Disney (and others) at the Box Office - Current State of Affairs

I mentioned this the other day, I’ve seen more commercials for Snow White than any other Disney movie in years. They seem to be going all in on the marketing blitz.

Yes, it's noticeable how much they're plugging it. According to some early reporting, the production budget for it has gone past $250 Million, so they're in a fairly deep hole on this one. No wonder they're going big with marketing, they've already sunk a lot on production and over a year's worth of delays and rewrites and such.

This will be particularly interesting to watch how they market and launch this one. Especially after that frosty appearance Miss Zegler and Ms. Gadot were forced into at the Oscars last weekend! I saw a clip of it on YouTube, and.... Oof! A cold wind suddenly blew down Hollywood Blvd. last Sunday.

I can see Snow White doing $400-500 million, but not more in my opinion.

That was my original forecast also, now that I’ve seen opening weekend expectations of $50-60 million I’ve lowered my number. Opening week usually accounts for 1/3 to 1/2 of total domestic gross, that puts it around $100-180 million domestically, should be similar international numbers so now my guess is $250-350 million.

My original expectation was a $50 million loss (based on a $500 million break even point), now I think it’s going to be closer to a $200 million loss. Will be interesting to see how it plays out in reality vs expectations.

What I find interesting is that they all focus mostly on the evil queen with 1 clip of the dwarfs at the end.

I seem to be getting the one that starts out in 4:3 with the original animation and then morphs into 16:9 with the new CG animation. Shows SW dancing in the cottage with the dwarfs, etc. If I didn’t know better I’d suspect it was a shot for shot remake with little to no changes from the original.

I’d love to know how the algorithms decide what to show to who.

It’s creepy how often I’ll talk to someone about something and I instantly start getting ads for that specific item. Targeted advertising is amazingly accurate.

I don’t know how it decides someone who watches videos about theme parks movies and shows he watched when he was a kid needs to see the same add about the evil queen over and over either.

I had been seeing it would be a private press event instead of a public one, so if that's going to be in Spain that probably makes sense. And if you think about it, its probably for the best as it would keep down any of the drama that a public premiere would have.

I don’t know how it decides someone who watches videos about theme parks movies and shows he watched when he was a kid needs to see the same add about the evil queen over and over either.

I’m not surprised either of us are getting Disney ads based on our watch histories , just odd you’re getting villain ads while I’m getting traditional ads, I’m the cranky old man who doesn’t like Zegler, you’d think they’d be sending me the ads that barely show her.

Yeah I’m not surprised I’m getting Snow White ads. Just that I keep getting the same one over and over. I do like the villains a lot though but how could the algorithm possibly know that? I’ve haven’t watched anything about them in a while.

I was shown a video about the Pixar theory one time when I was really young and now I’m a full blown conspiracy theorist when it comes to the world of film. So yeah just goes to show how you can see one thing online and suddenly it’s your new favorite thing.

Interesting. The article says it will be at a castle and, “a more elaborate showing at the “fairytale” venue.” I would’ve expected that to be more than a private press event. Sounds like they’re trying to make it seem big without it actually having to be big (in attendance at least).
