Big thanks for all the recent reviews added here!

I am very much looking forward to my first trip out there to CA this May.

Someone has told me that Dl is closing at 6PM on Sunday, May 20th for a event. I thought the Pirates event was in April...or has it been changed?

Does anyone know what is going on that day? I am a bit dissapointed, as it would have been my only night to see "Remember" in the flesh ( and not on dvd!)

I've thought about this one for a while, and I think I found the 3 things that must happen for me to have a good time at DCA... maybe some of you can take some insight from this.

#1- Arrive Drunk
#2- Remain Drunk
#4- Leave Drunk

Short of running in and out during the peak season to see the Electrical Parade, that's about all I think of to make that park enjoyable.

So, what happened to #3?

To the OP, I hope you enjoy your trip to DCA! We've always had fun while we are there and it's one of our favorite places to be. Our last trip was 2005 and last year we went to WDW and we are heading there next month as well, but we felt like we needed a bit of Californina too so have a trip booked there in September of this year.

The Pirates premiere is May 19th, and that is when DL closes at 6PM.

How come you aren't able to see Remember any other day?

Part of the drunk gag... sorry, I thought it'd be funnier last night :)

The other saving grace... the Maseca dog in the Mission Tortilla Factory.
I love the Maseca dog!! He's the best part (besides the amazing tortillas!)

I was under the impression that "Remember" only plays on weekends in the off-season. Perhaps this is not the case? I know at WDW the fireworks show(s) happen every night regardless of season. I would assume the same is for D-Land, but after hearing about the off-season change, i was'nt sure!

So what' the REAL deal...is it nightly, or only on the weekends (off season)?

Methinks it is because of Anaheim city regulations - no fireworks on school nights. But that doesn't make sense for Sunday's now. They may have gotten that lifted or eased. I remember back in the day in the off season it was only on Fri-Sat.

Now that I've gotten back from my first trip out west I have to say that I'm glad some people talked down on this park.

It made my expectations very low, and I came away from it with a smile on my face. Sure, the Paradise Pier is a bit carnivalish, and we have a lot of the rides at our park, but I still liked everything about the park.

See, this is why I tell people to go with low expectations. I'm glad you had fun! You were blessed with some amazing weather this past week!

And how! I don't know if I'm going to be able to go back to buses and monorails after staying at the GCH though.

DCA is the one Disney park where you do have to go in with incredibly low expectations. With the others, you can go in with high expectations and still have those expectations met and have the time of your life.

Not entirely true, for the longest time, both the Studios and Animal Kingdom were only half day parks.

It is true, because I'm referring to the parks now, not how they used to be. For what it's worth though (and since you bring it up), it didn't take the Studios or Animal Kingdom five years before they were worthwhile parks. DCA has now been open for five years and it's still a very weak park.

Hi Figments Friends! *waves*

I leave tomorrow at 6am for my trip to DL/DCA, it's my second trip there :) I went last summer too.

Let's see.. DCA in general is.. well.. DCA. I went really wanting to like it, but ended up not very impressed with it. It is not Epcot by any stretch of the imagination.

It looks bigger on TV and in photos. The place is very small, especially compared to Epcot. If you can get your mind wrapped around the idea that the paradise pier lagoon is the size of one of Epcot's smaller ponds, then you have the perspective more appropriate in your head. I was really bummed when I walked over there and saw how little that area really is.

For food, I did Pizza Oo Mow Mow which is adjoining Burger Invasion. Nothin amazing, but it was edible. In general, food selection in California (both DL and DCA) was less then what we're used to at WDW. They sell pickles from the carts and churros are everywhere.

Oo, if you splurge goto Storytellers in the Grand Californian Hotel. I had a good lunch there one day of my last trip.

For rides.. You have to see Golden Dreams, because its just like DCA's thematic tribute to California. It's a bit ridiculous, and if you didn't think Californian were a little self-absorbed prior to it, you certainly will afterward. Really, it's a show for Californians by Californians that proclaims that California is the be all end all of the world. Plus, Whoopi Goldberg goes around sort of being an angel of death. "Oh look, there's Whoopi! They're gonna die" happens more then once.

Whoopi Goldberg, terrorizing Californians throughout history.

Real rides! The Monsters Inc attraction is cute. It's like a fantasyland dark ride, so don't expect anything uber-amazing. It's nice though. DL's fantasyland dark rides put the MK ones to shame though, so maybe it's more like a MK darkride.

