I don't eat out much because honestly I cook better food than I get eating out. But when I do, I double my tax with come out to 20% most of the time.

Personally I find tipping to be ridiculous. If I order tea with a ham and cheese croissant for $15, a server takes the order,puts the order in, then bring it to me when its ready their expected tip is $3.

If I order the rib-eye with a glass of red wine for $60, same taking the order, same bringing me when ready and the expected tip is $12. A 300% increase for the same conversation, same steps, same everything.

I just find it to be a silly system.

Min wage for my state of tipped workers is 3.89.

That makes sense. Thanks for clarifying! If business is slow (not talking about Disney) and they send a server home 3 hours before the end of their scheduled 8-hour shift, what does the business pay for those 3 hours?

Another way to say this is to say that tipped employees have to earn at least min wage, but a portion of their tips can be counted as wages. So if $12 is the min wage in FL, then the restaurant can only count $3.02 of an employee's tips (per hour) towards the $12min wage. The employer always has to pay the employee at least $8.98 per hour. Though it looks like the FL min wage is set to keep going up by $1.00 every year on September 30th until it hits $15.00 on September 30, 2026, so I think it already is at $13.

Someone else claimed that employees can't afford to eat where they work, and that might be sorta true, but also sorta not true. Most restaurants make some effort to feed their employees. Big chains tend to give employees like 50% off or something like that, but they might limit the employee to food they actually eat during that shift. At some places, the chef might make up a platter(s) of food for the employees.

One small aspect of this thread that kinda bothers me about this thread is that waitstaff are not saints. There are great employees, and not so great employees. It is a tough job and just as with other CM's, kindness is in everyone's best interest, but employees are not saints. They sometimes do some really bad things.

You only get paid for the hours you work, no obligation to honor a schedule unless it's in a contract. Not sure if it's still legal but some places were charging a daily fee to be fed even if you didn't eat

Face———Dermatologist removed a dysplastic/abnormal mole many years back leaving a straight line .5 inch long surgery scar.

Years later a plastic surgeon did outstanding work neutralizing the scar left by the dermatologist.
…..but when the office mngr asked me to leave a tip for the practitioner after the procedure I was shocked.

I know this tipping MD stuff was related to the out of control tip culture here in post 2020.

You only really adjust the % upward in lower priced situations, because for a $20 meal, leaving $4 is cheesy. I leave $20, so that's 100%.

Agreed - at River Roost when I go to hear yeehaw Bob I usually only want 1 drink but the they bring me water after my drink. The drink was $8 or $9 but I’m not going to leave them $2 - I’m gonna leave at least $5.

But if 20% is $5 - that’s what I’ll leave at a restaurant for sure.

Get this, we were told by Ohana management that the 18% gratuity is not the tip, and that we should tip the waiter separately, since he/she does not get any of the gratuity.

What? All these years I thought the automatically added gratuity WAS a tip for the wait staff!!!

Who gets that money then?

If your state is Rhode Island, the min wage for tipped employees is actually $14 per hour. If they earn less than $10.11 in reported tips, then the employer must pay them the difference. If they earned nothing in tips, then the employer would have to pay them the full $14.

In my state also the tipped wage is much less than the State Minimum Wage. If tipped wage plus tips do not meet the State Minimum Wage, the employer must make up the difference.

In summary, a tipped wage position will pay at least the State Minimum Wage or higher. Bartenders and waitstaff can make $40/hr if not more. Not bad for a $2.98/hr tipped wage position.

I personally would never completely fail to tip, even for bad service. But I would talk to a manager and explain why I’m not returning.

tipping for bad service makes no sense at all.

For what it’s worth I’m in the UK right now and many restaurants have added a 12-15% “service charge” to the bill - which is annoying. Just raise the prices 12-15% if that’s what it’s going to cost.
