A few comments and questions on the current theme, and next years WDW theme.........

First off, I must say that I really am not that crazy about the current theme. I mean, I think that the whole 'get in for free on your birthday' thing is nice and all, but I think its a cheap and lazy theme. 'What Will You Celebrate, cause we sure don't know! Make up your own theme for your vacation!'

The parades are kinda dumbed down, and rather boring.

I much preferred the Multi-Year Of A Million Dreams. Random giveaways. The night in Cinderella's Castle. I'm telling you, this whole 'What Will You Celebrate' theme is nothing but a money making scheme. Does anyone here not think that its a little weird that the year that the economy really hits the crapper that Disney suddenly starts letting you get in free on your birthday? Sounds all too convenient to me.

At least two of my friends are planning on going down to WDW and DL on their birthday, simply for the fact that they will be able to get in free. And granted, this is the outcome that we want; More people coming out, more money coming in.

Now, the second part of this, is do you think Disney will/should continue the free birthday admission past this year? Personally, I think that this should become something that part of the Disney policy. Everyone can get in free on their birthday. All year. Every year.

Lastly, what will next years theme be? We are almost half way done with this year, and naturally the thoughts of next years theme is looming over us all, including Disney.

Knowing Disney, I can see it now...............

*executive walks into the Disney board meeting*

"Sorry I'm late guys! Just had the boys putting the finishing touches on the new 2010 planning DVD!"

*sounds of awe and impressment echo around the room*

*young exec gets really loud and starts yelling*

"And let me tell you, we have a REAL WINNER ON OUR HANDS!!!!!"

*head Disney exec waves*

"Well, lets see it!"

*young exec smiles, and sticks the dvd into the nearest dvd player*

*lights go down*

*big screen flickers to life*

*camera pans through clouds in baby blue skies*

*Mickey balloons fly past camera*

*voiceover comes on*

"You know, there is so many wonderful things in this world. Among those, is the laugh of a child......."

*shot of adorable child laughing while eating a Dole Whip*

"............the innocence of childhood........."

*shot of a child, not knowing any better, laughing as he runs into Stitches Great Escape, unawares of the fate that awaits him*

".......................and the magical memories that will live forever..............."

*shot of child crying infront of a 'Closed for Refurbishment' sign beside Space Mountain*

*camera goes back to flying through clouds and blue skies*

"But perhaps the most magical of all these, is the magic of meeting your favorite Disney character. So that is why this year, at Disney Parks, we are celebrating the most magical character of them all......."

*camera pans down through clouds, and infront of Cinderella's Castle*

"Stitch!"

*camera flashes images of Stitch waving to camera, guests, and the executives*

*shot of man who created the new theme*

"Based on the answers that you the guests would have given had we asked, we decided to celebrate the most beloved Disney character of all time; Stitch! Last year, we asked you, 'What Will YOU Celebrate?', and this year, we are telling you! With our all new theme, Stitches Super Celebration Of Light, Color, Energy, Air, and All The Things That Make Us Unique As Human Beings (and also hair!)."

*ooooos and ahhhhhhhs echo through out the meeting room*

"We know that parents, AND kids just love Stitch! After all, who DOESN'T like Stitch!?"

*camera pans back up into the clouds*

"So plan to join us in 2010 as we take a step back, take a break from the rat race of the world, and focus on what really matters: Stitch."

*video ends and lights come back up*

*silence*

*silence*

*a lone man in the back of the room stands up and begins a slow, long clap*

*another man rises and begins clapping*

*soon all the executives stand and begin to applaud and whistle and yell*

*head executive steps towards the young exec and sticks his hand out*

"Sir, I think I speak for the rest of the board when I say, that was brilliant, MR. PRESIDENT!"

*young exec gasps*

"A promotion???? OH JEEEEE GOLLY GOSH!! I'M SO HAPPY! THANK YOU ALL!"

*young exec bows many times, then pauses long enough to cast his eyes to the heavens, and blow a kiss*

"Thank you Lord Stitch. Praises be unto you almighty one."

In my opinion the 'themes' serve no point. WDWs 25th, the Millenium Celebration, and even 100 Years of Magic were all appropriate to an extent (looking your way pink cake castle). Everything that has come after has been lame.

As for the birthday deal, it was smart in order to drum up visits in a slagging economy, and it'd be nice if it stuck around forever, but we all know that won't happen.

But if I had to take a stab at next years theme, I'll go with 'Magical Year of Fairytale Enchantment and 100 Dream Wishes Celebration'.

I am headed to WDW in August to get my birthday gift certificate, and as neat as that is, I would personally trade it for the chances of neat things happening for my kids in YOMD.

While we never won anything big in 3 trips during the Y +1/2 OMD, my kids got certificates for playing musical instruments outside Philharmagic, joining the Hundred Acre Wood club, bowling at Pop Century, etc.

The spontaneous and surprising little things are as magical to a little kid as any big prize (save maybe the Cinderella Suite) could be, and it is this kind of thing that sets WDW apart from other theme parks.

They should stop coming up with new names and ideas, and just keep these magical moments flowing.

