What the original poster described is wrong. Yes people spend thousands, yes kids get sick but you can spend the $100 if you are already spending thousands on insurance ? or you can tell the parents "THINK ABOUT OTHERS". I know think about others, it is hard this time of year..... but tell the little darling ..... cover your mouth does not hurt or what about the masks? I came home from Walt Disney World more than once sick and the parents are to blame.
That might be the problem. Very few people buy the insurance. I know I never had for a trip to Disney. I did when I went to Europe ($255.00 I'll never see again), but, if I had needed it there is no telling how much it might have saved me. Especially the medical coverage part.

So the other day I'm sitting outside The Plaza, waiting at at table for my lunch and at the table next to me, there's this 11 or 12-year-old plague victim who's coughing non stop, with zero regard for anyone around her. Clearly feverish from the look, clad in her Princess Dress and obviously wasn't taught to cover her mouth. And I'm not talking the average traveling sniffles we all seem to get, I'm talking full on, Steven King's The Stand superflu symptoms.

The parents did nothing to alleviate the situation. Me, I hopped tables pretty quick because I didn't want to come down with that plague but still ended up with a touch of it.

So this left me thinking.... why on earth would you go to a theme park when you're that sick? Why would you make it worse for yourself let-alone spread this virus to others?

Thoughts?
Kind of like the child at a character meal that had chicken pox......
The mother didn't care and one of the princesses had never had it and was deeply concerned.....
Of course a manager was called and came and said "the character had to meet the child" and "we can never suggest to a guest they have a disease".

I'm sure the disease ridden child and parent got the meal comped and other recovery. Just bring your child that has a contagious disease to WDW and think of all the free things you can get. Think about that the next time you shake hands with a character.

No
I've had stomach viruses a few times while down there. We would pass it around, and whoever was sick stayed back at the room, usually with my mom (who missed three days that trip between sick kids and being sick herself). At this point, I've been to WDW so many times that if I'm sick, I would rather stay back at the room and get better than attempt the parks and feel worse. One time I couldn't. I was 13 and about ready to have my tonsils out, and I came down with a bout of tonsillitis (again) on our last day of vacation. My mom had the antibiotics on her (my doctor got to the point where he was like, "Here's your antibiotic" because I had tonsillitis so frequently and we knew I needed the tonsils out) and we spent the day in Epcot until it was time to go home. It's the only trip in memory that I remember really wanting to go home.

Now as far as the kid who the OP saw...I agree with another poster; it could have come on very quickly. Personally, I had the flu a few years ago. I went to school fine, went to the nurse for some painkillers, and she said she literally sat there and watched me get sicker and sicker and sicker within an hour. Several hours later I had a horrible fever and was too sick to move. I agree that yes, it was good to move away and yes, the child should have probably been taken back to the hotel room. But I would not presume to judge when you don't know the whole situation.

Alas, I'm pretty sure your parents taught you to cover your mouth when you coughed, right? Plus... 15 straight minutes? She was 500 feet from First Aid too.

The answer is simple. People are already there and will basically go at any cost because they've "paid their money" and can't miss any action.

If I'm were sick, I would stay back and try to recover so I can be 100% for the remaining days I have left.

And I don't think many parents teach kids how to cover their mouths when they cough. I constantly see kids walking around hacking out a lung without even moving a hand to their faces.

If i was ever sick and was sick while being there my plan would be just sleeping it off in the hotel room until i felt better, unfornately none of this happend when i went last week so everything went well, until i went to the magic kingdom on the final day before heading back home the next day, ive seen alot of spots of "vomits" all pixeled in dust in a few places.. sound like theres some serious bug going on around at the magic kingdom or people were just being dehyrated it was a bit tad hot that day.

Minor sniffles or something like that then no, I would venture into the parks but if it was anything that would take any sort of enjoyment away from my or my families vacation by my feeling poorly then I would use the vacation insurance that we always buy...that's what it is there for.

If you don't buy insurance then you cannot see past the end of your nose anyway and will probably plod forward into the parks with impunity regardless of how it will adversely effect others because you are afraid of losing all that money that you could have protected with the cost of some souvenir T-shirts or a sit down meal. (Queue the "I've never bought insurance and I've been fine without it" crowd)

Trip insurance does you no good once you are there unless there is a medical expense coverage. Insurance only covers your costs if you cannot, for some reason, go at all and you have paid in advance for a lot of it. It won't give your money back if you are sick while you are there and missed the fun. It will just reimburse for money spent in advance of the trip like airfare or prepaid hotels. Once you have boarded the plane or entered the hotel, it's all on you.

Agreed...I was assuming someone was ill at time of departure. But...the insurance we purchase from AAA does offer some coverage for trip interruption as in illness. Do homework on what insurance you purchase to be assured of the best coverage.

Like many others have said, it honestly depends.
For example, if I only have a cold or something, I would still go to the parks, but I might not go on any rides that might possibly make it worse (water rides, etc).
I might even go if whatever I have contracted seems a bit worse, but honestly it really depends.

I've never purchased travel insurance and wouldn't consider it unless traveling internationally. I may be completely wrong but I've always viewed it as one of those things bordering on a scam. I'm curious though if someone were simply sick would the insurance cover it, and has anyone had any experience/success getting them to pay out for this? In my experience what insurance companies say and what they actually end up doing can be a little different.

prior to our trip in October, I learned I had a mass on my bladder that required surgery. wasn't life threatening, & I would've cancelled the trip without hesitation.
turns out I couldn't get booked till late November, & we went. mass wasn't an issue for me during the trip at all. thankfully came back negative. :)

On ours everything is spelled out pretty specifically on a 15 page document. We used it once due to loss of luggage and were compensated 100% for all contents and the bag without needing to produce receipts....like I said do your homework as there are different levels you can purchase. We go through AAA for our insurance needs when travelling rather than some fly by night internet company.

I looked briefly online and it appears and I would assume that at minimum you need a doctors not specifically advising you not to travel. I've been pretty sick before and had doctors say traveling was okay.

If you told a doctor you would rather not travel they will write you a note if you are sick...you are correct that a note would be needed but what doctor in their right mind (and in light of lawsuit) would not write a note for a sick person? I buy insurance for peace of mind once I have done the proper research, that does not mean that you have to... it really is just my own personal two cents from experience.

Yeah looking through reviews of various companies online it appears most of them find ways to get out of paying out even with a doctors note. Searching for reviews I couldn't find a positive one involving illness. I can't say I completely blame them, it's pretty easy to get a doctors note if you just decide not to go.
