A Dream Is A Wish Your Heart Makes: A March 2011 Disney Wedding/Honeymoon Trip Report

It’s official! Brett and I are finally married and I couldn’t be more excited. We had the most perfect wedding day ever, at our most favorite place in the whole entire world. And of course, as expected, it went by all too quickly. I’m not going to lie, coming down off the high that was our Disney wedding/cruise/honeymoon has been tough. In fact, I'm hoping that writing up/posting this trip report will help me work through some of that. However, I’ve spent much of my spare time in the last few weeks staring at a blank word document... writer’s block? Never heard of it!

For the first time ever, in all my trip report writing, I did a pre-trip report. It lays out most of the wedding-related details, but for those of you out there who are like me and rarely read pre-trip reports, here’s a quick rundown of events:

Wednesday, March 16, 2011: Drive down, check in offsite for the night
Thursday, March 17, 2011: Check-in, Disney’s Polynesian Resort
Friday, March 18, 2011: Wedding Day, Sunset Pointe
Sunday, March 20, 2011: Board Disney Dream for a 4 night Bahamas cruise
Thursday, March 24, 2011: Check-in, Disney’s Wilderness Lodge
Sunday, March 27, 2011: Check out and head home

We kind of saw this trip as having three legs: Wedding/Cruise/Disney!

A look back at our Disney trip reports: September 2008 (Contemporary), December 2008 (Old Key West), January 2009 (Port Orleans Riverside & Disney Marathon), July 2009 (Wilderness Lodge Villas/Animal Kingdom Lodge), December 2009 (Beach Club Villas), March 2010 (Pop Century & Princess Half), June 2010 (Coronado Springs), August 2010 (Polynesian & Engagement), December 2010 (Kidani Village)

This was our first time on DCL, however, we’ve cruised a handful of times before. So if anyone is interested, those trip reports can be found here: May 2009 (Carnival Liberty), December 2009 (Royal Caribbean Monarch of the Seas), May 2010 (Emerald Princess), June 2010 (Norwegian Sky)

Oh dear. I feel like I’m embarking on what will be the longest trip report EVER (and I’ve written some long ones). My apologies in advance, as it will likely take awhile to get this report up in its entirety. The good news though, is that I’ve completed the text all the way up through the wedding, so we’ll get to that part fairly quickly!

With all that said, let the memories begin...

The ears! We made them, and it was incredibly easy. On our December trip we went in the Chapeau and bought two ears (like $3 apiece) and then when we got home I went to Party City and bought a fairly cheap ($7) top hat. Popped the ears through with brads and voila... Top Hat Groom Ears!

I'm glad we got some cute pictures with them at the Magic Kingdom, but we ended up wearing them a lot less than I thought we would.

What a great idea! I LOVE DIY wedding stuff. I'm afraid we won't wear our nice personalized bride and groom ears too often because we like to ride thrill rides and I don't want to have to smush them in my Nerds Rock tote bag :) I think I'm going to DIY some bride and groom baseball caps w/ ears. Here's a link to the instructions if anyone is interested:

You guys are so helpful with the ears! lol I was so against the tuxedo ones Disney is selling now. The day after our wedding when we go in the parks, my future husband is going to wear a tuxedo t-shirt and I'm going to wear a white sun dress with the ears. So it would be a little weird if he had a tuxedo on his shirt and also his head, the DIY ones sound great though!

After a few minutes, the butler led us inside where a couple of maids were waiting to escort us to our table in the main dining room. We were the ONLY people there. And it’s not like we were our usual super duper early nerdy selves or anything, we had actually timed it just right. OMG?! Were we going to be the only diners in the place? Awwwwk-ward.

IMG_4005.jpg

your dinner looked fantastic!! I'll definitely have to put that on my Disney bucket list :) I had to laugh when reading about your close encounter to the ultimate in awkwardness...my husband and I had a very similar experience one time - we were in London and my husband had made reservations at this super nice restaurant but the reservations were at like 7 p.m. which apparently is way before all the super cool people in London go out to dinner...we were the only people in the restaurant...it was so awkward...all the waiters, the hostess, the sommelier, EVERYONE just kept staring at us...as soon as we took a sip of water, it was refilled, as soon as we put our napkin down, it was folded, as soon as we put a piece of silverware down, it was replaced...we couldn't help but just laugh throughout dinner because it was so uncomfortable!

