I'm pretty sure that if they ever did contain lead based paint the government would have forced them to correct that situation. Lead based problems were discovered before WDW was even built. I would be very surprised if any still existed on property. I would need to see some report to believe it, not just an off the cuff statement.
Nope, it's there. This is the reason they have a rough texture. They're not allowed to sand it before painting due to OSHA regulations. So when the paint bubbles or the railing rusts a little they just have to paint over it.

When they had to cut the railings several years ago to add the automatic gates they had a crew come in and remove small strips of paint just where they were going to cut. The precautions they were required to take were pretty extreme. They had to tape up a perimeter around the whole station I believe it was about 100' out and only the crew wearing full body hazmat suits could enter. It was pretty interesting to watch.

Well, removal or covering is the accepted methods of protecting the public. As long as it's not disturbed, it's not a hazard to anyone. No need to have a whole lot of concern. There must be 50 layers of paint over it by now.

Yeah I think painting over covers them from a legal standpoint but the paint is always chipping and the lower layers are very often exposed, this is why I suggest not licking it.

Kind of like the child at a character meal that had chicken pox......
The mother didn't care and one of the princesses had never had it and was deeply concerned.....
Of course a manager was called and came and said "the character had to meet the child" and "we can never suggest to a guest they have a disease".

I'm sure the disease ridden child and parent got the meal comped and other recovery. Just bring your child that has a contagious disease to WDW and think of all the free things you can get. Think about that the next time you shake hands with a character.

That actually happened?! That's untenable! Adults are more likely than children to have serious complications if they get chickenpox.

We all know how melodramatic the OP is. I'm sure they didn't have the plague. I'm also sure it didn't kill photodave. Hence the complaining. Kids are sick until they are basically teenagers, it's just how the world of micro organisms and immunobodies work.

What the original poster described is wrong. Yes people spend thousands, yes kids get sick but you can spend the $100 if you are already spending thousands on insurance ? or you can tell the parents "THINK ABOUT OTHERS". I know think about others, it is hard this time of year..... but tell the little darling ..... cover your mouth does not hurt or what about the masks? I came home from Walt Disney World more than once sick and the parents are to blame.

Now I get that small children are the smallpox blankets of the 21st century, but there's no need to infect everyone.

I've gone at the tail end of a cold (no longer contagious). And we joke about the Disney crud that rears it's head 2 days after we return. However, if my child was exhibiting the symptoms you described, she'd be back at our resort, in bed. You don't know when she became sick. But yeah, she should be in bed. With the Do Not Disturb sign hanging on the door for several days.

A tad exaggerated, don't you think? Must not have kids. We need those germs spread around to build our immune systems. We have problems with super bugs because (1) the overuse of antibiotics and (2) the germophobes parents became. Parents don't let their kids go out and get dirty any more. Which means they aren't as resistant to common germs as my generation is (not talking about serious illnesses). I've not had a cold or the flu in a couple of years. Why? Because I grew up before parents sterilized their children's world and I have a pretty healthy immune system. And I wash my hands.

P.S. Small pox has been eradicated.

You took that literally, didn't you?

As others have said, it really depends on my symptoms. I know how to "cover my cough" and try to be aware of my interractions with my surroundings when I have a cold. Something more than that and I'd probably stay home, or in the room if I'm already at the World. Not that I wouldn't be extremely disappointed. I think in the OP's case, it might have come down to money. I feel like parents push their kids on a Disney vacation anyway, seeing as the parents planned it, saved for it, took PTO, etc. A sick child becomes another inconvenient obstacle between the parents getting their money's worth out of the trip. True, we don't know the exact situation here - maybe the child started coming down with something that very day - but if the kid was really THAT bad, the parents should have skipped the meal and just gone out.

My wife developed a bad sinus infection or picked up a bug. We had a Dr. come to the room, he prescribed some meds and we spent the next day in the room. We'll see what if anything our travel insurance covers. I'm sure that the people seated around us on Star Tours one day wished that the person coughing up a small country behind us had done the same. It's just common sense and common courtesy. You take care of yourself and family, and don't do anything to spread whatever it may be to someone else.

I don't remember ever having gone while sick but more than once, a cold has followed me home. I thought it was the ghosts who were supposed to do that.

Between the recycled air on the flights and the germs of the entire planet being hacked and sneezed all over the place, it's semi-miraculous when I get home without a cold.