I cant believe that they have that room in the castle just collecting dust...Hey maybe thats where they get the dust for The Haunted Mansion that they are so secretive about.

I liked YOAMD. It looked classier. This stuff just looks tacky.

But in the end, these "celebrations" are really superfluous. They should just be external ad campaigns and that's that. Why plaster the product in more promotion when the product is already bought?

That was in my Marketing 1 book.:lookaroun

I agree that having a constantly changing 'theme' is unnecessary. Disneyland flourished 45 years as "The Happiest Place on Earth". Why start adding to that with more unnecessary words? I also agree that celebrations are appropriate for important events. WDW 25th, Millennium, DL 50th, and (maybe) Walt's 100th Birthday. Having a never ending stream of planned events makes the important ones, well, less important.

Plus we get relics of these events cluttering up parks a decade later. (Wands, hats and the like...) Unless you guys want more weinie-covering decorations. I do not.

Well said. I can't believe I forgot to mention the "additions":zipit::lol:

They still do a bunch of these magical moments at the parks and resorts. They weren't just because of the YOMD. It's just a different than take part in this dream, it's join the celebration.

They are part of the basics of Disney now and are pushed for great guest interaction.

I, too, would prefer that they quit having a "theme" every year. As others have said, occasional celebrations are fine, such as the 50th anniversary, the millenium, etc. But there is no need to have an annual celebration merely for the sake of having a theme. If there is an important landmark in a particular year, then go ahead and make that a theme for that year. If not, then don't come up with some silly "celebration".

 Seriously!

They spent so much money and time fixing that suite, I just can't see them letting it stay empty from now on.

I wish they'd continue to let guests win the experience.

As for the yearly themes, I can do without. (If I had won a Dream Fastpass or Castle stay, I'd be singing a different tune, I'm sure!)
I don't even notice they are there until I see a banner or special napkin, etc.

As Victor said, they serve no point.
Well, I guess the point is to attract more guests...?

Put me down on the list of people that would like to see an end of these meaningless "year long celebrations." Why does Disney find the need to create a celebration when there are ligitimate ones (cough*Epcot's 25th*cough) waiting to be had? You can celebrate important park aniversaries (10, 15, 25 years, etc), company milestones (Walt's 100 birthday), and significant human achievements (Millenium Celebration), but leave the made up banners and promotions behind. Put the pixie dust and magic into new and existing attractions and everyone will be just as, if not more, happy.

That being said, I like WWYC a bit more than the YOMD because everyone has the chance to celebrate their birthday so everyone can participate. With the YOMD, it was sort of a luck of the draw on whether or not you got something and, while it made for magic moments for some, it left others feeling "left out" so to speak.

And while the YOMD banners may have been nicer looking than the current WWYC ones, that monorail pixie crap was just awful. I'll take the Mickey balloons any day over that other stuff.

AH! I know!! It's so frustrating to me. That room is so beautiful - it's my dream, like so many others, to stay there just for one night. I just wish someone, anyone, would stay there each night. I hope whatever next years theme is, that it resurrects the use of the suite. I liked YOAMD. It was fun hoping that the dream squad would appear out of the blue if I drank out of the right water fountain, or sat on the right bench. It made each trip extra exciting.

I don't like this years theme. IMO, the buttons were more fun when not every person in the park was wearing them. When I was just there, it was overwhelming. There's no way to make every single one of the people wearing buttons have an extra special day. I even saw people with several buttons on lanyards - first trip, birthday & a random "I'm celebrating" button on the same person. It was just too much.

I liked the Year of a Million Dreams, maybe because i got a dream fastpass and $40 worth of free stuff at Blizzard Beach :) I can't see why they have to have a theme, they should deffinately keep on giving out stuff like this because it made peoples day and getting in free on your Birthday is a good idea too but they don't have to theme everything and put banners and stuff up everywhere, i just don't see the point.

Magic Kingdom turns 40 in 2011. I was thinking that they might continue the current theme through October 2010 and then begin the new one then. Don't know. I guess we will see.

P.S. I enjoyed spending my 50th :)eek:) birthday with the Mouse. Spending my birthday money in MouseGears took me about 5 minutes.

Personally, I feel like getting in for free should be a permanent thing.

And I felt like YOAMD was a more magical theme. Random surprises were a cool thing. And the anticipation of the possibility of getting picked to stay in the castle suite was such a cool thing.

I'm telling you, this whole 'What Will You Celebrate' theme is nothing but a money making scheme.

You know what? I think this whole Disney Corporation thing is a money making scheme. And I hope they continue to make money because a lot of my portfolio is in Disney stock.

Agreed, and agreed. The only thing wrong with YOAMD was that it was celebrating nothing.

While that no doubt is a large part of it, I personally feel like there is an honest desire for magical experiences for children. They wouldn't go to alot of the lengths they go to if it was all about money.

That's exactly how I feel too. Something about the current theme's decorations just looks cheap and not as classy to me as YOAMD. I'm sure people feel the opposite but at the end of the day, these celebrations are, as you said, superfluous.

But I will be happy to stop seeing balloon silhouettes on everything :lookaroun

Disclaimer: This is no way means that I have less of a good time in the parks than I did last year. :)
