A Worse Dark Ride Than Mermaid

I thought not being able to take it all in was a feature of a good Disney attraction, not a bug. It's one of those things that Disney used to brag about when explaining all the details designed into Pirates, HM, Spaceship Earth, Small World, etc.

Again, a feature not a bug. Not discrediting your preference, but the cinematic approach works for me in this attraction.

I appreciate the classic black light FL rides for what they are. I don't go in expecting much, and I agree that they're fun and entertaining, as long as one has their expectations in check. Based on current show standards though most of the dark ride experiences in Fantasyland, especially Peter Pan and Snow White, are overrated given their iconic status.

How do you do that multi quote thing? It would make my life so much easier.

Highlight the line you want to comment on and then click quote instead of reply, and repeat. When you're ready hit insert quotes below the text window and voila! Your copied quotes are available to insert.

First off what a game changer this quote thing is. Thank you.

I think that this is a good quality in a ride but i didn't list this as one of the negatives. I said it gives us time to see the NON show elements.

Yeah i guess i dont see what the point is of going with a cinematic approach for an IP based ride. They are using The Little Mermaid, the movie that we ve all seen at the theaters and/ or VHS/DVD. The point of the attraction is to bring the adventure to life and make the guest a part of the adventure. We already get the passive experience when we re watching the movies. TBH I feel way more immersed in ITTBAB, which is an actual theater attraction, because of all the clever ways it interacts with the guests.

I can see why you think they are overrated. They definitely get nostalgia points. I think the key word you said is "expectations." In the tiny FL courtyard we dont have such big expectations but when you see Little Mermaids facade or Pooh in CBJ's big old show building you expect a lot more. With that said, I do think all of the FL rides and Roger are more fun than Mermaid. They re dark, they re "fast", they re weird and because of the tight spaces I feel much more, here it comes again... immersed. (sorry)

He was talking about the 'non show' stuff -- i.e. lights and other infrastructure. One of my biggest issues with Mermaid and Cars is that all that stuff is just totally exposed, some more obvious than others. They never try to hide the fact that you are on a ride.

Well yeah.... I always thought that Mermaid's production values had more in common with some of the old EPCOT Future World rides (World of Motion comes to mind) than Mr. Toad, particularly the Under the Sea segment, but maybe I'm being too generous.

Speaking of hiding non show elements, I'd be all in favor of IASW getting some upgrades in that regard. The ceiling, dirty carpet etc. can go.

Monsters is the most forgettable dark ride in either park. The queue is entertainingish but the only really good part going for the ride is Roz. I preferred Superstar Limo - at least it wasn't forgettable.

There was a time when I was going to collect opinions on Disney that were signs that maybe someone has lost perspective when it comes to the parks. A sort of "You might be a little too emotionally invested if believe too many of these" thing. I sobered up before that idea went very far. But this one would've made the list.

Somewhat on the topic of Mermaid: I remember shortly after that ride opened there was a bunch of discussion (on Micechat I think) claiming that WDI intended to eventually extend/re-stage the ride to include an Ursula battle climax, and that this was originally going to happen during the same refurb when they darkened the Under the Sea room but got pushed back indefinitely. Does anyone know anything about that?

Also Monsters is hella underrated btw.
