With the increase in minimum wage, is over 10% still expected? Increased minimum wage, increased in overall dining, and I am still expected to tip over 18%. I am sorry, not being scrooge, but shouldn’t tipping go down with the increase in wage?
You realize that wait staff don't make minimum wage, right, or have you never worked at or known a person in the service industry? What a charmed life.

If you have been following my post, which it seems you have not, the claim that is being distorted is a simple one.
With the increase in the tipped wage, is it ok to decrease tipping to a lower percent.

My first job at 15 years old was washing dishes, and the wait staff I know now, is angry about the increase in the tipped wage, but not for reasons related to reduction in tips. They are mostly making less now because of the reduction in hours, less people dining, and the diversion created by an increase of responsibility during shifts.

I can see why the manager may have been a bit confused then. If you wanted to leave 25%, you could have just added to the tip.

He was probably trying to explain that you that the 18% didn’t have to be the complete gratuity if you obviously wanted to add more.
Everything you're saying is wrong and nobody is siding with you.

It’s customary in this country. Many servers do not work steady hours or are “cut” when restaurants are not busy. They aren’t to blame for the system.
They are to blame for choosing that job tho. Go work at chickfila or bucees. They pay great.

If people stop working for restaurants because of "the system," the system will change. Neither the consumer nor the waitstaff have to abide by "the system."

tell your boss to pay you a living wage. Tips are only required for exceptional service. 🤷‍♂️

What is great pay to you? You are probably the same guy who walks into a restaurant, asks to be seated and is told you will have to wait(cause they are under staffed). You look around and say "but look at all those empty tables".

......For an entry level job that is supposed to be performed by high school and college students, the pay is great. Sorry for the need to clarify. Orlando has PLENTY of job opportunities that pay more than a job where you have to rely on tips.

The point of a tip is to give extra money to someone who provides above and beyond service... However, if the restaurant is already charging you 18 percent more than the food you ordered, then that is just an automatic tip. (Which is a bit absurd... Because if you had sh***y service, then there would be no tip.)

Do you not understand how tips work?

I am by no means rich... And I, myself, was a waiter in high school. Very briefly. Till I realized I could make more money on the stock crew at Walmart than at the restaurant I was working.

Pick and choose your battles. Nobody is obligated to tip. (Do I feel bad if I don't? Of course. I always tip if they do a good job. But if I'm sitting at the Red Lobster for 2 hours when there's only 6 tables in the building and you never once filled up my glass of water during said 2 hours, then no.... You sure as HECK aren't going to guilt me into paying an extra tip on top of an automatic gratuity fee. Just an example.)

Blame the restaurant/company owners. Not the tippers. The customers are not required to live up to your crappy restaurant owner's policies. Tips, while possibly an outdated thing, were designed to be a "thank you" for exceptional service. The customer is not responsible for your daily wage.

This whole debate on this forum is simply crazy.

Mandatory tipping is an incredibly stupid concept. At that point, owners should just increase the price of their food and pay their workers a living wage. Crazy concept.

...And yes, I am one of those people that only tips sit down restaurants. Don't spin your silly little iPad around at me if I am ordering from the counter and getting my own food and throwing my stuff away... I'll occasionally tip an Uber driver, or maid service.... If it's EXCEPTIONAL SERVICE.

The same is supposed to be said for waitstaff. I appreciate their hard work. But a tip is a tip.

Also......... Tips are only an issue in the United States. Obviously we're backwards.

Mandatory tipping sucks.

Now that minimum wage earners have won the war in Fight for 15, they can now expect to get round ups like the Europeans.

Federal minimum wage is still $7.25.

Even with a COLA to deal with inflation since 2008, the minimum would only be around $10.

Also, I leaned from Kevin McAllister that fruit stripe gum is acceptable as a basic tip…if it’s Rob Schneider who is serving you.

I’m sure the level of debate will improve now that you’re here to elevate it with insults and words like “ stupid,” “crazy” and “sucks.”

There are professional servers who choose the job because of how much they make from tips. They didn’t invent the system; they chose it because it works for them.

If the system changes, all or most servers will be entry-level minimum wage workers. As I said, that would be fine for basic restaurants but it would hurt the quality of service at high-end steakhouses or places like Topolino’s.

There isn’t any right or wrong here; different people like different things.

Above and beyond service is what earns a tip from you? If you are a regular at any restaurants...I sure as hell would not want to eat whatever you get served.

Good lord. I tip, guys. Above & beyond, I said, is for things like uber drivers and maid services. Twisting my words. Look at where I placed that. Restaurants are obviously a tip. Unless the service is bad. Bad service = no tip.

Would thy prefereth I speak the language of thine own ancient brethren?

Stupid, crazy, and sucks are WONDERFUL ways to describe tipping culture, my guy.

Paying your workers a decent wage will not make the quality of your business go down... Because one can literally still leave a tip. The concept of working while EXPECTING a tip is what is wrong with our culture. They should be paid a decent wage, and tipping should be for above and beyond service. Simple as that.

Is it ever going to change to that? Nah.

But going back to the mandatory gratuity, you're not getting a gratuity on top of the gratuity.

You don’t have to leave a gratuity on top of a mandatory gratuity. But you can add to it if you like.

The OP was complaining about the mandatory gratuity. It’s really a service charge that’s added for large parties. You can leave more if you like, but not less.

I’ve dined with large parties many, many times at Disney. I’ve also had automatic gratuities added under the old TIW card. You’re not expected to leave any more than that, but it’s up to you if you want to do so.

I don’t care, buy you don’t have to speak in ancient languages to be articulate. It just seems odd to complain about the level of debate when you’re not contributing anything of value.

Guy?

Uber drivers and maid services aren't an obvious tip? How about if you stay one night, how can the maid show you she is worthy of your tip? At this point I realize you aren't changing your ways but don't get mad at people for pointing out that you are how to put this... Very frugal and not exactly kind in a monetary sense to folks that rely on tips.
