As always, one's tolerance for speech increases greatly when one agrees with what is being said.

The sarcastic scare quotes (“science”) and snide locutions (“magic masks”) don’t exactly foster goodwill or civil discussion.

Nothing that @DisneyCane said in this particular post justified that kind of response. It's not the subject of masks that people here object to, but what is said about them. Yesterday, someone posted a somewhat impassioned plea for everyone to wear masks (#42,191) and no one objected to the subject of masks being discussed.

None of us want to be in some depressed, lockdown environment. But everyone needs to come around to addressing how best to work the problem...not talk about their personal hopes and dreams

Damn right...it’s amazing how going to church, school, and work spreads the virus, but protests seem to have no impact.

The latest published in the New York Times suggests that even schools are not super spreaders.

I guess this means that sending children to school is "following the science."

Maybe experience from the last few months also tells us that opening outdoor theme parks and strictly enforcing mask wearing and social distancing are not super spreader events?

Perhaps we should try to find out what indoor contact the infected people had related to the event. If you look at the photo that one of the newspapers did of where the people that ended up infected were sitting, many were quite far from each other (complete opposite corners of the seating in some cases). The President was nowhere near the audience.

There is no data that I know of relating to transmission at protests (or theme parks, for that matter), but I’ve no doubt that such gatherings have also contributed to the spread of the virus, particularly when people haven’t worn masks.

Without question it needed a response. There was no name calling just a plea to stop with the same diminishing data about masks. We not only have a right to correct someone on the facts but to try and stop the flow of bad information and data. I said in my response it’s his opinion and he’s entitled to it but when you constantly belittle data that is widely believed, with no links or studies to things you say here, it doesn’t do good for any of us.

Ok, cite the data that obesity and related issues doesn't drive health insurance premiums. Cite the data that not wearing "masks" during a pandemic does to a greater extent because that is what my post was about.

Also, cite the science and studies that indicate outoor environment are even moderate risk for spread.

Nothing in that post was opinion. You just decided to hone in on my sarcastic "magic masks" comment to get triggered about.

If they work so well, why can't there be large gatherings as long as people wear them?

Before throwing around insults you should look in the mirror because they likely apply to you more than the people you are directing them at. The most appropriate insult would get me banned from the forum so I'll refrain.

I like how easily triggered the "masks solve everything" crowd is. My post was factual about what drives health insurance premiums. For those of you who are constantly harping on the "science," there is no science that says that any outdoor scenario is a high transmission risk with or without "magic masks." The fact that there was no significant spread associated with the protests over the summer should be all the proof anybody needs about that.

From what I'm seeing in our district, the schools are being extraordinarily careful and new student infections are from events that are occurring outside of school. This leads me to believe it's people slacking on their vigilance with hand-washing, distancing, and mask-wearing.
