With the increase in minimum wage, is over 10% still expected? Increased minimum wage, increased in overall dining, and I am still expected to tip over 18%. I am sorry, not being scrooge, but shouldn’t tipping go down with the increase in wage?
You realize that wait staff don't make minimum wage, right, or have you never worked at or known a person in the service industry? What a charmed life.

If you have been following my post, which it seems you have not, the claim that is being distorted is a simple one.
With the increase in the tipped wage, is it ok to decrease tipping to a lower percent.

My first job at 15 years old was washing dishes, and the wait staff I know now, is angry about the increase in the tipped wage, but not for reasons related to reduction in tips. They are mostly making less now because of the reduction in hours, less people dining, and the diversion created by an increase of responsibility during shifts.

Now that minimum wage earners have won the war in Fight for 15, they can now expect to get round ups like the Europeans.

Federal minimum wage is still $7.25.

Even with a COLA to deal with inflation since 2008, the minimum would only be around $10.

There are professional servers who choose the job because of how much they make from tips. They didn’t invent the system; they chose it because it works for them.

If the system changes, all or most servers will be entry-level minimum wage workers. As I said, that would be fine for basic restaurants but it would hurt the quality of service at high-end steakhouses or places like Topolino’s.

There isn’t any right or wrong here; different people like different things.

Paying your workers a decent wage will not make the quality of your business go down... Because one can literally still leave a tip. The concept of working while EXPECTING a tip is what is wrong with our culture. They should be paid a decent wage, and tipping should be for above and beyond service. Simple as that.

Is it ever going to change to that? Nah.

But going back to the mandatory gratuity, you're not getting a gratuity on top of the gratuity.

You don’t have to leave a gratuity on top of a mandatory gratuity. But you can add to it if you like.

The OP was complaining about the mandatory gratuity. It’s really a service charge that’s added for large parties. You can leave more if you like, but not less.

I’ve dined with large parties many, many times at Disney. I’ve also had automatic gratuities added under the old TIW card. You’re not expected to leave any more than that, but it’s up to you if you want to do so.

Yeah, being cheap regardless of age isn't something to be proud of. There is a large difference between being frugal and being cheap.
Where did I say I dont tip at restaurants? Quote me on that. 🤷‍♂️

Just because I dont agree with the system doesnt mean I dont "play by the rules."

How is it the customers responsibility to pay you extra just because the job you're choosing to do screws you over? If you give good service you'll generally get tips but acting entitled to them is exactly how you don't get any.

People like this is why places should just get rid of tips increase costs which will end up being more expensive to eat out.... Every study shows it. Pathetic

I would rather pay extra for a meal if that meant getting out of mandatory tipping culture. All these countries have it figured out except us.

Crazy that yall side with evil business practice. Blame your bosses. Not me.

I am sorry, but this is exactly what has happened, are you not following the debate?

Instead of getting rid of tips, tipped wage went up, increasing dining expense. With servers making more, it is common knowledge that tipping has been reduced. I also empathized with wait staff with the unintended negative effects of the increase in the tipped wage, but at the end of the day, 18-20% tipping is becoming an outdated practice, especially with the tipped wage continuing to increase.

My issue when it comes to people who don't tip servers due to "bad service" is whether it is try

Tipping servers 10% no matter where you are makes you small. And cheap.
How you treat the waitstaff shows you everything about a person.... I've found this true for decades.... You can't argue with these types.... They are dead wrong but they are cheap/small.

So you want to switch to a system where you HAVE to pay more money...from a system where you get the choice on how much more you spend?

You want to change to a system where the business has to charge the customer more due to increased insurance costs and taxes which will be passed on to....you the customer?

Maybe we need that Wonders guy to elevate the debate 😉
Again, I am not against tipping. The argument has been made that without tips the cost of restaurants will increase, and I am suggesting this is happening now, with the increase in wage and fees. Reducing tips is a balance. I don’t think I should tip on the transaction credit card fee of 2%. So, I think 18% is too high now, you think 10% is too low. Maybe the answer is somewhere in the middle.
