Year Of A Million Dreams Has Been Cancelled!!!

I'm a little puzzled by so many of you applauding the headline "Year Of A Million Dreams Has Been Cancelled." A large number of those who have done so, also say that they should be celebrating WDW's 35th Anniversary or Epcot's 25th.

The problem with that is the average person has been beyond confused by the yearly celebrations involving anniversaries. They went from celebrating WDW's 25th, to 100 Years of Magic, to 50 Years of Disney Parks...which to the average person is confusing.

Staying away from anniversary celebrations for a few years is a good idea in my opinion. The Year of A Million Dreams was a great departure from that. And to those of you who say that it is not an incentive for people to visit the parks...I beg to differ. Since the promotion launched, guest numbers at the parks have increased significantly. And coming from someone who works at a radio station, I know that all you need to do is say you're giving anything away (and I do mean ANYTHING) and people show up!

Oh and lastly...some comments have been said about having only traditional families win prizes as part of the Year Of A Million Dreams...but I can pretty much guarauntee that at least 10% of the prizes have gone to none "traditional" families. :animwink:

I do believe that are probably not going to extend Year of A Million Dreams and they will realize their big mistake of ignoring Epcot's 25th. So I would say we should hear an announcement by August.

Sorry what is confusing about a celebration that clearly states what's being celebrated? Year of a million dreams is celebrating nothing except the greed of some people and some peoples sense of entitlement when it comes to winning. At the end of the day I always have special moments when I go to the parks and getting a cheap gift from a cast member wouldn't a be a dream come true, it would be a manufactured moment that wouldn't be special. A special moment is when a cast member does something or says something great that makes me feel special or valued, or I see a CM do this for someone and it makes me feel good that they made someone happy.

In Accurate Information...!?

I'M NEW TO THE BOARD AND THIS IS MY FIRST POST...I HAVE ALWAYS ENJOYED READING THE BOARDS, I GET A REAL KICK OUT OF THE BANTER BETWEEN THE MEMBERS...
TO THE POINT...I TOOK MY LAST TRIP TO WDW IN JUNE, 2007 AND I THOURGHLY ENJOYED THE ATMONSPHERE SURROUNDING THE "YEAR OF A MILLION DREAMS"
THE ACTUAL NOTE THAT CAME FROM MICEAGE WAS "7/7: LUCKY US! BREAKING NEWS: THE "WHERE DREAMS COME TRUE" DECOR (FLAGS, BANNERS)
WILL BEGIN TO BE REMOVED FROM DISNEYLAND BEGINING THIS WEEK. CONSIDER IT A EARLY ANNIVERSARY PRESENT FROM MR. LASSETER. MORE TO COME LATER AFTER 7/11.- AL LUTZ
SO...WHAT DOES ANY OF THAT STATEMENT HAVE TO DO WITH WDW AND WHY DOES EVERYONE SEEM TO HAVE SUCH A PROBLEM WITH "YEAR OF A MILLION DREAMS"

So essentially Rasulo's entire plan for the division has just been scrapped?

Yes.

Also, everything Lee has said is exactly what I was told at 2 AM. This news took many people by surprise, and we were trying to figure out what was happening.

Consider Lee's post authoritative.

Year To Year

Sorry what is confusing about a celebration that clearly states what's being celebrated? Year of a million dreams is celebrating nothing except the greed of some people and some peoples sense of entitlement when it comes to winning. At the end of the day I always have special moments when I go to the parks and getting a cheap gift from a cast member wouldn't a be a dream come true, it would be a manufactured moment that wouldn't be special. A special moment is when a cast member does something or says something great that makes me feel special or valued, or I see a CM do this for someone and it makes me feel good that they made someone happy.

It's confusing because to the average guest, they see an add that Disney is celebrating 25 years, then 100 years, then 50 years. I have heard that comment from MANY people and I can certainly understand their confusion.

Oh and I guess getting a gift for your birthday from a loved one isn't very magical, since it's a "manufactured moment."

I think that people doing nice things for others and sharing gifts with them doesn't happen in our every day world...and it is precisely the type of world we'd all dream of living in. :D

As I said, working for a local radio station, I see how offering free gifts of any kind gets loads of people to turn out...but there are always a few who gripe about the FREE gift they got from you. Be happy with what you get, especially if it is a free gift that is given to you in kindness! :)

Do we have July fools day now? As usual, we need more information before we can really start talking. But if it is true, something BIG must have happened for Disney to change their minds so suddenly. With one breath, management is crediting higher park attendance to the YOaMD, and in the next breath they're cancelleing this "successful" campaign? Maybe Al Lutz is just trying to stir all the Disney fans up while he's away on vacation. He's probably having a great time doing it.

