've ever seen anyone allude to the projection system, thank you! Help me understand . . you are referring to 4 projectors, each doing 4K, aligned on a grid for a total resolution of 16K, at 120FPS? I am eager to know more . . . thanks! Why aren't the projectors ready, yet? Has the ride been spec'ed to tech that isn't out at this point, or is it a supply chain issue? Thanks for whatever info you can provide.

So, do we have definite info on the projection mechanics?

Is it still a Christie Laser 4 x 4K projector?

120 fps?

It was, and this is far from rumor. Two main entertainment offerings (sort of three) are planned. Night "show" on the mountains, which is more of a sequence than a show. The drum circle bit. Also, some of the things the nightlife will do that interacts with both the mountains and drums could almost be considered a show.

Other than the mountains having slightly shifting lights, will there be or still supposed to be a 'show' on the mountains?

And with regard to surrounding plant life, I thought that all the plants were going to be hooked up to a central control so that such things as you mentioned (reacting to the drum circle at night) could happen. Is there or will there be this whole-land-area-wide shifting of plant-lights? Because, from videos I've seen, they seem to be pretty static.

Don't know the best thread to post in, but this seemed the most "general". We have pre-park opening breakfast reservations at Tusker House on a non-EMH day (park opens at 9am). If we go in early and are done eating at, say, 8:45am, could we walk to Pandora over the path along the FOTLK theater? Or do we have to go through Discovery Island?

And would we be able to get into the land early that way beating the crowds from the gate? I know they've been letting people in early and holding them before allowing them to go to Pandora.

My goal is to have a ride on FoP while experiencing the full queue. We have FP+ for another day so I'll definitely ride, but wanted to also see the queue in its entirety but don't want to wait for an hour or more.

It's definitely Christie laser and there's several of them and it's some flavor of HDR - the brightness and contrast levels are insane. I don't know anyone with specific specs but it appears to be around 120 FPS.

Out of curiosity :D @marni1971 are you aware or can you say if an expansion is on the table depending on the success of Avatar 2? It seems to be circulating the internet. Obviously, they wouldn't have it open before 2022, but as a long term plan, it would be interesting if they plan on expanding. Thanks!

I would be curious to know as well. DSNY just made a video about it siting what I consider a throwaway line in a Vulture article.

I don't see it happening.

Yeah, I wanted to cover it as otherwise people might think it’s coming soon, so I laid out the reasons why a Pandora Expansion might not happen as well, as it really depends of Disney ROI from the Land and also the reaction to the new sequels in 2020.

But I can see Disney adding the more high end restaurant to the land before the 50th Anniversary, as it wouldn’t require much construction (compared to an attraction) and would be an instant money earner, instead of having to spend loads on marketing for a new ride.

Yeah the thing that most concerns me about any Pandora construction would be how it would disrupt the theming of the area during construction. This is environment that is designed to take you away from the rest of the park. The audio profile in particular separates you from the rest and allows you to be focused on your experience as if you are truly in Pandora.

Without even considering the visual component of having construction walls and construction equipment, the sound of construction would disrupt this environment that was created. I would personally rather Animal Kingdom expand elsewhere such as an Austrailia area or a Chester and Hester removal with proper Dinoland environment created.