Oh, Holly, I'm loving your report so much! I must go to Flying Fish. Jordan looooves scallops. Plus, I love a place that changes its menu regularly. Oh, and I really want to try Vicky's now. We (I) am thinking about going on our next trip together. We will be celebrating Jordan's graduation and our two year anniversary, so why not have an amazing celebration?

When I saw your pictures from outside of Roaring Fork, I could smell the place. I know you know what I mean. It just makes me so excited about staying there again. Also, the bananas foster waffles looked amazing.

One last thing: I didn't read all of your pre-trip report (for shame, I know), so I had no idea about Brett's e-mail blunder. I literally laughed out loud. That was awesome.

Looking forward to more (and more and more trip reports)!

Shortly after we got into our room, bell services arrived with our luggage. We didn’t waste any time unpacking though, because we were getting hungry and there was too much fun to be had in the parks. A quick bite to eat at Roaring Fork seemed to be the best way to go, so we headed down there for a quick breakfast!

IMG_3424.jpg

IMG_3425.jpg

OMG! Best quick service breakfast ever... they had specialty Mickey waffles. Brett ordered the Wilderness Waffles, which were served with maple butter and candied pecans, and I had the Bananas Fosters Waffles, covered in bananas and a butter rum sauce. :slurp: :slurp:

Sooooo good!

IMG_3430.jpg

Roaring Fork! Or maybe I should say, Fork Roaring!

IMG_3432.jpg

IMG_3433.jpg

Two thumbs up for Roaring Fork. Seriously... we loved breakfast so much that we even made a special trip over to the Wilderness Lodge for quick service on our most recent May trip. I really do wish there were more “specialty” items at the different resorts (through either quick service or table service, really).

Ok, first of all, when I saw your picture of the hall leading down to Roaring Fork I actually could SMELL the hotel. Yes...smell. it. I love wilderness lodge. We have stayed there every time, and bought DVC there after our latest trip. It truly feels like our home away from home. I feel like I'm going to burst out of my skin I'm so anxious to get back.

Second of all, I had no idea they had specialty waffles. I think every time we grab breakfast there we are so ready to get to the parks I have just grabbed a bagel. no more, let me tell you! Specialty waffles are definitely in my future. :sohappy:

Holly,

L-O-V-E all of your reports! I love CM's that are so passionate about their job! It was great that she took all those pictures for you. I had a similar experience at Epcot in April with a Photopass CM. He had taken our pic early in the day and we passed him as he walking through the Italy pavilion. He remembered us, called us over and basically gave us our own mini photo shoot all around the pavilion!

Woo hoo for Crystal Palace !!

So glad the V&A experience was good for you! We go once or twice a year, and we LOVE Shaun! He only works one night a week and he's hard to catch so we haven't seen him in a while - glad to see he is still there and working his magic! And the food! V&A's has the best soups. We love the butternut squash. I think the foam is kind of a signature thing for the chef there. Who would think of that? The wine pairing is always wonderful, but sometimes it seems strange until you put the flavors together. D once got a beer with one of his courses!

Okay...I swear I've been reading the updates but then my head gets so full of stuff I want to say that I forget it all. Or its too much to actually put you thru the pain of having to read thru. LOL!

V&As looks soooo cool. I'd love to try that sort of dining experience even if I'm 90% certain it'd be like trying to force a square peg thru a round hole. LOL! Actually, the Chef's table is Chandler's dream Sweet 16 celebration. He's not too ambitious, is he? Talk about champagne taste on a beer budget. Yikes! I'd love to see beer pairings with a multi-course meal sometime. That would rock. And the way you described the weirdness reminded me of an anniversary dinner Tracey's folks treated us to years and years ago at a fancy-ish restaurant. Each time a course was served (wasn't as many as V&As) a waiter/waitress would stand behind each of our chairs and whatever plates or bowls that were being placed in front of us all arrived in total unison. Seriously. It was so odd. I kept trying to listen for who was counting outloud for them to all move simultaneously like that. I was so sure I'd hear someone quietly saying, "One, two, three...go!" I watched to see if there was a hand signal. It really weirded me out. I wanted so desperately to throw them off somehow.