On a semi-related note: I saw the DreamSquad in Epcot on 6/29, in the Germany pavilion. They had alrready cornerned one family, who didn't look like they had a clue who the DreamSquad was. I have no idea what was being given away, but we didn't win anything all week.

Which addresses an interesting point...

Why is Al Lutz getting a pass on this one?

His already-questionable credibility should now be null and void for reporting that the Year of a Million Dreams was cancelled... Instead of issuing a retraction, or even saying "oops, I jumped the gun a bit" he is doing his best to hide the offending (and WRONG) remark with a new statement. I have always been a proponent of hanging him up by his thumbs, but this could quite possibly be a new low for a man who long ago exchanged his shovel for a backhoe.

He got everyone all riled up about the contest going away, then, when I am sure someone of substance called him on his idiocy, stated they are taking down a few banners and changing a few bags.

Attn: WDWMagic forum members - Micechat fans already drank the Kool-Aid, we need to be the responsible ones and hold him to the tripe he reports.

Well, it's 12:30 pm ET and they're still running the YOAMD ads on the Disney site. Strange.

As I said, the year of a million dreams things won't be stopped immediately. They've already paid for quite a bit of marketing for certain areas so its easier to let it run its course than to pull them, but they're just going to let this celebration slowly fizzle away and it will not be renewed. So you can expect to continue to see some year of a million dreams things, it just won't go past the original deadline.

Another tidbit I've heard is that it also sounds like a certain high level executive is stepping down. They're just waiting to figure out the severance package. There's been no official word to who this is, but if I may take some liberty and put two and two together, well I think his name probably rhymes with Kasulo.

So it has been officially cancelled?

No.

The extention of it has been cancelled and Al Lutz of MiceAge is reporting that they are taking down the YOAMD bannera at Disneyland, not WDW.

WDW appears unaffected by this horse-doodie.

AGAIN, this is DISNEYLAND we're talking about, not the far-superior, larger, world-wide vacation destination known as the WALT DISNEY WORLD RESORT.

Stupid comment since a gift from a loved one has been thought about and selected with you in mind. A "gift" from the dream squad is selected by a computer and is being given to loads of people that day and has been created as a marketing gimmick.

I think that people doing nice things for others and sharing gifts with them doesn't happen in our every day world...and it is precisely the type of world we'd all dream of living in. :D

Yes we all dream of a world were we get some crap mickey ears :brick: What a awful world you live in were no one does anything for others. I wonder how many people who are given the 2 tinker bell pins pass one on to a stranger to be nice? I think very few as people are selfish and would keep both or give it someone in their party.

Be happy with what you get, especially if it is a free gift that is given to you in kindness! :)
You seem to have misunderstood the Year of a Million dreams "gifts" are not given in kindness they are given to you because a computer has told a person to hand a specified item to a person or persons in a specified area. It's a cheap marketing campaign to gullible people to make them feel special. If someone thinks a marketing gimmick creates special moments then that's pretty sad i my view. Special magical moments are created by people doing something that they decided to do not something that is dictated by a computer program.

Ok. I finally made it to the end of this thread in one sitting! It grew about two pages as I was reading too!

I'm glad that the Disney Parks branding is going away. Yet as for the YoMD, we didn't witness much activity. We were there this past Thanksgiving and we didn't even see the Dream Squad the entire time we were there (about 1 week). The only thing we saw was about 3 families with the sky blue hats.
We had a great time as always, but it would be fun if Epcot got it's 25th celebration this upcoming year.
Yeah for the wand coming down!!:sohappy:

I'm coming to this thread late, so this may have been covered.

As I am told, the YoaMD isn't being cancelled, it simply won't be extended beyond this initial phase. Some advertising and decorations will be going away.
What IS being killed off (thankfully) seems to be Rasulo's global parks structure. I'm hearing that has been totally put out if it's misery. Expect the "Where Dreams Come True" and "Disney Parks" promo stuff to disappear.

Nice to hear about that. I never liked the "Disney Parks" promotion. WDW>DL. :D

I agree. I started going to Disney in 2000 and for the past 7 years I was tottally baffled. I'd look at pins from 2000 and see 50 yrs., then from 2002 and see 100 yrs., etc. Had I not finally decided that I wanted to research more about Walt and Disneyworld, I'd still be in the dark on what they were celebrating. I think the internet geeks seem to forget that we are the huge minority of Disney lovers. Your average person doesn't come home from a Disney trip and check the comptrollers website for rehab information. :hammer:

I think if were going to celebrate yearly events, then they should be resort specific. Unless its similar to the HCOE where the resorts were all coming together to celebrate anothers anniversary.
