Issues with contractors (quality, schedules, etc) is hardly a new development or one unique to the Chinese, even if there is state ownership. Nor is a Disney theme park going over budget new.Again, talking about Baha Mar, the developer of this $3.5 billion mega resort project in the Bahamas is desperately seeking another $300 million (sound familiar to SDL?) in financing to get the stalled project finished and open, while the Chinese sit back, laugh, and move their workers and assets back to China or onto other projects. And since the government of the Bahamas is so small and weak and the resort represents such a huge part of the economy, China is basically exerting its not-so-soft power right off the coast of Florida for all to see (if they simply opened their eyes).
You would think that with companies like Hyatt and SLS and Rosewood involved that raising those funds would be like me finding $4 for a drink at Starbucks, but you'd be wrong because it appears the CCP has let it be known that by complaining about the quality of build and workmanship (sound familiar again?) on the project that Baha's developer, Armenian Sarkis Izmirlian, has caused these Chinese workers and the country to ''lose face'' and that helping finance the finishing of this massive project wouldn't be a good idea for those wishing to do business in the future with or in the Chinese Mainland.
So, you have a massive hotel/casino/entertainment resort complex that is about 85% completed -- one completely controlled by the Chinese government -- just sitting and baking in the hot tropical sun ... as 2014 cancellations turned into 2015 cancellations that are now turning into 2016 and even 2017 cancellations and many top execs that have been part of this are quitting and trying to rebuild careers after being soiled by being part and party (no not Commie Party) to this mess.
Since you likely haven't heard it, I'll drop it here: not just in the Bahamas, but globally within certain circles this is being referred to as the P(eople's) R(epublic) Disaster. And guess who's heading it? A couple of Disney veterans.
I'm going to respond to this because I find it mildly amusing.
Am I a "Disney Shill?" lol Absolutely not! Am I a "Disney fan?" Yes! I spent many years with the company, have been vacationing at Disney parks all over the world regularly for more than 20 years! (Tokyo Disney FTW!!) Hell, I even got married at Walt Disney World and celebrated our 10th anniversary there. Yes, I'm a fan.
Do I like everything that Disney does? No. Of course not. Ask me the last time I went into Stitch Encounter or watched the Indy Jones Stunt show. Heck, I wasn't even that big of a fan of Inside Out. (Liked it, didn't love it, maybe it will grow on me...)
But I choose to focus on the fun and good times while visiting parks and not the negative. If someone wants to go around reporting broken USB ports or crumbs on the Peoplemover, they can do that to their hearts desire. But that's not someone I want to spend time with. My choice.
You can find negativity in every consumer based activity you do. From walking through a high end shopping complex to getting gas at the gas station. When I am at a park, I want to leave all that mundane crap behind me and go have fun! If a broken animatronic or chipped paint on a ride vehicle is going to impact my day, then I need to find a new outlet to have fun at.
As far as how I treat people online, I treat them exactly as they treat me. You write something rude and obnoxious about us or our content on our socials, you're gonna get that same attitude right back. We don't block people for having opinions, we block people for the way they present them. And looking at our stats, we block slightly less than 1% of our followers, and I'm just fine with that number. If you've found yourself blocked that means you aren't someone we want on our pages. Again, our choice. I'm sure there are other online forums, YouTube channels, or Facebook pages that will fit your personality better than TPR. Find them. Endorse them. We encourage that.
And sorry if you guys think it's "creepy" that I took time out of my Japan trip, but I'm sitting on a bullet train on my way to Universal Studios Japan with a few minutes to spare and to be honest, I found it entertaining to get a message with a link to this thread "your buddy Seth is STILL going on about you and the USB ports! lol" so I had to write back! It amuses me!
For those of you who enjoy our site, we thank you, for those of you who don't, we strongly recommend sites like this one or others that fit your interests. You aren't impacting us AT ALL by patronizing other sites, but you are wasting your time complaining about ours.
Oh, and two quick things:
"Now, he is definitely a Disney fanboi through and through. But, he seems to generally love a lot of amusement parks that most of us would have to be paid to go to. WDW is amazing compared to some of the dumps they visit."
This guy gets it.
"He is also the guy who I saw in May at a park media day illegally whipping out his phone on a ride to get pictures of the nearby new ride. He almost lost his phone too..."
This would be horrible if it was true but since it's not it's hilarious.
Thanks for reading everyone! Have a Disney day!!! (Except for me... I'm gonna go ride Jaws and Back to the Future!)
Moving on from drama queens....
Looks like I was 100% wrong about Star Wars and D23. No one is more happy than me about being wrong there....
I love that gif. This thread continues to entertain even 1000+ pages through, and there I was thinking the drama might start to slow down
Bring on the next thousand!
Edit: and look at me using gifs. I'm so fancy!
I've been waiting to be really hyped about Disney for quite some time now, but you all should know exactly how that feels anywayIt looks that way.

Pardon... But exactly who are you?
Just wanted to say - event though this is objectively a lame attraction - I have a bit of a soft spot for it.Someone, somewhere confirmed that the Mushu film is getting the ax and the animation academy is having the tables replaced with bench seating and lapboards to add capacity.
Come on, guy got pretty viciously attacked on here - I don't know who he is, either - and I don't have an opinion on him/his work either way - but if people are going to be viciously, personally attacking him (warranted or not) and the posts remain up, unless the moderators decide otherwise, he should be allowed to defend himself.

If the state is ripping Disney off to get the additional funds then they are ripping themselves off. The additional, "missing" $800 million was not all Disney money. Only about $344 million was paid by Disney. The remaining $456 million came from the state-owned Shanghai Shendi Group.Very interesting insight into how things go. This could very well have been how things at Shanghai Disneyland proceeded for that 800 millions. Is the lure of that 300 millions and growing "middle class" in China that big that companies still go in there after stories like this?
If only someone would write something about the IP trend...I do recall reading a post by @hopemax somewhere regarding seeing many people complaining about the classic Disney attractions because they didn't pay homage to the current BRAND or characters or IP. Things that are soooo Disney from Mansion to Pirates to Small World to Tiki Room to Jungle Cruise to CoP etc were bashed because "there's no princesses'' or ''where's Olaf?'' or ''Why isn't Stitch or Princess Tangled in here?''
No, those weren't the comments, but those were the the thoughts in the background.
Sadly, Disney has become all about the characters, about the characters ... no transporting people to other times and places (and not simply in the parks -- unless someone can tell me why all the Disney Princesses have something to do with the history of the Old South at Dixie Landings!)
I think, barring a major shift in thinking in 2018 when management does a HUGE regime change, the gap between those of us who grew up and love the Disney of the 70s-90s (50s and 60s for the really old folks!) and the generation who weren't even born until the 80s or 90s or GASP ... 00s ... will just grow and become a huge chasm. The two Disneys are not only not similar, today's actually contradicts so many basic tenets of OUR Disney. (HINT: If you can justify Frozen in Norway, then you're one of those folks.)
I really don't know what the answer is beyond a rethinking at the highest levels of the company -- and, like I said, we're about three years away from that even starting to happen.