Everything sounds soooo oober-perfect! I bet y'all never wanted it to end. So sweet.... **sigh**

Wow, Victoria and Alberts was sounds amazing. I've toured it but never eaten there. I'm afraid I'm way to picky of an eater to get my money's worth. I love to look though. Kind of like Top Chef! I love to look but I can't imagine eating the vast majority of it.

My heart stopped right along with Brett's. I thought your neck strap broke. My strap broke on the Med cruise, but thankfully, the camera was more or less resting in my hand at time. As I felt the release of pressure around my neck I panicked and grabbed!! I actually though it was being stolen by pickpockets. We'd been so conditioned to beware of pick pockets, that was the only reason I was semi carrying it too. Otherwise either my camera or $1600 lens I was renting was a goner.

Although I wouldn't have cried about the fact that it was broken as much as the fact that I would have had to finish the rest of the cruise without it!

SO glad the flash is okay!! I never did find a strap I like as well, so it's tied in a knot to keep it functioning. I am constantly checking the knot when I'm wearing it. Kind of like you and your flash!

Would you believe Brett and I both grew up as picky eaters? And neither one of us was all that adventurous with our food until we started dating. Honestly, the chefs at Vicky’s are so skilled at their craft that it was easy to trust them.

OMG! I would’ve had a heart attack over a $1600 lens (that’s when you hope the renter’s insurance really is good ). And yeah, I would've been super jumpy over the thought of pick pockets. I’ve always kind of worried about the straps, but with the new ones we (my mom and I) are making, we’ve made a conscience effort to make them as sturdy as possible. I was nervous to use the “quick release” clasps at first, but it’s necessary if you want to change straps on the fly. And I do that all the time now.

Could you imagine having to finish a vacation without your precious camera?! I’d die. Especially on a Med cruise.

I’d be checking the knot like crazy… I told myself, if the flash falls off, it’ll be okay, seeing as how it’s one of the lesser expensive gear items, and it probably needs replaced now, anyway. But I don’t know if I could risk the camera and whatever lens may be attached.

The baseball caps are definitely cute, too! My apologies on the delay… I should have the buttons in the mail tomorrow (things have been insane at work this week).

What a cute idea! Isn’t it fun planning outfits for Disney. I just LOVE that part of any trip!

It was really weird, because there ended up not being any actual awkward moments, yet there were so many times when I would think “hmm… this could be soooooo awkward.”

I was thinking you forgot to message me to tell me you were done...WRONG! Geez lets go!!!! Haha

Nope, just that slow!

Oh wheee, it's not over! The joy!

Solid Vicky's play by play.. you guys looked great (looove your dress!).

Thanks, lovely!

Oh, Holly, I'm loving your report so much! I must go to Flying Fish. Jordan looooves scallops. Plus, I love a place that changes its menu regularly. Oh, and I really want to try Vicky's now. Seriously, over time the Flying Fish has really risen to the top of my must-eat list. And if Jordan loves scallops then you definitely have to give it a try. The scallop dishes there are always amazing. As for Vicky’s, DO IT! It really is a must.

I totally get what you’re saying about the smell. Aren’t our senses funny like that?! An extra little tip about the waffles… they let you order the kids meal version (with only two waffles). I did this on a subsequent trip and I became even more excited about the waffles, as two is the PERFECT amount for a quick breakfast!

Yes, Brett’s email blunder – one of my new favorite stories to tell!

Ok, first of all, when I saw your picture of the hall leading down to Roaring Fork I actually could SMELL the hotel. Yes...smell. it. I love wilderness lodge. How fabulous is that hall?! There’s just something about it – I don’t know if it’s the super wide walkway or the natural light coming through the wall of windows or what, but that hallway is perfect.

Yep! The specialty waffles… funny, they’ve become a focal point in this trip report! But they totally desert all the attention they’re getting – go get yourself some!

Holly,

L-O-V-E all of your reports! I love CM's that are so passionate about their job! It was great that she took all those pictures for you. Thanks, Nicole! Yeah, the CMs really can make a huge difference in the littlest of ways. One of the reasons we love Disney.

