I've never purchased travel insurance and wouldn't consider it unless traveling internationally. I may be completely wrong but I've always viewed it as one of those things bordering on a scam. I'm curious though if someone were simply sick would the insurance cover it, and has anyone had any experience/success getting them to pay out for this? In my experience what insurance companies say and what they actually end up doing can be a little different.
In a way your right. If all goes well, you basically threw money away. It also depends on the amount of money involved and one's financial status. However, if you have invested thousands into a trip, with most of it non-refundable it's a gamble. You are gambling that you won't need it and so are they. However, if you are wrong you lose. If they are wrong, you win. Even my international trip was basically me throwing $250.00 in the trash, but, if I had needed to use it... I would have won in substantial amounts.

Yeah I think the thing for me in the context of this conversation is if you opt to cancel your trip because a family member is sick you still run the risk of losing out even if you do have this insurance. That's a big risk to take just because a family member came down with something. I think I would still go and have that family member just stay in the hotel during the worst of it.

Some my very well be like that, but, the one I had purchased was for "any reason" basically meaning family, traveling companion or myself.

Have you heard direct reports of them paying out for an illness. From what I gathered from reviews from multiple different companies I wouldn't feel it's a guaranteed thing even if they say it is.

Fortunately, I didn't have to find out... but, they did put it in writing. Seems like that would give a good reason to stick to their word.

Reading the reviews I read sounded like they had it in writing also. Insurance companies are notorious for finding ways out of pay outs.

I'll take your word for it. However, if I have a situation where I am about to lose money, without the insurance I am basically waving in the breeze. With insurance, I have an outside chance of getting some cash back either through payment from them or after the litigation.

Yeah I agree it is something and certainly if I were buying insurance like this I would probably research it a little. My point is though that if someone gets sick just having insurance doesn't necessarily motivate someone to just cancel the trip. There's still the possibility they will lose money or possibly have to go through the hassle of dealing with a claim. Personally I would only get that type of insurance to cover things like cancelled flights, closed resorts or things where something outside of my control effectively kept me from my vacation.

True, but that is a completely different discussion that has nothing to do with insurance. It's mind set. As you say, some would go even if they had insurance due to optimism that they will feel better within a reasonable period of time or just the desire to go with their plans.

Yes
Time of year definitely has a lot to do with it. When we go to Disney in December, there's always people hacking and coughing and most are from up north where they've already been confined in close quarters for a couple of months. I don't think there's a December trip we've made in the past 7 years that we have not come down with some strange airborne bug (and we get our flu shots early each year).

Nothing like being on Disney transportation with someones little typhoid tyke spewing virus particles for the duration of an inter-park transfer because they don't cover their mouths as they cough. Then again its not just Disneyworld as people in my office are around the country and globe regularly and bring back all sorts of maladies that they dont stay home until they are not contagious.

Kinda depends. If it's something contagious like the flu or some other airborne virus then most certainly not. Non-contagious but still detrimental to me? Probably would if it didn't agitate the condition too much. On the other hand, I likely wouldn't stop my week-long vacation if I had already arrived and caught something halfway through, though I would do my best to medicate with what I bring (I pack enough first aid tidbits to arm a small clinic) or can purchase on-site.

The railings on the MK monorail platform and many in the park have lead based paint. Be careful what you lick.
I'm pretty sure that if they ever did contain lead based paint the government would have forced them to correct that situation. Lead based problems were discovered before WDW was even built. I would be very surprised if any still existed on property. I would need to see some report to believe it, not just an off the cuff statement.
