Total uniqueness?

Where will you find that?

Western countries have been influenced by their mother countries....as has Australia...and some others...

Greece? Totally unique? Nope...Italy, France and Spain, have similar cultures/traditions, vistas, architecture, people etc....

Its kinda like China and Japan...they are separate and have their own languages, traditions etc, but historically they are linked...China has had a definite influence on Japan...

Germany and Norway are similar too, and in no way totally unique...

So then why another country and NOT Spain?
YIKES! Never said "NOT" Spain.
My point being, having countries that resemble others as little as possible. My "totally" may have been to strong a word but from where your coming from, why bother, all cultures are similar. Replace "totally" with "as much". Now read, "I think it would be nice to add a country or two that offers as much uniqueness as possible. How's that? Better? No where did I say not Spain. I simply said a country or two.

Which other country or two then?

everyone talking about similar countries reminds of the first time my grandpa went to world showcase. he couldn't understand why there was china and japan his exact words were "you say tomato, i say tomatoe"

i think generalizations like that is what some people are talking about. there are people that think mexico is supposed to be spain. i have heard people call morocco, saudi arabia or iraq. some guest just don't know anybody, i think thats what the world showcase is all about exposing people here to different cultures.

i would like to see some different countries egypt would be great, israel would be different, and india is another i think could be good there. but everything comes down to who puts up the money.

I think this is very unfair! Those are spanish traditions and almost every culture will have some type of different tradition and do things which in American's eyes are off!
We should embrace all cultures and learn from them.

While bullfighting is apart of the spanish culture, my main issue with it is how it has changed so that the bulllfighter has an unfair advantage over the bull. It has also come under fire in its own country by its own citizens who are protesting it to have it abolished.

Just because it is a tradition doesn't necessarily make it right, for example, cannabalism, female castration, sacraficing animals or people, having several wives and everyone is entitled to express their opinion on it. As the world evolves, so do traditions, some will be discontinued and some new ones added, what may have been acceptable hundreds of years ago may not be in today's society.

and venezuela, brazil, argentina, colombia, ecuador, blah, blah blah are in SOUTH america

but America (the CONTINENT) goes from CANADA to Argentina
Oh no you sound like my mom :brick:

My mom was born and raised in Nicaragua. She learned there are 5 continents, and that the Americas is an entire continent.

I give up *sigh*

Bring Spain to WS. Woooo!

Sure, Greece has a rich ancient history...but after Rome took over....Italy, which has similar ties to the ancient world doesn't take advantage of that part of their history...

Many arguments can be made for Spain under this category of "history"....

One of which is of great importance...

Christopher Columbus sailed under the flag of the Spanish crown; after this Spain would go on to form a massive empire across the Atlantic and around to other parts of the world; with their conquests they soon became the richest country in the world. Add to that their powerful navy...etc etc etc...

Spanish history is interesting...from being part of the Roman Empire, to being invaded by the Moors, there are many things to use when forming a pavilion.

All that being said, I would like to see both a Spanish and Greek pavilion (perhaps a Brazilian pavilion before a Greek though).

Just my opinion. :D
Thread drift:

You reminded me, how's Peterson's class? :lookaroun :p

I assume, then, that you count Europe and Asia as one continent too.
Some people divide the continents only by geography; others divide them culturally as well. I was taught there are 7 continents: Africa, Asia, Europe, Australia, South America, North America, and Antarctica. But I understand the argument for 5.

I'd love to see Russia, but I don't think the country is doing so well economically. They're unlikely to fund anything like this any time soon.

I took Russian language as a kid and ended up with a couple of very sweet pen pals over there. They always had very nice things to say about America. I still have a box somewhere of postcards they sent of landmarks around Moscow. I wish we had not lost touch, but, you know how that happens over time.

We are in Arizona. We just moved here from Chicago

I do apologize for getting offended by the mexico and spain comment, and interpreting it wrong. I just can't stand ignorance.

I do agree with Spanish food not being the best, I crave American food daily. And with the bull fighting, I don't agree with that either. Though the Spanish will argue the positives of it.

If you have spanish friends they will tell you exactly the same thing about American food.
I'm not spanish and there's food I love and other I never will taste, but not only in spain, EVERYWHERE.
( and I have a restaurant in Spain, recomended in the Michelin guide).

You know what one of the most sold spainish souvenir is?
A Mexican hat,  not only American confuse Spain and mexico.

Spain is not the only country who has bullfighting, there's a lot of them in south of France and in wintertime the Spanish bullfighters go to fight in Mexico and south america.

And how do we know it's an American who asked for a "Paella":
... they all ask for ketchup :hurl:  .

As we say in Spanish : en gustos no hay nada escrito

My parents were raised with the 5 continents being: Europe, Asia, Africa, Americas, and Oceania. So for them, no Europe and Asia aren't one

having several wives

Just a derail on polygamy - it is very much a survival mechanism of some hunter/gatherer nomadic people. Without creating the larger group and delegating responsibility amoung the wives, survival would be very difficult in their circumstance (climate, food sources, etc..)

They could merely live together as a group without the marriage, but the bond is stronger and holds the group together.

So, while it may not be the way of the "civilized" world, it certainly isn't always a bad choice given the circumstances.

North America. http://www.ri.net/schools/Central_Falls/v/218/t7con.html

If I do a google search for continents, I get geography lessons teaching that there are 7. If I do a search for 5 continents, I get a bunch of bed and breakfasts and travel journals  That's just how they teach it here. Doesn't make my way or yours right or wrong- it's just another one of many cultural differences

PS Sorry I can't answer about the airports- I've never had the good fortune to fly internationally, so I have no idea about that. But I'd imagine they'd divide the world by what makes sense to them.

Agreed. My mom, dad, and I will continue to debate over the 5 versus 7 continents for the rest of our lives. Good times, good times

Even thought Mexico & Spain may seem the same there not. I think there so much alike that it would be a little silly to have a Spain in Ecpot. That is my thoughts.

Visit the official web of Spain ( http://www.spain.info/Tourspain/?language=en )
and tell me how much they look alike
(not more than England, USA and canada).

Statements like that are why I would like a Spanish pavilion.
Sorry for being so sarcastic.<O:p</O:p