So glad the V&A experience was good for you! We go once or twice a year, and we LOVE Shaun! He only works one night a week and he's hard to catch so we haven't seen him in a while - glad to see he is still there and working his magic! And the food! V&A's has the best soups. The wine pairing is always wonderful, but sometimes it seems strange until you put the flavors together. D once got a beer with one of his courses!

Oh wow! We thought Shaun was just fabulous. I remember him talking about how great the soups were, and we ended up being lucky enough to taste both the butternut squash and the lobster bisque, as it was a part of our amuse bouche. We got a kick out of the foam, mostly because if you’ve ever watched Top Chef, there was a contestant (Marcel) who put foam on EVERYTHING. To the point of exhaustion. I can see why you go annually, hopefully, we’ll be able to start doing that one day. I have a feeling it wasn’t just a “once in a lifetime” meal for us. We have to go back!

LOL! Okay, how crazy is it that Chandler, at sixteen, wants to dine at Vicky’s?! That’s quite the refined young man you’ve raised there, and with quite the palette. At that age I wouldn’t have even had the slightest clue what a meal like that would entail nor would I have cared about it.

I think they call it “sweeping” when they arrange to sit all the plates down at once. It’s neat!

I see what you’re saying about the whole square peg/round hole, but I still think you and Tracey should totally check it out. There’s something about Disney that makes you feel completely comfortable. Had we been anywhere else in the world I don’t know if I would’ve felt right in such an establishment, but it’s just different at Disney. I don’t really need to preach it here, as I know you get it.

so just booked our honey moon doin laundry and found your TR... several hours later I finaly finished... omg... looked like so much fun.. and so many ideas... cant wait till october

Wahooo! Honeymoons at Disney are the BEST. Congrats on the pending nuptials. And in my opinion, October is the best time of year to visit Disney… I hope you have an amazing Disneymoon!

Hangover Schmangover!! Have no fear; we were up and out of the room by 7:30am the next morning! Our former bartending selves would’ve been soooo proud!

We had our sights set on morning extra magic hours at the Studios, and arrived at the entrance gates right around 8am.

First up, of course, was a stop in Pixar Place for TSMM fastpasses. Woohooo... a return time of 9:35am was pretty darn good… especially for a couple of lushes who’d had too much to drink the previous evening! Back at the Hat, Stitch was hanging out all by himself… we couldn’t allow that.

Pooh needed love to, so we wandered over there.

And then we made our way down Sunset.

We rode both the Tower of Terror and RNR (each was practically walk-on) before heading back towards the Scary Apothecary. As you well know by now, no trip to the Scary Apothecary is complete without a mirror shot! Can’t you just see how much Brett LOVES the Sweet Spells mirror!?

IMG_4159.jpg

He's so handsome when he's humoring me!

IMG_4160.jpg

We planned on stopping in Starring Rolls for a quick breakfast, but the place was quite crowded, so we opted for the lesser known Writer’s Stop on Commissary Lane. The place was empty, and the CMs were super sweet to us, congratulating us on our marriage and complimenting my choice of outfit for the day. Awww! :)

IMG_4165.jpg

Breakfast consisted of a strawberry muffin for me, and a blueberry one for Brett. With a coke, of course!

I find the Wizard of Oz to be one of the strangest movies… maybe I just don’t get it, but I’ve never been a fan.

We saw Eeyore across the courtyard and when we arrived to meet him, his handler told us that Eeyore’s house blew down and he had to go check on it. Sooooo sad (but clever). We noticed Goofy across the way, he was trying desperately to pop bubbles as he left his post. It was actually pretty hilarious.

As a party of two, when we entered the TSMM queue the CM sent us up the stairs on the right and straight to the front of the line (this has happened on just about all our TSMM visits since). What’s the deal? It seems surprising that they need parties of two like that. Oh well, who am I to complain?!

Two cool things happened on this ride: we managed to get the Spanish version of Buzz AND we worked together to open up a robot in the ring toss scene with the Little Green Men. Yay teamwork!