Sun Wheel, meh. Good views I guess. Nothing in the pier was particularly grand. If you like coasters get a FP for Screamin, it got an "it was ok.." from my other half, who loves both coasters and SSE (almost obsessively).

Do the weird little things! The Tortilla factory was sorta dull, but it had food. The Sourdough Bread factory was much cooler, I kinda wish we had it, and it had free food too!

Aladdin was a nice show. I like Nemo the Musical and the old Hunchback show better, but it is a pretty good show. I rank it higher then Beauty and the Beast.

The animation building was neat. Wander through that, my favorite part was just the entrance room with all the screens. It was nifty.

Grizzly takes up a ton of the park. You spend most of your time walking around it. Ironicly though, you can't really see the bear's head from any good angle in the park *shrug*.

The parades there are neat. Try to catch one.

You'll probably find the music a little jarring. Not the standard Disney ambient music, but moreso lyric based songs and such. Sort of like a radio being left on.

The elephants at the entrance of Hollywood Pictures Backlot are flat out hideous. Avert your eyes and try not to look, they're like medusa, except you wont turn to stone but rather be baffled by how anyone could paint something in such hideous colors.

The area around Soarin is neat, but pretty small except for Soarin. Not much else to do there.

If you can find "Seasons of the Vine" I hear it's decent. I can't find it or anyone to turn it on - you apparently have to ask because it's so unpopular/unknown.

Bugs Land - cute, but the kid play areas are a complete waste. I recommend doing a quick scenic walkthrough, don't bother with the rides unless one really speaks to you (maybe the ferris-wheel type thing with chinese takeout boxes) and walk right back out.

Getting to DL for food or something from DCA is really easy. The space seperating the two parks is the size of Epcot's entry plaza. I stayed at the GCH and walked through DCA from the private entrance (by Grizzly) to get to DL most every day. Took less then 15 mins with security checks.

Have fun, but don't expect much from DCA. I got assigned a room with the DCA view (free upgrade) and threw open my window screens to see the Pier and it was... underwhelming. It's just not a pretty park. It's trying too hard to be hip and trendy, though some areas have marked improvements.

I think the person who designed it was color blind. More ugly elephants then classic Disney style.

I agree about the music...the Beach Boys songs get really old and annoying! :brick:

imo, I think Paradies Pier at night is beautiful! I love the lights!

About the size of the park, you have to remember that it came from a parking lot! I think it's amazing that they did everything from what they had. It's not like Florida where you guys have acres upon acres of land to build on.

Can't wait till they start re-working on DCA...I think it's going to be a solid park in 5-10 years!

Have a great trip!! :) Pack for very warm weather!! It has been high 80s to mid 90s for the past week and will continue to be like this for the rest of the week! There might also be some smoke when you arrive...we had a big fire yesturday...the air quality is awful right now.

If you want, ride the Tomorrowland side of the Matterhorn and keep an eye out for the Submarine Lagoon. It's filled with water now and looks wonderful! You might even see a sub in motion!

Animal Kingdom opened in 1998 and IMHO did not become a full day park until the additions of Expedition Everest and the Finding Nemo stage show in 2006.

That's eight years by my count.

Hey there MouserMerf: Thanks for your honest review..much appreciated. Hope you are having fun out there on the West Coast while i keep an eye on things here in FL! I'll be back in the Parks tomorrow to check out some things....

I will agree that i have always felt that MGM and AK were weak, half-day Parks. For years i have referred to them as "Pointless Parks" ( only visit if you really have the time, but don't go in with overly high expectations.). Only very recently i have warmed to AK more, and it is not because of the addition of EE and Nemo Musical funnily enough. Dunno..i just like AK better then i did...seems the area has developed a little more. It's still a half-day Park though...and by 3/4 i head out to EPCOT usually. MGM has nothing of real appeal to me now. Once the Animation Dept was kicked out, the Park lost it's last major attraction in my mind ( i am not a thrill ride fan..). It seems so lame now...it's not even a real studio in any sense now!

Getting back to DCA...yeah i have been warned to go in with a very open mind, which i plan on doing. I think one HAS to do this expecially when being so used to the situation here in Orlando. I am very much looking forward to it though....can hardly wait until May!!

Again, big thanks to everyone who has noted ideas and offered insight so far!
