Year Of A Million Dreams Has Been Cancelled!!!

I'm coming to this thread late, so this may have been covered.

As I am told, the YoaMD isn't being cancelled, it simply won't be extended beyond this initial phase. Some advertising and decorations will be going away.
What IS being killed off (thankfully) seems to be Rasulo's global parks structure. I'm hearing that has been totally put out if it's misery. Expect the "Where Dreams Come True" and "Disney Parks" promo stuff to disappear.
That's good enough for me, I'm not the biggest fan of YOMD, so I'll settle with it running its course and fading out.

I am happy to hear that the DisneyParks globalization crap is going the way of the Dodo. That always seemed tacky, cheap and below the Disney quality level to do in my opinion.

First of all, I'll be the first to admit...I DON'T KNOW A DAMN THING!
I don't know anybody in management, I don't know any Imagineers, I don't even know a single monorail driver! So everything *I* say is just a hunch. Feel free to say you think I'm wrong, but at least I'm honest..
Quote of the week. Brilliant!

You know Marti the only bad thing about your naked dance is that Disney Security might not look fondly on it and give you the permanent boot from Epcot and I for one would hate to see that....hehe:lol:

Precisely. I'm arriving to this thread very late, but I just want to voice my approval for the end of the "Disney Parks" branding nonsense. I always hated that. Heck, even SIX FLAGS doesn't do it that way. I'll be very happy to be able to get park specific merchandise again.

I really don't care one way or the other about the YOMD, but am quite happy to see the end of "Disney Parks."

Ok... so if in fact YOMD is ending on it's "normal date"... when exactly was/is this date?

Wouldn't it be in fact later this fall? Around Sept/Oct? Or do I have my dates wrong?

I agree that YOMD could never just "disappear" but if it's slated closure was in fact, lets say september, it would make sense for Disney to start winding down the hype and decorations.

Just looking for clarification!

I won two dream fastpasses on my trip in January... but the parks were so dead, there was no need for them. The CM at star tours laughed when I tried to use it.

It stinks... Unless you are married and have 2.5 kids and are the typical 'disney' american family.

If you dont fit the above.. you dont get jack.

Do you have an anecdote? This is not supposed to happen, so I wonder if you had an experience where you felt like you were ignored in favor of a family or so it happening to someone else. The one dream I got was mouse ears as I was exiting Peter Pan's flight. The CM who was handing them out had an open box with about 50 mouse ears and was handing them out in order to everyone as they exited the ride. Very democratic. A few adults did the slight "pitcher telling the catcher they don't want to throw the curve now" no head shake and they were skipped, but otherwise everyone who wanted got ears.

We've also got a few prizes via mail, but they have no way of knowing if our household is a typical nuclear family or not.

He was talking about the BIG prizes, like the Cinderella Suite.

Im so glad the Disney Parks stupid stuff is going away..

Who wants to come home with a "DISNEY PARKS" bag rather than a disney world bag. Its more magical to have something say Disney World on it than stupid Disney Parks.. that was getting on my nerves

Which is entirely based on conjecture. The rules state the prizes are awarded randomly. The Dream Squad CMs that have talked about it say the prizes are awarded randomly. But because Disney's advertising has concentrated on showing 'standard' families as winners, the conspiracy theorists of the World insist that they deliberately avoid same-$ex couples and non-'standard' families such as single-parents, etc... No-one has or could provide empirical evidence to prove such theories, but they get a lot of mileage anyway.

Wow, you care about what your bag says?

They are stated to be given out randomly. But I know that the Dream Squad gets directives that say things like 'the first family to sit on bench X wins Y'. So it might be random, but someone sitting alone on the bench wouldn't qualify to win.

::Sigh:: that's incorrect, sir... In the event of a bench giveaway, it always refers to a single person, now if it is just one person on the bench, hozannah, it works easily, in the event of two people, the contest will specify a side (right or left)

Which was also my understanding. Prizes are awarded either to everybody in a certain area [lanyards, hats & FPs] or, in the case of single prizes, to a specific individual.

Maybe this has changed, but I know that in the first month of the YOAMD it specified certain things. Anything from family to child to adult.

I'm a little puzzled by so many of you applauding the headline "Year Of A Million Dreams Has Been Cancelled." A large number of those who have done so, also say that they should be celebrating WDW's 35th Anniversary or Epcot's 25th.

The problem with that is the average person has been beyond confused by the yearly celebrations involving anniversaries. They went from celebrating WDW's 25th, to 100 Years of Magic, to 50 Years of Disney Parks...which to the average person is confusing.

Staying away from anniversary celebrations for a few years is a good idea in my opinion. The Year of A Million Dreams was a great departure from that. And to those of you who say that it is not an incentive for people to visit the parks...I beg to differ. Since the promotion launched, guest numbers at the parks have increased significantly. And coming from someone who works at a radio station, I know that all you need to do is say you're giving anything away (and I do mean ANYTHING) and people show up!

Oh and lastly...some comments have been said about having only traditional families win prizes as part of the Year Of A Million Dreams...but I can pretty much guarauntee that at least 10% of the prizes have gone to none "traditional" families. :animwink:

Actually I do care. If I have paid $0000's which I do a couple of times a year to travel from the UK to Disney and I buy gifts for people back home I want a bag that says WDW not just Disney Park's. It's cheap and generic I am spending lot's of money and at the end of day it costs Disney no more money to get Resort specific bags because they are are not getting anymore savings then they would already be getting from the number they order. Hopefully the resort cups will make a come back too. All this gentrification is cheap, nasty and makes me spend less. If I am spending less I am sure many more are too. Infact on my trip last month I spent very little. I am going to Disneyland for the first time in Nov and if all the merch is Disney Parks crap why would I bother to buy it? It isn't anything special to Disneyland. The bags were the start then it started to spread to T-Shirts and various other items. I hope to see them all in the outlet store very soon where most likely they will not sell and then they will end up in the 50cent bins at the next curb sale at Prime outlets!