At the little shop across the street we picked up Hamm! We were super excited to see him, as he had been MIA for a while and we were starting to fear he wouldn’t be restocked. While we were there we noticed a certain someone barring passage into the Cast Member area. By the looks of those blinds, I’d say he had some captives back there.

I remember we commented more than once about how cool it would be if they had a “tree sized” Lotso. Lo and behold, they actually had the smaller version on my most recent July trip. YAY! Spoiler alert: I brought him home with me! The other plush in the storage bucket were none too happy to see him though.

We had one more purchase to make as our trip was nearing to a close... so off to the Stage One Company store we went to pick up the last of the available muppets. With Gonzo in tow, we now had the complete set of Muppets plush.

We exited the Studios around 11am and made our way over to the International Gateway. World Showcase was absolutely packed, which was somewhat surprising seeing as how it had just opened. We strolled around for a bit. It was starting to get hot and we eventually sought refuge in MouseGear for a while, before hitting up some of the Future World rides, like Test Track and Mission: Space.

In the Festival Center we checked out some of the Flower and Garden merch.

Walking through Future World we were stopped by one of the DVC CMs… he worked a good angle, what with seeing our buttons and all. He recognized us as honeymooners and then went into a "wouldn’t you like to make this an annual tradition?" spiel. When we told him Brett’s parents were DVC owners and that we planned on joining sometime in the future, he smiled happily and dropped his pitch. Instead, he offered to take a couple of pictures for us, which was really nice. I love that the DVC folks don't ever really push you... instead, it sells itself.

IMG_4263.jpg

IMG_4265.jpg

I think the heat was getting to us or something, because when we hit World Showcase, we decided to hop on one of the Friendship boats to Morocco instead of just walking around to France via Canada. We never do this… usually we would deem it lazy , when really all it is, is leisurely.

IMG_4267.jpg

I had a mission in France… and today was just the day, seeing as how I needed a bit of a pick-me-up. Grand Marnier Slushie, my friends, need I say more?! I think not.

IMG_4274.jpg

IMG_4272.jpg

While you often see me going on and on (and on and on) about my love of all things beer/wine/champagne, I’m honestly not much of a liquor fan. With the exception of margaritas, which I adore with all my lush-loving heart, I very rarely will order a liquor drink. Change is good though, right?! Right! I’ll be adding the Gran Man slush to my World Showcase repertoire now. Honestly, while they don’t taste anything alike, it’s become the orange counterpart to a good frozen margarita for me. Two thumbs up!

I can’t remember the exact name, but that weekend was some kind of “live art in the garden” event, or something to that affect. It was cool because different artists were set up all around World Showcase, painting away.

We strolled along until we reached our lunch destination, Japan! We had reservations for Tokyo Dining, a place we hadn’t frequented since, maybe, 2007 or early 2008. I’m not sure why it took us so long to get back, as it’s a really great meal… and with such expansive views.

IMG_4295.jpg

IMG_4280.jpg

IMG_4283.jpg

Our lunch was delicious, although, we decided that when we return we’ll likely split a meal and maybe add a sushi app to it because it really was way too much fried food, otherwise. If you like tempura, I would definitely suggest you check out Tokyo Dining. And if you don't like tempura, I STILL suggest you check out Tokyo Dining, if not for the views and ambiance alone.

IMG_4291.jpg

I love that the kids’ meals come in a monorail OR maybe it’s a bullet train!

IMG_4289.jpg

Our server was excellent, and at the end of the meal she bestowed upon us a celebratory piece of ginger cake. With an origami heart (awwww :)).

I spent the better half of lunch trying to talk myself out of another purchase. But after we left the restaurant Brett somehow got ahead of me (likely while I was taking pictures) and when I caught up, he was buying Garden Minnie Mouse for me. Now it looks like all I need is a garden :lookaroun and we’ll be all set.

IMG_4307.jpg

IMG_4310.jpg

We left Epcot shortly after lunch and made our way to Downtown Disney to pick up some essentials from Basin. One can never have enough bath bombs, I say! Or body butter, for that matter. :lookaroun

IMG_0942.jpg

IMG_4316.jpg

While I love walking through Tren-D, I’ll probably never purchase something from the shop – the prices are becoming more and more ridiculous. Edna Mode has to be my favorite detail (in a store packed with detail)!
