Year Of A Million Dreams Has Been Cancelled!!!

What are you talking about, merf? The promotion is WILDLY successful. Disney management themselves have repeatedly mentioned as such. I don't need a "track record" but tomorrow you can call Disney and ask them yourself how much of a joke this is. And go ahead and look closer at those pics you posted yesterday or the day before...your guy who is "spouting what the hub says" may know more than you think - at least on this issue.

To clear any argument before it happens:
DisneySaint apparently has good authority to be arguing his point, too.

There were plans to extend the YoMD to next year. That may have been what was cancelled. I don't know any of the details. I called someone who said, "Yep, but we don't know too much right now."

At this point, everyone--myself included--is going to have to wait for more information.

Well, not to be petty - but those are part of the YOMD's. You don't like them i don't like them, and other people don't like them.

And for disboards - same folks who love the wand. Look how that worked out.

Also, why DL-fans dislike the YOMD's has something to do with the Disney Gallery. I dunno what/why/how because i ignored that story, but now i'll research and find out. Apparently the YOMD's was somehow going to close that beloved location.

I honestly still think this is just MiceAge (or whatever the site is) just has a not-so-magical story to report and, when it's finally posted, will be something along the lines of:

"The YOMD is officially over. On 6/28/07, we encounted a bad experience when..."

But please believe when I say the YOMD has been a great success (WDW Reasearch has shown it). I, personally, think it's a fabulous promotion and very unique in that it actually focusses attention on the guests. My only wish was that the promotion would have been advertised more b/c I feel a lot of people simply don't know what's going on!

Thanks for this post, Monty.
I'd like to see your evidence, merf, about how terrible this promotion is. Go ahead and link over to your favorite forum containing a YOMD board (Disboards is one of them) and read about all the magical moments people have received. If that doesn't sell you, you should have seen in your own work location by now the magic created for the guests.

That's not empirical evidence any more that is people on other boards saying how much they hate it.

To me it seems a fairly pointless promotion. Who's going to schedule a trip down to WDW or DL based on the mere possibility they may win an extra Fastpass or even a free night in Cinderella Castle? It has also very much run its course by now and they need to move on. WDW had Everest open last year and Epcot's 25th at the end of this year, while DL has just had the Finding Nemo subs and Pirates Tom Sawyer Island redos open. Presumably they can find enough in all of that for decent promotional campaigns without the YOAMD message.

Where it crossed the line from pointless but benign to annoying were the recent rumors of converting the Disney Gallery at DL into another apartment to be randomly handed out to guests each day. That crossed the line into taking things away from most guests for the benefit of one family a day.

There is a story that they're going to renovate it into a Cinderella Suite, for the YOAMD.

If that were the driving factor for change, wouldn't they just cancel that plan?

I've not met a single guest in all my time at WDW that was there for the Year of a Million Dreams. Now, with that being said, I do meet a lot of guests who joke about "winning a night in the castle," so that ONE aspect of this marketing campaign has been successful, but that is the only thing that I have heard guests mention about this deal. So yes, the castle suite was a good idea, so kudos to marketing for that, but the rest of this campaign sure seems to be a waste of money. Hell, most guests think the Dream Fastpasses are for sale in the park Universal-style!

I think marketing has realized this and has decided to cut their losses and end this thing on time this September like originally planned. So I guess one could say that the YOMD has been "cancelled" from that point of view. Still, I do believe the Dream Squad will be doing their thing and the remaining commercials will be airing as planned until September.

Now, the "Disney Parks" advertising? That crap is on its way out, and FAST!

I believe it's over because Disney has exhausted their million dreams...

by virtue of fulfilling the wish of a million wand-haters... :lookaroun

(maybe that's the secret reason, I dunno)

I'd love to see the Dream Squad handing out hammers. "Yeah we need 6 mallets for the Johnson family from Tupelo, MS over here pronto. Over"

:D :D :D

I'll just leak what I've been sitting on...

YoaMD may be coming to a premature close, but let's just say every cloud has a SILVER lining! Can't say much more than that, but you'll soon see that all of Disney marketing has been put on hold and is going the FULL 25 YARDS--for a full 18 months! You all know about a certain magical instrument being dismantled somewhere in WDW, but soon enough we'll also see something else in that park's entrance plaza getting LAID TO REST! Plus, opening its doors October 1--something big is on the HORIZON for the land currently occupied by Mission: Space! And don't look now, but you might be seeing some old friends that may or may not rhyme with "LAVILION POGOS"! It's no wonder us good folks at Disney marketing are dropping everything to start anew--why stop at a million dreams? We've just begun!

Oh, and don't forget your daily dose of NaCl in case none of this ever, ever comes to pass! :D

So, the YOAMD will only last one year and then there will be a 25th anniversary celebration for Epcot that will last 18 months? We know that the wand is coming down, and hopefully the Leave a Legacy "tomb stones" will be removed as well. And in celebration of Epcot's silver anniversary, the original pavilion logos will return?
If so, it all sounds very good. I hope they keep some aspects of the YOAMD, such as the Dream Fastpasses and awarding the castle suite.
Thanks for the hints - I have some salt handy.

I can understand what you're saying but I think it was created more to make magic for the guests already in Orlando than to entice people to come back. Attendance in 2007 has been record-shattering, so really, why do they NEED more people? They just want the people to come back. Mickey Ears and Lanyards make for great souvenirs and magic moments and the Dream Fastpasses make for a great day for a family. I really think it's a tool for creating memories for the guests.

If it does get cancelled, I don't think they're just going to kill it right away. I think they will let it slowly die out. Like someone said earlier, they still have all the free stuff (ears, lanyards, etc) to get rid of.

Say watcha want...... My wife and I went on our birthday which happens to be on the same day and while ordering a turkey legs in future world 2 of the best CMs Ive ever had the pleasure of meeting asked me how my day has gone with the lines.... This was during spring break in FL... I said we've had some long waits... they said "may we make a wish come true for you and put you at the front of all of your favoreite rides" (we did sign a release and had pictures taken) YES!!!! we got ultimate fastpasses..... pic proof to prove it for all of you naysayers...... YOMD is a great thing its a shame to get rid of it.

I personally dont think that YOMD is a promotion that drew more than a dozen or so people in, just for the promotion. Promotions like free dining draw crowds. People dont see the YOMD commercial on television and say,"Hey, lets go to WDW for 7 days because we have a 1 in 1 gazillion chance to stay in the Castle." YOMD is a feel good promotion, not a draw crowds promotion like the 50th Celebration was.
